• Two kilometres of red-cliff beach - Golden sand backed by ochre and rust-coloured sandstone that turns properly luminous in the late afternoon. It is the most photographed stretch of coast in the Algarve and the resort sits directly on it.

• A tennis and padel centre worth travelling for - Nine hard courts, four artificial clay and six padel courts, with coaching from beginner to serious. One of the largest set-ups on this coast.

• The Praça - The resort's central square. A pool with bar service, restaurants around the edges and live music in summer. If you holiday here, everyone ends up here eventually.

• The valley of the wolf - This is what Vale do Lobo means, and you will see it written Vale de Lobo, Val do Lobo and Val de Lobo about as often as the proper spelling. Whichever way you type it, it is the same 450 hectares of pine, fairway and cliff on the central Algarve coast.

Good to Know

• ☀️ Over 300 days of sunshine a year. Summers hit 28-30°C. Only about 20km from Faro Airport — roughly 20 minutes by car, making it one of the closest luxury resorts to the airport.

• 💶 This is premium end of the Algarve — expect resort-level pricing for dining and green fees. Meals at The Praca run €30-60+ for two, and green fees are at the upper end. But the quality matches the price.

• ⛳ The 16th hole on the Royal Course is one of the most famous par 3s in Europe, a 200-metre carry over a gaping ravine in the red sandstone cliffs, with the Atlantic crashing below. Even if you don't play golf, it's worth walking out to see it.

Vale do Lobo's hotel selection is small but high-end, you won't find budget options here, but what you will find is quality and elegance with the golf courses, beach and resort facilities on the doorstep.

• Dona Filipa Hotel is the flagship, a five-star looking straight out over the Vale do Lobo golf course and 200 metres from the sand. Two heated outdoor pools, one of them for children, a summer beach club with loungers, towels and parasols laid on, and the Kangaroo Kids Club running through the school holidays. Guests get preferential rates at the Vale do Lobo Royal spa, and it is walking distance to both clubhouses, which makes it the obvious base for a golf trip with a family attached.

• Ria Park Hotel & Spa sits between Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago, five-star, with the most serious spa in the area: indoor pool, steam rooms, sauna and twelve treatment rooms, which is exactly what you want after 36 holes. Outdoor pools, a gym, tennis courts, and a children's activity area 300 metres away running programmes for ages four to twelve. It is on the "Stay in One, Play in All" scheme, so the partner hotels' facilities are open to you too, and six of the Algarve's best courses are within easy reach. About 700 metres from the beach.

• Ria Park Garden is the quiet one, a four-star tucked into a secluded spot between the two resorts, built around a large outdoor pool and a lot of tropical planting. A restaurant, two bars including one at the poolside, and an atmosphere aimed squarely at people who came here to do very little. About 800 metres from the beach.

Golf at Vale do Lobo 2026/2027

Vale do Lobo has been a serious golf destination since 1968, when Sir Henry Cotton laid out the original courses. Today there are two championship 18-hole courses that regularly appear amongst the top of Europe's rankings, with fairways running through umbrella pines down to the cliff edge and along the beach.

• Royal Course - The headline act, redeveloped by Rocky Roquemore from Cotton's original drawings, with rolling fairways, pines, lakes and wild flowers. The 16th is the reason people come: a par 3 needing a carry of over 200 metres across a ravine in the red sandstone cliffs, Atlantic below. It is the single most photographed golf hole in Portugal and effectively the symbol of Algarve golf.

• Ocean Course - Built on Cotton's 1968 design and redeveloped by Roquemore in 2003. The front nine climb through hilly, pine-covered ground with sea views from several tees; the back nine drop towards the Atlantic, with 11, 14 and 15 running spectacularly alongside the beach. More links in character than the Royal, and a genuinely different day out.

• Golf Academy - Practice ground, warm-up area, a short-game area with bunkers and a putting green, with coaching from first-timers upward. Worth an hour before you tee off on the Royal, if only for the 16th.

• Free golf shuttle - Runs for guests staying in Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago from two golfers, Vilamoura from four and Albufeira from six.

Vale do Lobo Beaches 2026/2027

• Praia de Vale do Lobo - The resort's own beach, running about 2km. Golden sand backed by the red and orange sandstone cliffs that made the place famous, and they are genuinely spectacular in the last hour of daylight. Lifeguards through the summer, sunbeds and parasols for hire, beach bars along the front. The water is Atlantic rather than Mediterranean, so it is fresher than the Med and all the better for it when it is 28°C on the sand.

• Praia do Garrão - The western end of the same long beach, near the Dona Filipa. Quieter, a little more tucked away, and some stretches back onto the Ria Formosa reserve rather than the cliffs.

• Praia de Quarteira - About 15 minutes west. Quarteira is a working Portuguese town, and its 2km beach comes with a palm-lined promenade, a daily fish market and restaurants that price like locals eat there, because they do.

• Praia da Quinta do Lago - About 10 minutes east, reached across the long wooden bridge over the Ria Formosa, which is half the appeal. Pristine, wide, and rarely crowded.

• Praia da Falésia - About 20 minutes west, and worth the drive. Six kilometres of sand under towering red and ochre cliffs, and one of the best coastal walks in Portugal.
