🏘️ Where to Stay on your Sorrento & Amalfi Coast Holidays

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families

  • Sorrento The best base for families by a mile. Flat, walkable town centre, the widest choice of hotels in the region, direct trains to Pompeii and Naples, and ferries to Capri and the islands leaving straight from the marina. No steep steps to battle with a buggy.

  • Amalfi Much flatter than Positano, with ferry access to the whole coastline, a gorgeous cathedral square for gelato stops, and brilliant seafood restaurants. The streets are manageable with kids and there are handy supermarkets for essentials.

  • Salerno A real working Italian city with sandy beaches right in town, one of the longest seafront promenades in Italy, and ferry connections to Amalfi, Positano and Capri. Lower prices than the coastal towns and a genuinely local atmosphere that kids love.

💑 Couples

  • Positano The postcard one. Pastel-coloured buildings tumbling down the hillside to the beach, buzzing beach clubs, boutique shopping and a properly glamorous atmosphere. Steep steps everywhere, but that's part of the charm when it's just the two of you.

  • Praiano Tucked between Positano and Amalfi, with west-facing views that catch the sunset, hidden coves and a much slower pace. Quieter and more affordable than its famous neighbours, and arguably the most romantic spot on the coast.

  • Ischia Island Italy's thermal spa island, a short ferry from Naples or Sorrento. Natural hot springs, volcanic beaches, lush gardens and a much more laid-back atmosphere than the Amalfi towns. Brilliant for couples looking for something a bit different.

🎉 Groups

  • Sorrento Also the top pick for groups. Central hotels within walking distance of bars, restaurants and the nightlife around Piazza Tasso, plus it's the easiest base for organising day trips along the coast or out to the islands.

  • Capri One of the most glamorous islands in the Mediterranean, just 20-25 minutes by ferry from Sorrento. There aren't big package holiday hotels on Capri itself, so most groups base themselves in Sorrento and do it as a day trip. Well worth the boat fare.

🏖️ Best beaches to visit on your Sorrento & Amalfi Coast holidays

Don't expect vast stretches of flat sand here; the coastline is all about dramatic limestone cliffs, emerald-green water, and hidden coves accessible only by boat or steep stone steps.

  • Marina Grande (Positano) - the most iconic beach in Italy. It’s a mix of pebbles and sand, lined with orange-and-blue umbrellas and backed by the world-famous "vertical" town. It’s the place to see and be seen.

  • Maiori Beach - the rarest of things on the Amalfi Coast - a long, sandy beach. Because it’s flat and easy to access, it’s the top choice for families with young children.

  • Arienzo Beach (Positano) - known as the "300 steps beach" because of the trek down (and back up!), it stays sunny longer than any other cove in Positano. Many visitors take the free shuttle boat from the main pier to save their legs.

  • Bagni Regina Giovanna (Sorrento) - not a beach in the traditional sense, but a natural emerald pool enclosed by limestone cliffs and Roman ruins. It’s a spectacular spot for a wild swim, just a short walk from Sorrento.

  • Fiordo di Furore - one of the most photographed spots in Italy. This tiny pebble beach sits at the base of a deep gorge, spanned by a soaring arched bridge. It’s rugged, dramatic, and best visited at midday when the sun hits the water.

  • Gavitella Beach (Praiano) - if you want a sunset swim, head here. Most beaches on the coast lose the sun early behind the cliffs, but Gavitella enjoys sunshine until the very last moment of the day.

FAQs

What's the best time to visit the Sorrento & Amalfi Coast?

Peak summer (July and August) gives you the hottest weather at 28-30°C and the buzziest atmosphere, but the coast gets seriously busy and prices are at their highest. May, June and September are the sweet spot for most people: temps around 22-25°C, quieter beaches, lower prices and weather that's brilliant for both lounging and exploring. The Sorrento and Amalfi Coast season really runs from Easter through to October, so you've got a wide window to play with.

Do I need a car on the Sorrento & Amalfi Coast?

Honestly, no. In fact, driving the coast road in summer can be more stressful than it's worth, as it's narrow, winding and packed with coaches. Sorrento is flat and walkable, SITA buses connect all the coastal towns, the Circumvesuviana train runs to Naples and Pompeii, and ferries link Sorrento with Capri, Ischia, Positano and Amalfi. Public transport is reliable and means you get to enjoy the scenery instead of white-knuckling the hairpin bends.

Is the Sorrento & Amalfi Coast good for families?

Absolutely. Sorrento is the most family-friendly base as it's flat, walkable and has loads of activities like pizza-making classes and easy day trips to Pompeii. For beach days, Maiori has the longest sandy beach on the coast and is much easier for little ones than the rocky coves elsewhere. Italians are famously welcoming to kids, with family-friendly restaurants and late-night dining that means you won't feel rushed. The only thing to watch is the steep steps in towns like Positano, which can be tricky with buggies.

What should I eat on the Sorrento & Amalfi Coast?

Everything. But if you want the essentials: Gnocchi alla Sorrentina (pillowy gnocchi in tomato sauce with melted mozzarella), Spaghetti alla Nerano (the famous zucchini pasta from the bay of Nerano), Delizia al Limone (sponge cake soaked in limoncello and lemon cream) and anything involving the local Sfusato Amalfitano lemons. Wash it all down with a limoncello, obviously. For seafood, head to Cetara, a proper fishing village famous for its colatura di alici (anchovy sauce) that gives pasta an incredible depth of flavour.
