• 🐠 The Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn on the seafront is one of Europe's oldest aquariums, housed in a gorgeous 19th-century building. It's small but fascinating, and kids love the marine life displays and the turtle rehabilitation centre.

• 🏰 Castel dell'Ovo sits on a tiny island connected to the seafront by a causeway. Entry is free, the views from the ramparts are brilliant, and the legend says Virgil hid a magical egg in the foundations that keeps the castle standing. Kids eat that stuff up.

• 🚂 Take the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii. Even young kids are mesmerised by the preserved streets, the stepping stones across the roads, and the plaster casts. Allow 3-4 hours and bring water and snacks, because shade is limited inside the site.

• 🍦 Walk the lungomare seafront promenade from Mergellina to Castel dell'Ovo. It's flat, pushchair-friendly, and lined with gelato stands and seafood kiosks. The views across the bay to Vesuvius are stunning.

• 🍕 Do a pizza crawl through the centro storico. Naples has hundreds of pizzerias and the Margheritas start from as little as €3. You can easily hit four or five spots in an evening and argue about which was best over a Peroni.

• 🏍️ Take a day trip to the Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei) west of Naples - a volcanic area with steaming craters, ancient Roman ruins, and the Cave of the Sibyl. It's dramatic, slightly eerie, and much less touristy than Pompeii.

• 🍹 The nightlife along the lungomare and in the Chiaia district is brilliant. Aperitivo culture is huge here, with bars offering free snacks with your evening drink from around 6pm. Via Caracciolo is particularly buzzy on warm evenings.
