💑 Couples

• 🏨 Costa Hotel. The standout pick in Pompeii and the top-rated hotel in town. This 4-star family-run gem has Vesuvius views from the balconies, a rooftop terrace, a well-loved restaurant serving local dishes, and a shuttle service into town. About 3 km from the ruins but the shuttle and Circumvesuviana trains make it easy. Staff get rave write-ups and the whole place has a proper home-from-home feel.

• 🏨 Hotel Tesoro Pompeiano. A stylish boutique 3-star with an eco-friendly vibe, solarium and sun terrace. Just 11 rooms so it's intimate and personal. Pompeii Holidays 2026/2027 - Travel Guide

Couples

• 🏛️ Spend a full day at the Archaeological Park. Get there early (9 am opening), grab the free map at the entrance, and hit the Amphitheatre end first while everyone else crowds the Forum. Tickets are €18 per adult. Book online via vivaticket to skip the queue.

• 🌋 Hike Mount Vesuvius together. It's about a 30-minute drive from Pompeii followed by a 20-minute walk to the crater rim. The views over the Bay of Naples from the top are unreal.

• 🍷 Wander the modern town of Pompeii in the evening. The pedestrian streets around Piazza Bartolo Longo are lined with trattorias and wine bars. Try a local Lacryma Christi wine grown on the volcanic slopes of Vesuvius.

• 🚢 Take the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento for a day trip. From there you can hop on a ferry to Capri or just soak up the clifftop views and lemon groves.

Families

• 🏛️ The ruins are a massive hit with kids. The Amphitheatre, the Forum, the old bakeries and the plaster casts of Vesuvius's victims (older kids find these fascinating, younger ones might need a heads-up) are all highlights. There are Baby Points inside the park for feeding and changing, and a picnic area near Porta Nola.

• 🌋 The Vesuvius crater hike is doable for kids aged about 8 and up. The path is wide and well-maintained, and seeing a real volcano up close is one of those experiences they'll never forget.

• 🍻 Pompeii's evening scene is low-key but good fun. The craft beer bars and wine spots around the centre are brilliant for a group evening, especially after a long day exploring.

• 🚌 Book a group day trip that combines Pompeii, Vesuvius and a vineyard visit. Several local operators run combo tours where you explore the ruins in the morning, hike the volcano after lunch, and finish with a wine tasting at a Vesuvius estate.

• 🛥️ Use Pompeii as a base and take the group to the Amalfi Coast. Boats from Sorrento or Salerno can whisk you along one of the most dramatic coastlines in Europe.

Culture

• 🏛️ Don't miss the Villa of the Mysteries at the far western end of the park. The frescoes here are some of the most famous and best-preserved in the ancient world. Allow at least 3 to 4 hours for the main Archaeological Park, more if you're a proper history buff.

• 🎭 The Pompeii Amphitheatre hosts concerts and performances every summer as part of the Beats of Pompeii (BOP) festival. Previous acts have included major international and Italian artists performing under the stars in a 2,000-year-old arena. Keep an eye on the lineup.

• 🏺 Take a day trip to Naples to visit the National Archaeological Museum. Many of the best artefacts found at Pompeii (the Alexander Mosaic, the erotic art collection, the bronzes) are actually housed here rather than at the site itself.
