About MSC Cruises

The Mediterranean Way of Life (Even in Southampton)

you think all cruise ships are the same, you haven’t stepped on board an MSC ship.

Walking into the atrium of an MSC ship feels less like entering a vessel and more like stepping into a high-end Italian hotel lobby. There are Swarovski crystal staircases (seriously, each step costs thousands), smells of fresh espresso and homemade pizza, and a vibe that is distinctly, unashamedly European.

MSC Cruises is where you go if you want style without the stiff upper lip. It’s glamorous, it’s lively, and it offers incredible value for money.

Destinations and Departures: The World from Your Doorstep

Good news for those who hate airports: MSC has made Southampton a second home. Their newest, biggest ships (like the massive MSC Virtuosa) sail right from the UK year-round.

From Southampton: You can head north to the Norwegian Fjords for scenery that will break your camera, or south to France, Spain, and the Canaries. They also do shorter “mini-cruises” (2-4 nights) to places like Bruges or Rotterdam—perfect for testing the waters.

The Caribbean: If you do fly, MSC has a secret weapon: Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. It’s their private island in the Bahamas. No theme parks or plastic slides here—just a protected marine reserve with crystal clear water, coral reefs, and a lighthouse show at night.

Ships: Glitz and Glamour

MSC ships are stunning. They are famous for the Galleria—a massive indoor promenade lined with shops, bars, and restaurants, covered by the longest LED dome at sea. It changes from a stained-glass ceiling by day to a starry sky by night.

The World Class & Meraviglia Class: These are the giants. Think 19 decks, 6,000+ passengers, and enough space that you never feel crowded.

The Seaside Class: Designed to follow the sun. These ships have a huge waterfront boardwalk that wraps around the ship, so you can eat, drink, and walk closer to the sea than ever before.

Rooms: From Budget to Butler

Cabins for Everyone: MSC is great for families. They have “Cluster Cabins” where you can link up to three rooms together so the whole extended family has their own space but can open the doors to create one big apartment.

MSC Yacht Club: This is the game-changer. It’s a “ship within a ship.” You get a keycard that opens a private door to the front of the ship where everything is free, quiet, and exclusive. Private pool, private restaurant, private lounge, and yes—a butler. But when you want the big shows and water slides, you just open the door and rejoin the rest of the ship. It’s the best of both worlds.

Things to Do

MSC is high-energy. The vibe is very family-friendly, but there’s plenty for adults too.

Formula 1 Simulators: These aren’t arcade games; they are full-size F1 cars that simulate the actual track experience.

Robot Bartender: On some ships, you’ll meet “Rob,” a humanoid robot who mixes cocktails, tells jokes, and dances while he pours.

Entertainment: They go big on shows. We’re talking opera, acrobatics, and full-scale theatre productions. They perform in multiple languages or focus on visual acts (music/dance), so there’s no language barrier.

Aqua Parks: The pool decks are massive, often with Himalayan bridges (rope courses) suspended high above the water park.

Dining Options

Food is in MSC’s DNA.

The Buffet: This is not your average buffet. Because they are Italian-owned, the pizza is arguably the best at sea. They often make their own mozzarella fresh on board every day. Do not skip the pasta station.

Specialty Dining:

Butcher’s Cut: A proper American steakhouse serving giant cuts of Angus beef.

Hola! Tacos & Cantina: Street food style Mexican. Great for sharing platters and margaritas.

Kaito Teppanyaki: Sit around the grill and watch the chefs juggle eggs and catch shrimp in their pockets while cooking your dinner.

Good to Know

Status Match: This is huge. If you have loyalty status with another cruise line (or even some hotel chains), MSC will match it. You don’t have to start at the bottom; you can walk on board your very first MSC cruise with Gold or Diamond status perks.

The Experience Tiers: When you book, you pick an “Experience”:

Bella: Basic fare, assigned dining times.

Fantastica: Better rooms, flexible dining, room service delivery is free.

Aurea: Best rooms, spa access included, anytime dining.

Service Charge: Like most lines, a daily service charge is added to your bill. You can pay it upfront or on board.
