Porto Montenegro - one of the Adriatic's most glamorous marinas, with superyachts, designer shops, world-class restaurants and a waterfront promenade that genuinely rivals Monaco

Plavi Horizonti - a Blue Flag-certified sandy beach with shallow, crystal-clear water on the Luštica Peninsula, widely considered one of the finest beaches in Montenegro
The Đir - Tivat's beloved evening promenade tradition, where locals and visitors stroll the palm-lined Riva waterfront as the sun drops behind the mountains
The sunniest town in Montenegro - more sunshine hours than anywhere else on the Montenegrin coast
Good to Know - Holidays to Tivat
☀️ Tivat is the sunniest town in Montenegro, with summer highs of 28 to 32°C from June to August and warm, clear water perfect for swimming from June right through to October
💶 Montenegro uses the Euro (€). Tivat has a split personality when it comes to prices, Porto Montenegro operates at premium Adriatic rates, while the town itself and its traditional restaurants and bars offer excellent value. A beer costs €2 to €4 away from the marina, €6 to €10 in the upscale marina bars
🛥️ Porto Montenegro was built on the site of a former Yugoslav Navy arsenal and secret submarine base. The Cold War submarine tunnels cut directly into the rock are still visible from the water and accessible on boat tours, one of the most extraordinary hidden histories on the Adriatic coast
🏖️ Tivat Beaches 2026
Plavi Horizonti (Blue Horizons), the jewel of the Tivat Riviera and one of the finest beaches in Montenegro. A 300-metre-long beach with fine, medicinal sand and extremely clean, shallow water, surrounded by an olive grove and pine forest that provides natural shade, located on the Luštica Peninsula about 20 minutes from central Tivat. Blue Flag certified, with sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach bar and restaurant on site. The water is shallow enough for young children to walk far out and the setting, open sea ahead, mountains behind, is completely beautiful. The pick of the Tivat area for a full beach day.
Belane Beach - Tivat's main town beach, just 500 metres from the centre. Fine grey pebbles leading into warm, calm turquoise water, with sunbeds and umbrellas available throughout summer. The most convenient option for those staying in central Tivat who want a quick beach fix without taking a taxi.
Almara Beach Club - the upscale beach experience inside Porto Montenegro. Part of the Regent Porto Montenegro resort and open to the public for a daily entrance fee, with sand and pebble, beach volleyball, water sports and a premium beach club atmosphere. The most polished beach experience in Tivat, best for those wanting service, cocktails and a luxury vibe alongside the swimming.
Kalardovo Beach - located near the airport, this beach is unique for the presence of healing mud and is especially popular with families. Despite being near the airport, it remains quiet and peaceful. A 15-minute walk from the main road with a beach bar and restaurant on site.
Oblatno Beach - a more secluded option set away from the town centre with fine white sand and turquoise waters reminiscent of the Caribbean, around 15 minutes from Tivat. One of the most beautiful and least crowded beaches in the area.
Ostrvo Cvijeća (Island of Flowers) - a small, lush islet connected to the coast by a narrow causeway, with several sandy beaches along its shore, the ruins of a 6th-century Benedictine monastery and a restaurant serving fresh seafood under the trees. One of Tivat's most charming and least-visited spots.
📍 Where to Stay in Tivat 2026
Porto Montenegro and the Marina area is the most glamorous and internationally recognised base - designer boutiques on the doorstep, waterfront dining, the Regent Hotel and the evening energy of the marina. Best for couples and anyone drawn to the high-end Adriatic experience.
Central Tivat and the Riva Promenade puts you on the traditional waterfront where the đir evening stroll takes place, with the Jadran sailing ship as a backdrop. More local in character than the marina, better value and the easiest base for exploring the whole bay by bus or taxi.
Donja Lastva and the northern beaches offer a quieter, more residential setting with private pontoons, Waikiki Beach within easy reach and a 10-minute drive to Porto Montenegro. Better for families wanting calm and space.

FAQs
Is Tivat worth visiting?
Is Tivat worth visiting?
Yes, though Tivat is a different kind of destination from Kotor or Budva and rewards those who understand what it offers. The main things Tivat is famous for are the luxurious Porto Montenegro, beautiful landscapes and its convenience as a starting point for exploring Montenegro. If you're looking for a UNESCO walled city or a party beach scene, Kotor and Budva do those things better. But Tivat wins on a different set of criteria entirely.Tivat is the sunniest town in Montenegro and often divides opinions, but it's an excellent base if you want to escape the chaos of peak-season Kotor while remaining within easy reach of every must-see sight by bus, taxi or boat. Porto Montenegro is one of the most glamorous marina developments on the Adriatic and genuinely worth an evening regardless of where you're staying on the Riviera. The beaches, the Đir promenade tradition, the Naval Heritage Collection with its restored Yugoslav submarine, the Solila flamingo reserve and the proximity to Kotor, Perast and Budva all add up to a destination that works particularly well as a relaxed, well-connected base for the whole bay.
What is Porto Montenegro?
What is Porto Montenegro?
Porto Montenegro is a luxury superyacht marina and residential village built on the site of a former Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav naval arsenal on the western shore of Tivat Bay. The Naval Heritage Museum houses over 300 exhibits of the area's naval history, including a restored Yugoslav submarine, the P-821 Hero, launched in 1967, which during its 23-year career sailed 46,659 nautical miles, submerged 901 times and spent 726 days at sea.
Today the site has been transformed into one of the most prestigious marina addresses on the Adriatic. Designer boutiques, world-class restaurants, a five-star Regent Hotel, the Almara Beach Club and a promenade lined with superyachts from across the globe sit where submarines were once repaired and Cold War naval operations were planned. The contrast between the history and the current glamour is extraordinary and entirely unique to Tivat.
Porto Montenegro is free to walk around and explore, you don't need to be staying at the Regent or mooring a yacht to enjoy the promenade, the restaurants and the evening atmosphere. It is genuinely one of the most spectacular free experiences on the Montenegro Riviera. Porto Montenegro also hosts events throughout the season including fashion shows, sailing regattas and concerts
Is Tivat better than Kotor or Budva?
Is Tivat better than Kotor or Budva?
It depends entirely on what you want. The honest answer is that all three serve different purposes and the best choice depends on your holiday.
Kotor wins on historic beauty, dramatic scenery and cultural depth. The UNESCO-listed walled city, St John's Fortress and the extraordinary Bay of Kotor setting are genuinely world-class. It gets very crowded in peak season with cruise ship passengers during the day, but the evenings are magical.
Budva wins on beaches, nightlife and energy. If you want sandy beaches, beach clubs and a party scene that runs until sunrise, Budva is where you want to be. The Old Town is beautiful but the resort's primary character is hedonistic in the best possible way.
Tivat wins on glamour, calm and practicality. Its location between Budva and Kotor makes it an excellent base, it is less crowded and it is easier to find parking in high season. Porto Montenegro delivers a luxury marina experience that neither Kotor nor Budva can match. The beaches were in high supply with variety on offer, whether pebbles, sand or just the promenade edge and the town had reasonably priced sunbeds and cafes with cheap food and drink and even cheaper stores within walking distance.
