Long-haul from Manchester

This is where Manchester stands apart from every other regional airport in the UK & Ireland. You don't need to go to London for long-haul. Emirates fly daily to Dubai (connecting to their worldwide network), Etihad fly to Abu Dhabi, Qatar Airways fly to Doha, and Turkish Airlines fly to Istanbul, all with one-stop connections to almost anywhere. If you live anywhere in the North West, Yorkshire, the Midlands, or North Wales, Manchester is your gateway to the world without the trek to Heathrow.

Getting to Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport is about 9 miles south of the city centre, just off junction 5 of the M56. The airport has its own railway station directly connected to the terminal buildings, with services from Manchester Piccadilly (around 20 minutes), Liverpool Lime Street, Leeds, Sheffield, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and London Euston. It's one of the best-connected airports in the country by rail. If you're driving, pre-bookable parking ranges from long-stay to meet-and-greet, and there are airport hotels on site if you've got an early departure.

Top-Notch Airport Facilities

Manchester Airport has just completed a major transformation of Terminal 2, a 1.3-billion-pound programme that has more than doubled the terminal's size. Most airlines now operate from Terminal 2, while Ryanair flies from Terminal 3 (which is itself getting a multi-million-pound expansion into the former Terminal 1 space). Here's what you'll find once you're through security.

  • Shopping: Two World Duty Free stores in Terminal 2, plus the new Boutique Mall with Chanel, Le Labo, and Jo Malone. WHSmith, Accessorize, and JD Sports are all airside too, so last-minute holiday bits are covered.

  • Food and drink: The Great Northern Market is the headline, a street-food hall with rotating pop-up kitchens that's a proper step up from the usual airport fare. Beyond that, you've got sit-down restaurants, Greggs, Costa, Wetherspoon's, and a good spread of grab-and-go options across both terminals.

  • Lounges: The 1903 Lounge and Escape Lounges operate across the terminals with complimentary food, drinks, and a quieter pre-flight experience. You can pre-book lounge access through us, along with fast track security if you want to skip the main queue.

  • Currency exchange: Desks available in departures and arrivals if you haven't sorted your euros or dollars before you arrive.

  • Charging and connectivity: Plenty of charging points throughout both terminals, so you can top up your phone before boarding without fighting over a plug socket.

What terminals does Manchester Airport have?

Manchester now operates from two terminals. Terminal 2 is the main terminal, freshly rebuilt as part of a major transformation programme, and is where most airlines operate from (Jet2, easyJet, TUI, Emirates, BA, Virgin Atlantic, and more). Terminal 3 is home to Ryanair and is currently being expanded. Terminal 1 has closed, with its entrance and security areas absorbed into the new Terminal 3. Check your airline's terminal before you travel.

Can I fly long-haul from Manchester?

Yes, and this is one of Manchester's biggest advantages. Emirates fly daily to Dubai, Etihad fly to Abu Dhabi, Qatar Airways fly to Doha, Turkish Airlines fly to Istanbul, and Virgin Atlantic fly direct to Orlando. TUI run seasonal directs to Cancun, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Barbados, Phuket, and the Maldives. New direct routes to Mumbai and Delhi launched recently too. You don't need to go to London for long-haul if you're in the North.

Can I get cheap holidays from Manchester?

Absolutely. Cheap Holidays are very much our thing and Manchester is very much our place so the two together are an iconic duo (like chips and cheese).

Manchester is one of the cheapest airports in the country because of the sheer number of airlines operating here. Jet2, easyJet, Ryanair, and TUI all compete on the most popular beach routes, which keeps fares sharp. Spain, the Canary Islands, and Turkey consistently offer the best value from Manchester, especially in shoulder season.

Can I get all-inclusive holidays from Manchester?

Yes, and the range is enormous. Turkey (via Antalya and Dalaman) is the top choice for all-inclusive value, with Jet2, easyJet, and TUI all flying direct. The Canary Islands, Balearics, Greece, Egypt, Tunisia, and Cape Verde all have strong all-inclusive options too. For long-haul all-inclusive, TUI run direct flights to Cancun and the Caribbean where the resort packages are brilliant.

How do I get to Manchester Airport by train?

Manchester Airport has its own railway station directly connected to the terminals. Regular services run from Manchester Piccadilly (about 20 minutes), and you can also get direct trains from Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and London Euston (via Avanti West Coast). It's one of the best rail-connected airports in the country.

Is Manchester Airport a good choice if I don't live in Manchester?

It's excellent for anyone in the North West, North Wales, Yorkshire, the East Midlands, and even parts of Scotland. The rail connections are strong, the M56 and M60 put it within easy reach by car, and the route network is so much bigger than smaller regional airports that the extra drive or train journey often pays for itself in cheaper flights and more destination choice.
