Family holidays to Portugal are all about sun-soaked beaches where the kiddos can build sandcastles 'til they're blue (or red) in the face, waterparks that'll have everyone's adrenaline pumping, and buffets stacked with delish food for EVERY appetite. Even your cravings for pasta with a side of cake. We've rounded up these pocket-friendly deals, so you can focus less on the niggly bits, and more on the fun bits – like settling family debates over whether the kids really need another unicorn inflatable. We think the answer is yes 🦄
How to have a brilliant, and cheap, holiday in Portugal - 🤑🤑🤑
We are one of the best value travel agents around! And Portugal is a great value destination so naturally, we're an iconic couple. If you don't believe us, check out our cheapest holidays to Portugal leaving next month. 👀 Yes, our prices are great! But, that's not all (you lucky people) because we've also got some tips for you on keeping your wallet happy when you're there!
☕ Make breakfast your cheap meal - if you're not on an all-inclusive deal, pop into a local pastelaria (bakery café) for breakfast rather than paying hotel prices. You'll get a proper Portuguese experience with a coffee, toastie, and pastry for under €5. Save your euros for lunch and dinner!
🍴 Look for lunch specials - many Portuguese restaurants offer "prato do dia" (dish of the day) at lunchtime, which usually includes soup, a main, dessert, and even a glass of wine for around €8-12. It's the same quality as dinner but half the price, so consider making lunch your main meal if you're watching the budget.
🕰️🍸 Time your drinks right - lots of bars have happy hour between 5pm-8pm with discounts or two-for-one offers. Beer and wine are already well-priced in Portugal (around €2-3), but happy hour makes them even better value!
🖼️Take advantage of free activities - Portugal's beaches are all public and free to enjoy, historic town centres cost nothing to wander through, and many museums offer free entry on certain days (often the first Sunday of each month). Walking, beach days, and exploring pretty villages won't cost you a penny.
🚌Use local transport - public buses and trains in Portugal are reliable and inexpensive. In the Algarve, you can hop between towns for just a few euros, and cities like Lisbon and Porto have great metro systems. If you're staying in a resort with transfers included, even better!
🏖️Mix eating out with picnic days - you don't have to eat at restaurants for every meal. Grab some fresh bread, local cheese, fruit, and a bottle of Portuguese wine from the supermarket for a fraction of restaurant prices. Perfect for beach picnics or balcony sundowners with a view.
🎫Book activities in advance when you can - some attractions offer online discounts for advance bookings. Waterpark tickets, boat trips, and tours are often cheaper when booked ahead rather than on the day, so it's worth having a quick look before you go.
📅Consider shoulder season travel - if your schedule allows, visiting in May, June, September, or October means you'll often get lower prices than peak summer while still enjoying lovely weather. The sea's warm, the sun's shining, and you'll have more space on the beaches. But if July or August works better for you, go for it - that's when the atmosphere's at its best!
