Hisaronu is essentially one long street with a pine-covered hillside rising behind it, so this is a straight choice between two things rather than a list of areas.

• On or just off the strip puts every bar, restaurant and dolmus stop within a two-minute walk and means you can go back to your room whenever you like; it also means noise until three or four in the morning through July and August, which some people book precisely for.

• Up in the pines above town gets you cooler nights, a view down the valley, bigger pools and enough quiet to sleep, at the cost of a ten-minute walk back up a hill at the end of the evening.

Neither is the right answer. Families and anyone who wants their sleep tend to go uphill; groups tend to stay central. And wherever you land, the beach at Oludeniz is the same short ride down.

Cheap holidays to Hisaronu

The reason Hisaronu is cheap is the same reason it has no beach: it is 4km up the hill. A hotel of the same standard costs noticeably less here than it does on the seafront at Oludeniz, and what you give up is a walk to the sand rather than anything to do with the room. For a lot of people that is the single best-value trade in Turkey.

The dolmus is the other half of it. Minibuses run down to the beach and across to Fethiye constantly, they cost small change, and they go late enough that you never need a taxi or a hire car for a normal week. Add a meal out at around £10 to £15 / €12 to €18 and a beer at £2 to £3 / €2.50 to €3.50, and a day here costs a fraction of what the same day costs in Spain or Portugal.

Where it pays to think is board. Obviously Turkey do great all-inclusive but plenty of the hotels here run half board or full board as well, and given how cheap and how good the eating is on the strip, half board plus dinners out often works out better than paying up for drinks you will not get through.

Read exactly what your board covers before you book: à la carte restaurants frequently sit outside most all-inclusive packages, as do imported spirits, fresh juices and cocktails. And when you do spend, use bank machines rather than the ones on the strip, change money in the resort rather than at the airport, and take cash to the Monday market, where the price on the label is the opening offer rather than the price. There's a kids' club as well, so it isn't adults-only, but the layout does give you somewhere to escape to.

Beaches at nearby Oludeniz will be busiest July-August and prices reflect the popularity, so book early for best choice. Perfect for combining beach days, paragliding, and big nights out.

April, May, October (Brilliant shoulder season) - Proper good value without sacrificing sunshine. April, May and October hit comfortable 20-25°C, lovely for paragliding without peak summer heat. Still brilliant conditions for flying, and most bars and restaurants stay open. Beaches are quieter, hotels offer better rates, and you get that full Hisaronu experience without the peak summer crowds. Great balance of weather, activities, and atmosphere.

November to March (Off-season) - Most bars, restaurants, and tourist facilities close for winter. Temperatures drop to 10-18°C with rain, especially December-January. The resort basically hibernates except for a small ex-pat community. Not recommended unless you're specifically here for winter mountain activities or visiting friends.
