Generally, September and early October are your golden tickets for cheap holidays - the kids are back at school, demand drops off a cliff, but the weather's still gorgeous in most destinations. January (after the 6th) and early February are also brilliant for bagging a bargain, especially to the Canary Islands where temperatures stay mild. Avoid school holidays like the plague if you can - we're talking half terms, Easter, summer holidays and Christmas. Even shifting your dates by a few days either side of school holidays can save you a fortune. Mid-week flights (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) tend to be cheaper than weekend departures too.

It depends on how you holiday. Self-catering looks cheapest upfront, but once you factor in eating out three times a day (plus drinks), it can add up fast. Half board (breakfast and dinner included) is often the sweet spot for couples who want to explore during the day.
