Praia Da Rocha Holidays

Praia da Rocha is one of the Algarve's big hitters. A massive stretch of golden sand backed by dramatic ochre cliffs, a buzzing strip of bars and restaurants along Avenida Tomas Cabreira, and Portimao — a proper Portuguese city with a marina, riverside dining and a sardine festival — just 3km up the road. It's the kind of resort that works for just about everyone: families spread out on the beach by day, couples watching the sunset from the fort, groups warming up for a night out along the strip.

The beach itself stretches for over a kilometre and is one of the most recognisable in Portugal — the towering sandstone cliffs behind it look like something from a film set. There's watersports on the sand, boat trips from the marina, a casino, a 16th-century fortress, and enough restaurants to eat somewhere different every night of the week.

Good to Know

• ☀️ Summers hit 29-33°C with 12 hours of sunshine in July and August. Sea temperatures peak at 20-21°C from July to September. Spring and autumn are warm and much quieter.

• 💶 Meals from about €10-15 per head, pints from €2-3. Portimao municipality charges a tourist tax of €2 per person per night in high season (April-October) and €1 in low season. Capped at seven nights, under-13s exempt.

• 🐟 Portimao's annual Sardine Festival (Festival da Sardinha) is one of the Algarve's biggest events — usually held in August on the waterfront. Thousands of sardines grilled over charcoal, live music, dancing. Absolutely worth timing your jollies around if you can.

• NH Marina Portimao Resort — Right by Portimao's yacht harbour with saltwater pools, a steakhouse, cocktail bars and harbour views. Stylish, well-located and 300m from the beach.

• Jardins da Rocha — Just 80m from the beach with a pool, kids' pool and poolside snack bar. Apartments with kitchenettes give families the self-catering option. Good value for the location.

• Clube Praia da Rocha — A long-standing favourite with British and Irish families. 200m from the beach, self-service restaurant, two bars, and studios/apartments with kitchenettes. Cheap and cheerful.

• Plaza Real — A self-catering apartment complex with a pool, kids' pool, playground and tennis court. About a 15-minute walk to the beach, or a five-minute drive to the strip and marina. Good for families who want space and independence.

🎉 Groups

• Castelos Da Rocha — A good-value complex set back from the busiest stretch, 500m from the beach. Ideal for groups who want a cheap base with the strip and beach both walkable.

• Mirachoro Praia Da Rocha — On the fringe of the resort with a pool, a bar with a dance floor, and a courtesy bus to the resort centre and Portimao. About 1.5km from the beach. Great for groups who don't mind a short walk or bus ride.

• Bela Vista - Adults Only — A stunning five-star boutique hotel in a converted 19th-century mansion on a rocky outcrop above the beach, with private beach access, an L'Occitane spa, beautifully sculpted gardens and eccentric, colourful interiors. Family-owned since the 1800s and one of the first hotels to open on the Algarve in 1934. One of the most romantic and luxurious stays in the region. Adults only (no under-12s).

💰 Value

• Algarve Mor — Right on the beachfront road at the west end of Praia da Rocha, just 50m from the sand. Self-catering apartments with sea views, a pool and a sun terrace. Brilliant location for the price.

• Flor Da Rocha Apartments — 600m from the beach with a pool bar open in summer. Walking distance to bars and restaurants. Simple, well-priced apartments from £19pp deposits.

Praia da Rocha Beaches 2026/2027

• 🏖️ Praia da Rocha — The main event. Over 1.2km of golden sand backed by dramatic ochre sandstone cliffs. Lifeguards, sunbed hire, watersports, beach bars and a wooden boardwalk running along the sand. Gets busy in summer but the sheer size means there's usually space. The western end near the Tres Castelos viewpoint tends to be quieter.

• 🌊 Praia dos Tres Castelos — Just west of the main beach, separated by cliffs. Smaller and quieter, with restaurants and cafes on the front. Named after the three castle-like rock formations rising from the sand. A good escape when the main beach is heaving.

• ☀️ Praia do Vau — About a 15-minute walk west from Praia da Rocha. A beautiful sandy beach with calmer water and a more relaxed atmosphere. Popular with families and a good bet for a quieter day.

• 🐚 Praia dos Caneiros — On the eastern side of the Arade River, near Ferragudo. A tranquil beach in a beautiful setting, best reached by car or taxi. One of the prettiest in the area.

• ⛵ Praia Grande — A vast stretch of sand on the eastern side of the Arade estuary. Quieter and less developed than the main Praia da Rocha strip. Good for long walks.

• 🚤 Cross the river to Ferragudo by water taxi — a charming fishing village with cobbled streets, local fish restaurants and a castle overlooking the harbour. About €6-9 for the crossing from the marina

• ⛳ Play a round at Alto Golf or Penina Golf — two championship courses within a short drive of the resort

• 🎉 Hit the strip — Avenida Tomas Cabreira has bars, clubs and a casino. NoSoloAgua is a beachfront club with DJs and a party atmosphere. Boogie Bar and Moonlight Bar are lively spots for a big night out

More Algarve Destinations

• Portimao — The city right next door, 3km inland. Riverside sardine restaurants, a marina, local markets and a proper Portuguese urban vibe. Praia da Rocha is technically part of the Portimao municipality.

• Alvor — A pretty fishing village about 7km west with a lovely promenade, waterfront restaurants and the Alvor lagoon nature reserve. A more relaxed alternative to the strip.

• Lagos — A buzzing city about 30 minutes west with a brilliant old town, dramatic cliff beaches, a marina and a lively bar scene.
