Salt flats, three kilometres of golden sand and a properly slow Greek village rhythm. Alykes is the laid-back northeast corner of Zante, where the days run on horse-and-carriage time, the beaches are calm and shallow, and boat trips to Shipwreck Cove and the Blue Caves leave from just down the coast.

📌 Good to Know

  • ☀️ Weather: Summer highs around 30-32°C with up to 12 hours of sunshine. Sea temps hit 26°C by August and the water stays warm into October.

  • 💶 Money: Greece is on the Euro (€), but in sterling a pint should be £3 to £4, a sit-down taverna meal for £13 to £18 a head, and a quick gyros wrap for £3 to £4 when you need a fast bite.

  • 🧂 Fun Fact: The name Alykes means "salt flats" in Greek. The village grew around the old salt pans that supplied much of the island from the Venetian period through to the 1980s, and the disused flats are now a quiet wildlife haven for waders and small reptiles.

FAQs

How far is Alykes from the airport?

Around 17-18km – about 25-30 minutes' drive. We can sort your transfers when you book.

Is Alykes good for families?

Brilliant. The beach is sandy with shallow, warm waters that are perfect for kids, there are watersports and beach activities, and the resort has a relaxed family-friendly vibe without any rowdy nightlife. Horse and carriage rides are a proper hit with little ones.

What about Shipwreck Beach?

This is the one you've seen in all the photos – a stunning cove with a rusty shipwreck on white sand, surrounded by towering cliffs. You can only reach it by boat, and trips leave from near Alykes daily. Absolutely unmissable.

Can I visit the Blue Caves?

Yes! Boat trips usually combine Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves in one excursion. The caves are famous for their incredible blue water caused by light reflecting off the white limestone – you can swim right into them.

What's the nightlife like?

Chilled. There are cocktail bars, live music spots and friendly tavernas, but this isn't a party resort. Laganas is 35 minutes away if you want clubs and late nights, or Tsilivi for something in between.

What are the salt flats?

The abandoned salt pans that gave Alykes its name. They were used to produce salt for the whole island until the 1980s but now they're a wildlife habitat. You can walk along them and spot owls, geckos and other creatures.

Is there much to do beyond the beach?

Plenty. Boat trips to Shipwreck Beach and Blue Caves are the headline act. You can also explore the salt flats, visit Zante Town for history and shopping, take the tourist train to Pigadiakia village, or hire a car and beach-hop around the island. The north coast is quieter and absolutely beautiful.

When's the best time to visit?

June to September for guaranteed sunshine and warm seas. July and August are busiest but Alykes stays relaxed. May and October are lovely if you prefer fewer crowds – the sea's still warm enough for swimming in October.
