Alvor is one of the Algarve's best-kept secrets. This charming fishing village has held onto its traditional Portuguese character while the bigger resorts have grown up around it. Cobbled streets lead down to a pretty harbour, the seafood is as fresh as it gets, and the beaches on either side of the estuary are some of the finest on the coast. It's the kind of place where you can genuinely relax.

Things to do in Alvor 2026 / 2027

For families 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

  • 🏖️ Hit the beach - Praia de Alvor is a proper showstopper. Four miles of golden sand, dramatic rock formations, hidden caves to explore, and shallow waters on the estuary side that are brilliant for little ones. The western end near Tres Irmaos is quieter and more sheltered.

  • 🦩 Walk the Ria de Alvor boardwalk - the wooden boardwalk winds through the salt marshes and mud flats of the Alvor estuary, past flamingos, herons and wading birds. It's flat, pushchair-friendly, completely free, and the kids might even learn something.

  • 🥾 Walk to Quinta da Rocha - this nature reserve sits on the clifftop between Alvor and Praia da Rocha, with a well-marked trail through wild flowers and coastal scrub. The views down to the coves below are brilliant, and it's a great afternoon out for the whole family.

For couples 💑

  • 🍤 Eat fresh seafood on the harbour - the restaurants lining Alvor's harbour are some of the best (and best-value) in the Algarve. Grilled fish, cataplana stews, and clams with garlic are the local specialities. Grab a table overlooking the boats as the sun goes down and take your time.

  • 🏘️ Explore the Old Town - Alvor's village centre is compact and walkable, with narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and a handful of churches and chapels. The 16th-century Igreja Matriz is worth a look inside. It's the kind of place where you can wander without a plan and end up somewhere lovely.

  • 🛶 Try kayaking or paddleboarding - the Alvor estuary and coastline are perfect for getting out on the water together. The estuary is calmer than the open Atlantic, and several operators run guided trips from the beach and harbour during the summer season. A sunset paddle is properly romantic.

FAQs

How far is Alvor from Faro Airport?

About 45 minutes by car. Alvor sits on the western side of the Algarve, so it's a bit further from the airport than resorts like Albufeira or Vilamoura. When you book with us, we can sort your transfers as part of the package.

Do I need to pay tourist tax in Alvor?

Yes. Alvor is in the Portimao municipality, which charges a tourist tax of €2 per person per night in high season (April to October) and €1 in low season (November to March). It's capped at seven consecutive nights and children under 13 are exempt. The tax is collected by your hotel.

Is Alvor good for families?

Really good. The beach has calm, shallow waters on the estuary side that are perfect for little ones, and the village itself is safe, walkable and friendly. There's no big party scene to worry about. The Ria de Alvor boardwalk is a great free day out, and the waterparks at Slide & Splash and Aqualand are both within a 20-minute drive.

Is Alvor walkable?

The village centre is compact and easy to walk around. The harbour, Old Town, and restaurants are all within a few minutes of each other. The beach is about 1-2km from the centre depending on where you're staying, so it's walkable for most people, though some hotels offer shuttle services.

What's the food like in Alvor?

Outstanding, especially if you like seafood. Alvor is still a working fishing village, so the harbour restaurants serve fish and shellfish that was caught the same day. Grilled sardines, cataplana (a seafood stew cooked in a copper pot), and clams with garlic and coriander are the local specialities. Prices are noticeably cheaper than the bigger tourist resorts.

What's the weather like in Alvor?

The same glorious Algarve weather: over 300 days of sunshine a year. Summers hit 28-30°C with barely any rain, spring and autumn sit around 19-25°C, and winter stays mild at 15-17°C. The sea's warmest from July to October.
