The Neapolitan Riviera is the sweep of coastline around the Bay of Naples, and it's one of the most exciting stretches of Italy going. You've got Naples itself, the chaotic, pizza-obsessed city where street food is an art form. There's Pompeii and Herculaneum on the slopes of Vesuvius. The volcanic island of Ischia with its natural thermal spas. And the ancient Roman ruins of the Phlegraean Fields out towards Pozzuoli. It's grittier and more authentic than the Amalfi Coast across the peninsula, and significantly cheaper too. If you want the real southern Italy, this is it.
🧳 Good to Know - Holidays to Neapolitan Riviera 2026 / 2027
💶 Naples is one of the cheapest major cities in Italy. A margherita pizza costs about €3-7, a beer around €4, and an espresso just €1. You can eat a full meal for two with wine for €35-50 without even trying hard. Way cheaper than Rome, Florence or the Amalfi Coast.
🌋 The bay is dominated by Mount Vesuvius, which is still an active volcano. You can hike to the crater rim for stunning views across the whole bay. It last erupted in 1944 and is closely monitored, so don't worry.
🏙️ Naples is loud, messy, chaotic and absolutely brilliant. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site crammed into narrow lanes buzzing with scooters, washing lines and some of the best food in Italy. It takes a day to fall in love with it.

📍 Around the Bay
The Neapolitan Riviera covers a big stretch of coast and each area has its own character. Here's a quick rundown to help you figure out where to base yourself.
Naples - The main event. A huge, buzzing, chaotic city with world-class museums, the best street food in Italy and a UNESCO-listed historic centre crammed into narrow lanes. Base yourself here if you want culture, food and nightlife on your doorstep, with Pompeii and the coast easily reached by train. Not a beach destination, but there are small beaches at Posillipo and the suburb of Bagnoli has a more relaxed seaside feel.
Pompeii & Herculaneum - The eastern side of the bay, sitting on the slopes of Vesuvius. Pompeii town itself is fairly ordinary, but it puts you right next to the ruins and on the Circumvesuviana train line to Naples and Sorrento. A good pick if archaeology is your main draw and you want an affordable, quieter base.
Castellammare di Stabia - A working seaside town at the south-eastern end of the bay, where the coast starts curving towards the Sorrentine Peninsula. Less touristy than Sorrento but with a proper seafront, thermal springs and easy train access to Pompeii and Naples. Nearby Stabiae has its own Roman villa ruins.
Ischia - A volcanic island about 90 minutes by ferry from Naples. Famous for its natural thermal spas, lush green hillsides and beaches ranging from sandy bays to rocky coves with hot springs. Much more relaxed than the mainland, with a proper island pace. Great for couples and anyone who wants to combine beach time with thermal wellness.
The Phlegraean Coast (Pozzuoli & Baia) - West of Naples, this volcanic area is dotted with ancient Roman ruins and has a wild, slightly otherworldly feel. Pozzuoli has a brilliant amphitheatre and a lively fish market. Baia has submerged Roman ruins you can snorkel over. Quieter and less touristy than anywhere else on the bay, with a few small beaches.
🗺️ Neapolitan Riviera Holidays 2026/2027 - Travel Guide
👨👩👧👦 Families
🏛️ Pompeii is one of those rare historical sites that genuinely grips kids. Walking through actual Roman streets, seeing plaster casts of people and peeking into ancient bakeries and bathhouses brings history to life. Entry is about €18 for adults, under-18s free.
🌋 Hike up Mount Vesuvius together for a proper adventure. The walk from the car park to the crater rim takes about 30 minutes and the views across the bay are incredible. Guided tours run from Pompeii and Naples.
🏝️ Take the ferry to Ischia for a beach day. Maronti beach on the south side is long, sandy and has natural hot springs bubbling up through the sand, which kids find endlessly fascinating.
🍕 Do a pizza-making class in Naples. Several places in the historic centre let families have a go at stretching and topping their own Neapolitan pizzas in a proper wood-fired oven.
💑 Couples
♨️ Spend a day (or a whole stay) at the thermal spas on Ischia. The Giardini Poseidon Terme has dozens of thermal pools at different temperatures set into gardens overlooking the sea. Properly blissful.
🍝 Eat your way through the Spaccanapoli, Naples' famous straight street that splits the old town in two. Fried pizza, sfogliatella pastries, baba rum cakes and espresso so strong it could wake the dead.
🚢 Take a sunset ferry across the bay from Naples to Procida or Ischia. The views of Vesuvius and the city skyline from the water are stunning, especially in the golden hour.
