Let’s face it: some modern cruise ships feel less like ships and more like Las Vegas attached to a hull. If you miss the days when a cruise was about the sea, the service, and a really good cup of tea without having to ask for “English Breakfast,” then Ambassador is for you.
This is Britain’s newest cruise line, but it feels reassuringly classic. They aren’t trying to be the biggest or the flashiest. They are trying to be the friendliest.
Ambassador is for people who want to see the world without the hassle of airports, currency exchanges, or fighting for a sunbed at 6 am. It’s premium value, it’s adult-focused, and it feels like coming home.
The biggest selling point? You can probably drive to the ship. Ambassador specialises in no-fly cruising from right here in the UK.
Your Local Port: They don’t just sail from Southampton. Their main home is London Tilbury (easy for the M25), but they also sail from Newcastle, Dundee, Liverpool, Bristol, Belfast, and Falmouth.
The Itineraries: Because the ships are smaller, they can get into the heart of destinations.
Norway & Iceland: Sail deep into the fjords or hunt for the Northern Lights in winter.
British Isles: Explore the Hebrides, Orkneys, and Scilly Isles without a single ferry queue.
Winter Sun: Yes, you can sail all the way to the Canaries or even the Caribbean and back from Tilbury. No flights, no luggage limits.
Ambassador has two ships: Ambience and Ambition.
These are “human-sized” ships. You won’t need a map to find breakfast, and you won’t spend 20 minutes walking from your room to the pool.
The Vibe: It’s traditional. Think wide teak decks, tiered theatres, and a proper library. It’s designed for socialising, not shouting.
Sustainability: They are big on being eco-friendly. They’ve upgraded the engines to reduce emissions, so you can cruise with a clearer conscience.
Rooms: Your Own Space
The cabins are comfortable, classic, and come with everything you need (yes, including a kettle).
Solo Travellers: Ambassador is fantastic if you are travelling on your own. They dedicate a huge chunk of cabins specifically for solos, so you aren’t forced to pay a “single supplement” penalty on many sailings.
Views: From simple inside cabins to Ocean View rooms with big picture windows and Balcony Suites, there’s something for every budget.
You won’t find go-karts or climbing walls here. The entertainment is about quality and “enrichment.”
The Palladium: The main theatre puts on proper West End-style shows, comedy, and plays.
Daytime Activities: It’s all about learning something new. You might find a guest speaker talking about maritime history, a “Book Club” in Bronte’s Library, or arts and crafts sessions in the atelier.
Aces & Eights: A dedicated card room for Bridge or Whist. It’s a great way to make friends.
Wellness: The Green Sea Spa offers all the treatments you’d expect, plus a gym if you need to work off the gala dinner.
The food is designed for British palates—hearty, high quality, and plenty of it.
Buckingham & Holyrood Restaurants: The main dining rooms. Breakfast and lunch are often open-seating (sit where you like), while dinner is a traditional two-sitting affair. It’s elegant but friendly.
Borough Market: The buffet. It’s named after the famous London market and serves flavours from around the world in a more casual setting.
Specialty Dining (Small Cover Charge):
Saffron: An incredible journey into Indian gastronomy.
Sea & Grass: A premium steak and grill venue for a special night out.
Lupino’s: (On Ambition) A fresh, authentic Italian trattoria.
Primarily Adults-Only: Most sailings are for the over-18s (and the demographic is largely 50+). It’s peaceful. However, in the summer holidays, they do run specific “Multi-Generational” cruises where the grandkids are welcome.
Currency: Everything on board is in Pounds Sterling (£). No mental arithmetic required at the bar.
Dress Code: They like a bit of tradition. Days are casual, but evenings are “Smart Casual.” On longer cruises, there are “Gala Nights” where people genuinely enjoy dressing up (suits and cocktail dresses), though the buffet is always there if you want to stay in your comfy clothes.
Drinks: The prices are very reasonable compared to the big American lines, but the Ambassador Expedition Package (drinks package) is great value if you enjoy a few G&Ts and wine with dinner.
