This gorgeous town sits right at the heart of the famous Makarska Riviera, nestled between the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea and the towering peaks of Biokovo Mountain - it's basically paradise with a dramatic backdrop!

Beach life meets mountain adventures

Makarska's got this brilliant crescent-shaped pebble beach lined with gorgeous pine trees that provide natural shade all the way to the water's edge. The promenade is absolutely buzzing with cafes, restaurants, and bars, plus it's perfect for those lovely evening strolls when the sun's setting behind the mountains. But here's the brilliant bit - when you fancy a break from beach lounging, you can literally hike up Croatia's second-highest mountain! The views from Biokovo's peaks are mental - on clear days, you can see all the way to Italy! Then you can run back down again and get back in the sea to cool off! Please note, although it will save you changing, we don't recommend climbing a mountain in your Speedos.

Perfect island-hopping base

The town's harbour is your gateway to some serious Croatian island magic. You can hop on a ferry and be on the famous Brač Island in no time, home to the legendary Zlatni Rat Beach that looks like a shark's fin jutting into the turquoise sea. It's brilliant for windsurfing thanks to the constant balmy breezes! Plus, you're perfectly positioned between Split (an hour north) and Dubrovnik (two hours south), so you can explore the best of Dalmatia.

Proper Croatian charm without the crowds

Unlike some of the busier Croatian hotspots, Makarska's still got that authentic local vibe. The historic town centre features the beautiful 18th-century Church of St. Mark and old merchant houses, while the harbour area comes alive with traditional konobas serving brilliant Dalmatian seafood. The nightlife's buzzing but not overwhelming, and prices are a bit cheaper than in some of the busier areas.