🏛️ Visit the Naples Archaeological Museum, which houses most of the finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum including jaw-dropping mosaics, frescoes and the famous "Secret Cabinet" of Roman erotica.
🎉 Groups
🍕 Do a street food crawl through the Quartieri Spagnoli in Naples. Fried pizza, cuoppo (paper cones of fried seafood), arancini and cold beer from hole-in-the-wall bars. Cheap, cheerful and brilliant fun.
🚂 Take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Pompeii and Herculaneum for a day of ruins-hopping. The train is cheap (about €4 each way) and the two sites complement each other perfectly.
🍻 Naples' nightlife centres around the Chiaia district, Piazza Bellini and the streets around Via dei Tribunali. Craft beer bars, wine spots and late-night pizzerias keep things going into the small hours.
🏛️ Culture
🏛️ Naples' historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most layered cities in Europe. Greek, Roman, medieval and baroque architecture stack on top of each other in the narrow lanes. Underground Naples (Napoli Sotterranea) lets you explore ancient tunnels and aqueducts beneath the streets.
🎭 The Teatro San Carlo is the oldest continuously active opera house in the world, dating from 1737. Even if opera isn't your thing, the interior is breathtaking and guided tours are available.
🏛️ The Phlegraean Fields are a volcanic landscape with ancient Roman ruins that most tourists miss entirely. The amphitheatre at Pozzuoli (third largest in Italy), the submerged ruins at Baia and the bubbling Solfatara crater are all brilliant and crowd-free.
🏘️ Nearby Resorts
Sorrento - The glamorous clifftop town on the other side of the peninsula, about an hour from Naples by the Circumvesuviana train. Loads of hotels and a brilliant base for the Amalfi Coast.
Amalfi - The historic heart of the Amalfi Coast, reachable by ferry from Naples or by the famous coastal road from Salerno or Sorrento.
Salerno - The working Italian city at the eastern end of the Amalfi Coast, about 50 minutes from Naples by train. Affordable base with ferries along the coast.

FAQs
How do I get to the Neapolitan Riviera from the UK & Ireland?
How do I get to the Neapolitan Riviera from the UK & Ireland?
Fly into Naples Capodichino Airport (NAP), which has direct flights from several UK & Ireland airports year-round. The airport is just 7km from the city centre, about 20 minutes by bus or taxi. You can add a transfer when you book through On the Beach - that way not only do you get a good price you also don't need to queue up outside the airport because someone will be waiting for you at arrivals. For Ischia, you'll need to take a ferry from Naples port (about 90 minutes).
Is Naples safe?
Is Naples safe?
Yes, with normal city common sense. Naples has a reputation that's worse than the reality. The tourist areas (historic centre, waterfront, Chiaia) are busy and well-policed. Keep an eye on your valuables in crowded spots, don't flash expensive items, and stick to well-lit streets at night. Millions of tourists visit every year without any issues.
How do I get to Pompeii from Naples?
How do I get to Pompeii from Naples?
The Circumvesuviana train runs from Naples Garibaldi station directly to Pompeii Scavi (the ruins entrance) in about 35 minutes. Trains run frequently and cost about €4 each way. The same line also stops at Herculaneum (Ercolano) and continues to Sorrento.
How do I get to Ischia from Naples?
How do I get to Ischia from Naples?
Ferries and hydrofoils run from Naples port (Molo Beverello and Porta di Massa) to Ischia Porto. The fast hydrofoil takes about 50 minutes, the slower ferry about 90 minutes. Several companies operate the route and tickets cost roughly €15-25 each way depending on speed and season. Make sure your flights arrive and depart between 08:30 and 17:00 to allow time for the ferry connection.
What's the best pizza in Naples?
What's the best pizza in Naples?
That's a dangerous question in Naples. The classic pilgrimage spots are L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele and Sorbillo, both on Via dei Tribunali, but you'll queue for ages. Honestly, almost any place with a "Vera Pizza Napoletana" sign will serve something extraordinary. A margherita costs about €3-7 and it'll ruin pizza everywhere else for you forever.
Can I visit both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day?
Can I visit both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day?
You can, but it's a long day. They're about 20 minutes apart on the Circumvesuviana train. Pompeii is the bigger site (allow 3-4 hours minimum), while Herculaneum is smaller but in some ways better preserved (1.5-2 hours). If you're short on time, Herculaneum is actually the more rewarding visit for most people because you can see more in less time and the preservation is incredible.
