Ischia is the volcanic island in the Bay of Naples that most people haven't heard of, and that's exactly what makes it brilliant. While everyone queues for the ferry to Capri, the smart money heads to Ischia instead. It's bigger, greener, cheaper and packed with natural thermal springs that have been drawing visitors since the ancient Greeks. There are gorgeous beaches, a medieval castle on a rocky islet, hilltop villages, proper Neapolitan food and a pace of life that makes you forget you were ever stressed. A 50-minute hydrofoil from Naples gets you here, and once you arrive you won't want to leave.

🧳 Good to Know - Holidays to Ischia 2026 / 2027

  • ☀️ Summers are hot and sunny at 26-30°C, with the sea warm enough for swimming from June well into October. The thermal parks open mid-April so even spring visits get the full spa experience.

  • 💶 Ischia is properly affordable for an Italian island. A pizza costs about €5-7, a seafood lunch around €12-15, and a beer about €4. Noticeably cheaper than Capri for food, drink and hotels.

  • 🏝️ The island feels more like a little country than a resort. Six towns, each with its own character, connected by winding roads through vineyards and pine forests. It's the kind of place where fishermen still mend nets in the harbour and nonna hangs the washing over the balcony.

✨ Ischia Island Highlights

  • ♨️ Soak in volcanic thermal pools at the Giardini Poseidon, with over 20 naturally heated pools at temperatures from 16°C to 40°C, plus a private beach, sauna carved from a tufa cave and sea views

  • 🏰 Castello Aragonese is a medieval fortress perched on a rocky islet connected to Ischia Ponte by a stone causeway - the views from the ramparts across the bay are stunning

  • 🏖️ Maronti beach is the island's longest stretch of sand, with dozens of beach clubs, restaurants and the bizarre Fumarole section where volcanic vents heat the sand hot enough to cook food in

  • 🥾 Hike to the summit of Mount Epomeo (788m) for panoramic views across the entire Bay of Naples, Capri, Procida and the mainland coast. Best in spring or autumn when it's not too hot.

  • 🐇 Ischia's signature dish is coniglio all'ischitana - slow-cooked rabbit stewed with tomatoes, garlic and local herbs. Every trattoria on the island does its own version and it's properly delicious.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families

  • 🏖️ San Montano beach on the north coast is the best family beach on the island - a sheltered crescent of calm, shallow turquoise water between two headlands. The left side is free public beach, the right side has Negombo's thermal park facilities.

  • ♨️ Sorgeto beach near Sant'Angelo has free natural hot springs that bubble up through the rocks into the sea. Kids find it endlessly fascinating and you can spend hours hopping between hot and cold pools. Access is via 234 steps down (or a water taxi from Sant'Angelo).

  • 🚌 The island's public bus network connects all the main towns and beaches and is cheap and easy to use. Kids love sitting up top on the open-air buses that wind through the hills.

  • 🍕 Pizza on Ischia is proper Neapolitan-style and cheaper than on the mainland tourist strips. Most villages have at least one good pizzeria where a margherita costs about €5-7.

💑 Couples

  • ♨️ Spend a full day at the Giardini Poseidon thermal park on Citara Bay - 20+ pools at different temperatures, a private beach, spa treatments and three restaurants. Watch the sunset over the sea from one of the highest pools. About €40 per person for the day.

  • 🚤 Take a boat trip around the island for swimming stops in hidden coves, views of the coastline from the sea and lunch at a waterside restaurant. Tours depart from Forio and take in Sant'Angelo and the Green Grotto.

  • 🍷 Book dinner at an agriturismo in the hills and eat homemade rabbit stew, fresh pasta and local Ischia DOC wine surrounded by vineyards. This is the authentic island experience at its best.

  • 🌅 Wander the pretty fishing village of Sant'Angelo at golden hour. It's car-free, tiny and achingly picturesque, with colourful houses, a small beach and waterfront restaurants.

🎉 Groups

  • 🏖️ Hire a boat for the day and island-hop between beaches. You can anchor off Maronti, swim at hidden coves, and stop for lunch at a beach restaurant without having to walk anywhere.

  • 🍻 Ischia Porto's main strip (Corso Vittoria Colonna and Via Roma) has bars, gelaterias and restaurants that buzz through the evening. Start with aperitivo, move to dinner, end with limoncello.

  • 🥾 Hike Mount Epomeo together as a group challenge. The trail from Fontana takes about 45 minutes to the summit and the views are a proper reward. Celebrate with lunch in one of the hilltop villages afterwards.

🏛️ Culture

  • 🏰 Castello Aragonese dates back to 474 BC (originally Greek) and was rebuilt by the Aragonese in the 15th century. The complex includes churches, a convent, stunning terraces and an exhibition space. Entry is about €12.

  • 🌿 The Giardini la Mortella botanical gardens were created by Susana Walton, wife of the British composer William Walton. Exotic plants from around the world are set across hillside terraces with sea views. Concerts are held in the garden theatre through spring and summer.

  • 🏺 The Museo Archeologico di Pithecusae in Lacco Ameno tells the story of Ischia as the oldest Greek colony in Italy, founded in the 8th century BC. The famous Nestor's Cup, one of the earliest known examples of Greek writing, was found here.

FAQs

What are the thermal spas like?

They're brilliant and a major reason people come to Ischia. The two big thermal parks are Giardini Poseidon (20+ pools, private beach, sauna, spa treatments, about €40 for the day) and Negombo (tropical gardens, multiple pools, Japanese labyrinth pool, similar price). For something free and wild, Sorgeto beach has natural hot springs in the sea that you can bathe in year-round. Many hotels also have their own thermal pools.

How do I get to Ischia from the UK & Ireland?

Fly into Naples Capodichino Airport, then take a ferry or hydrofoil from Naples port to Ischia. The fast hydrofoil from Molo Beverello takes about 50 minutes, the slower car ferry from Porta di Massa about 90 minutes. Tickets cost roughly €15-25 each way. Important: make sure your flights arrive and depart between 08:30 and 17:00 to allow enough time for the ferry connection.

What are the best beaches on Ischia?

Maronti is the longest and most popular, with beach clubs and restaurants. San Montano is calm and family-friendly with gorgeous turquoise water. Citara is great for sunsets. Spiaggia dei Pescatori in Ischia Porto is lively and convenient. For something unique, the Fumarole section of Maronti beach has volcanic vents that heat the sand.

How do I get around Ischia?

The public bus network covers the whole island and is cheap and frequent. Buses circle the island in both directions, connecting all the main towns and beaches. You can also hire scooters or cars (though the roads are narrow and winding), take taxis, or use water taxis between coastal villages. The island is small enough that nowhere is more than about 30 minutes from anywhere else.

Is Ischia better than Capri?

Different vibes. Ischia is bigger, greener, more affordable and more about thermal spas, beaches and local food. Capri is smaller, more glamorous, more expensive and more about designer shopping and the Blue Grotto. If you want a relaxing island holiday with thermal wellness, Ischia wins. If you want luxury and celebrity spotting, Capri. Most people who've been to both say Ischia is the more rewarding stay.

What's the food like on Ischia?

Excellent. Ischia's signature dish is coniglio all'ischitana (rabbit stew) and every trattoria does its own version. Fresh seafood is everywhere, the pizza is proper Neapolitan-style, and the island produces its own DOC wines from vineyards on the volcanic slopes. For something sweet, try a rum baba or local lemon granita. Eating out is noticeably cheaper than on Capri or the Amalfi Coast.
