Get to know Dubai a little better

Pristine white sands, warm Arabian waters and... towering skyscrapers? Tropical shores collide with a cosmopolitan cityscape along Dubai’s coastline, producing one of the most magical beach destinations in the world. Stunning beachfront hotels occupy a lot of the coastline here, owning large stretches of sand exclusive for guests and residents, so if you’re looking to combine city exploring with lazy beach days then this might just be the place for you. There are also a number of stunning public beaches if you’re just popping through for a day of soaking up the Arabian sun. Jumeirah and Kite Beach are the perfect place to forget about the hustle and bustle of city life and top up that tan while Umm Suqeim is THE place to catch a picture- perfect vibrant sunset.

Dubai is a prime example of traditional architecture and cultural traditions blending harmoniously with ultra-modern innovation and futuristic-looking buildings. With religion playing an important part of the culture here, you’ll regularly see intricately-designed mosques sharing space with record-breaking skyscrapers such as the Burj Khalifa. While Dubai has world-class shopping opportunities galore, for a true taste of culture, wander through the maze-like streets of a Dubai market, known as a ‘souk’ and barter with the locals for the best possible price. Showing hospitality is incredibly important to the people who live here, and you’ll often find some of the best service in the world, with the locals welcoming travellers with open arms.

Food & Drink

Dubai is home to some of the best food in the United Arab Emirates. With every cuisine imaginable and restaurants at every turn, you’re sure to find something to suit your taste buds in this plentiful city. Traditional Middle Eastern restaurants are abundant and showcase the vibrant flavours of the local cuisine. We recommend trying the batata harra – a spicy potato dish with garlic, red pepper, coriander and chilli, and no trip to the Middle East would be complete without a world-famous Shawarma – probably the best kebab you’ll ever have! Dubai is also home to countless lavish restaurants such as Nobu and Tresind, so whatever the occasion, you’ll never be disappointed.

Mainly contained to luxury hotels, Dubai is slowly becoming recognised as one of the up-and-coming, upmarket, party destinations. Midweek sees a lot of venues hosting ladies night with many places offering free entry and even free drinks to female visitors. The working week runs Sunday to Thursday here making Thursday and Friday the main event. Bottomless brunches are a popular Friday ritual, with many hotels and restaurants cooking up amazing food with unlimited drinks! And if you’re looking for something a little more laid-back then look out for bars and cafes with shisha terraces – the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring!

The Islamic holy month of Ramadan takes place between 23/04/2020 and 23/05/2020 this year. If you think Dubai closes down during Ramadan, you’d be wrong. How does late night shopping in the Ramadan sales sound? Exactly.

There may be some adjustments to services in restaurants during the day, or dining venues may be screened off to respect anyone who’s fasting, but Ramadan is a brilliant time to experience authentic Emirati culture. Almost all resort facilities and tourist attractions remain open as usual, too. Want to learn more? Why not drop by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU)? Here you can ask as many questions as you like, all the while surrounded by historic architecture. You can even sample some delicious, traditional Emirati food while your host teaches you about local customs.
