Vale do Lobo is where the Algarve does luxury with its feet in the sand. This prestigious 450-hectare resort sits between pine forests and 2km of pristine beachfront, with two championship golf courses designed by Sir Henry Cotton, one of the Algarve's biggest tennis and padel centres, and a dining scene that draws people from across the Golden Triangle. It's been running for over 60 years and still sets the standard for upmarket Portugal holidays.

The beach is the star — long, golden, and backed by the dramatic red sandstone cliffs that have become one of the most photographed landscapes in the Algarve. The Royal Golf Course's famous 16th hole plays over these cliffs, and it's regularly named one of the most spectacular golf holes in Europe. Add in Quinta do Lago right next door, Vilamoura a short drive west, and Faro Airport just 20 minutes away, and you've got a luxury base that's genuinely hard to beat.

Good to Know

  • ☀️ Over 300 days of sunshine a year. Summers hit 28-30°C. Only about 20km from Faro Airport — roughly 20 minutes by car, making it one of the closest luxury resorts to the airport.

  • 💶 This is premium Algarve — expect resort-level pricing for dining and green fees. Meals at The Praca run €30-60+ for two, and green fees are at the upper end. But the quality matches the price. Loule municipality charges a tourist tax — check with your hotel for current rates.

  • ⛳ The 16th hole on the Royal Course is one of the most famous par 3s in Europe — a 200-metre carry over a gaping ravine in the red sandstone cliffs, with the Atlantic crashing below. Even if you don't play golf, it's worth walking out to see it.

For bigger or younger groups, Vilamoura and Albufeira have a wider range of group-friendly hotels and nightlife.

Golf at Vale do Lobo 2026/2027

Vale do Lobo has been a serious golf destination since 1968, when the legendary Sir Henry Cotton designed the original courses. Today the resort is home to two championship 18-hole courses that regularly feature in Europe's top rankings, with fairways running through umbrella pines down to the cliff edge and along the beach.

Royal Course — The headline act. Designed by Rocky Roquemore based on Sir Henry Cotton's original drawings, with rolling fairways, pine trees, lakes and wild flowers. The 16th hole is the star — a par 3 requiring a 200-metre carry over the red sandstone cliffs, with the Atlantic below. It's one of the most photographed golf holes in Europe and the defining image of Algarve golf. Regularly ranked among Portugal's best courses.

Ocean Course — Based on Cotton's original 1968 design, redeveloped by Roquemore in 2003. The front nine wind through hilly, pine-covered terrain with sea views from several holes. The back nine run down towards the Atlantic, with holes 11, 14 and 15 playing spectacularly alongside the beach and ocean. A different character to the Royal — more links-style on the coastal holes.

🏌️ Golf Academy — Practice facilities, a warming-up area, a short game practice area with bunkers, and a putting green. Professional coaching available for all levels.

🏆 Free Golf Shuttle — Available for guests staying in Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago hotels (minimum 2 golfers), Vilamoura (minimum 4) and Albufeira (minimum 6).

Best hotels for golfers:

  • Dona Filipa Hotel — Overlooks the golf course, 5-star facilities, and walking distance to both the Royal and Ocean clubhouses. The obvious choice for a golf trip.

  • Ria Park Hotel & Spa — Six of the Algarve's best courses within easy reach, spa for post-round recovery, and the "Stay in One, Play in All" programme.

Vale do Lobo Beaches 2026/2027

🏖️ Praia de Vale do Lobo — The resort's main beach, stretching for about 2km. Golden sand backed by dramatic red and orange sandstone cliffs that are genuinely spectacular — some of the most photogenic in the Algarve. Lifeguards in summer, sunbed and parasol hire, and beach bars. The cliffs are the same formations that the Royal Course's 16th hole plays over. Warm, calm water.

🌅 Praia do Garrao — At the western end of the Vale do Lobo stretch, near the Dona Filipa Hotel. A quieter section of the same long beach with a slightly more secluded feel. Some sections are backed by the Ria Formosa nature reserve rather than cliffs.

🌊 Praia de Quarteira — About 15 minutes' drive west. Quarteira's 2km town beach with a palm-lined promenade, restaurants and a more local, Portuguese atmosphere. Good for a change of scene.

☀️ Praia da Quinta do Lago — About 10 minutes east. Quinta do Lago's beach, reached via the iconic wooden bridge over the Ria Formosa. Pristine and uncrowded.

🌅 Praia da Falesia — About 20 minutes west. A 6km stretch of sand backed by dramatic red and orange cliffs. One of the most spectacular walks in the Algarve.

FAQs

How far is Vale do Lobo from Faro Airport?

Only about 20km — roughly 20 minutes by car. When you book your Algarve jollies with On the Beach, you can add airport transfers as part of your package that way you get a good price locked in, and there'll be someone at arrivals with a board. Alternatively, if you prefer to queue 😉, taxis are usually avaliable outside the arrivals gate.

What is the Golden Triangle?

The unofficial name for the trio of luxury Algarve resorts — Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura. Together they form the most exclusive stretch of the Algarve coast. Vale do Lobo has the most beach-facing character of the three, with its dramatic red cliffs and 2km of beachfront.

What is the 16th hole on the Royal Course?

One of the most famous par 3s in European golf. It requires a carry of over 200 metres over a dramatic ravine in the red sandstone cliffs, with the Atlantic below. It's been photographed so many times that it's essentially become the symbol of Algarve golf. Even non-golfers walk out to see it.

Is Vale do Lobo good for families?

Yes — the Dona Filipa Hotel has a kids' club (summer, Christmas, Easter), a children's pool and a beach club. The beach is safe with lifeguards, the tennis centre offers junior coaching, and there's a children's entertainment area near the Ria Park Hotel. It's a quieter, more relaxed family experience than the bigger resorts.

How does Vale do Lobo compare to Quinta do Lago?

They're neighbours in the Golden Triangle and share a similar luxury market. Vale do Lobo has a slightly more open, beach-facing feel — The Praca gives it a social centre, and the cliff-backed beach is right there. Quinta do Lago is more of a private estate — more secluded, slightly more exclusive, and the beach is accessed via a wooden bridge. Both have world-class golf, five-star hotels and fine dining. If you want a proper resort with a central square and direct beach access, Vale do Lobo edges it. If you want maximum privacy and a nature reserve on your doorstep, Quinta do Lago.

Is there nightlife in Vale do Lobo?

Not in the clubbing sense. Evenings are about long dinners, cocktails at The Praca, and a sophisticated atmosphere. There's live entertainment in summer at the resort bars. For a livelier scene, Vilamoura's marina is 15-20 minutes' drive with a casino, cocktail bars and waterfront restaurants.
