Beaches in Porto Santo

Praia do Porto Santo - The main event, and the reason the island exists as a holiday destination at all. Nine kilometres of fine golden sand running unbroken from Vila Baleira down to Ponta da Calheta, backed by low dunes and almost nothing else. It shelves gently the entire way, the water stays clear and calm, and the busiest access point (Praia da Fontinha, right by the town) is still nothing like a Mediterranean resort beach in August.

• Ponta da Calheta - The southern tip, where the sand runs out into volcanic rock and natural pools open up at low tide. The view across to Ilheu da Cal is the one everybody photographs, and there is a bar-restaurant right there for when you have finished photographing it. Parking is tight, so go early or take the bus.

• Zimbralinho - A pebble cove on the west coast reached by a steep set of steps, and worth every one of them. The water is glass-clear and the snorkelling is the best on the island. It falls into shade in the afternoon, so make it a morning.

• Porto dos Frades - A small beach on the north coast with tidal pools and some genuinely strange wind-sculpted rock formations. A 1960s tunnel cuts through to the far side, where the old salt works and cannery used to be. Quiet even in high summer.

• Porto das Salemas - Natural rock pools on the north coast, reachable only at low tide down a steep fifteen-minute scramble. Check the tide table before you commit, then have the place largely to yourself.

Local Lingo

English gets you through the hotels and the beach bars without any trouble, but Porto Santo is a small island with about five thousand residents and a very short memory for tourists who make no effort. Learn five words and you will get the good table.

• Casa Colombo, Vila Baleira - The house Columbus lived in, now a small museum with maps, model ships and a room on the island's pirate-raid years. Twenty minutes and everyone learns something. Closed on Tuesdays outside high summer, so check before you walk over.

• The pier at Vila Baleira - A long concrete pontoon out into water so clear you can count the fish from above it. Local kids bomb off the end all summer, which is either a spectator sport or a dare, depending on your children.

• Pico de Ana Ferreira - An old quarry face of hexagonal basalt columns that look like a pipe organ carved into the hillside. Short walk, big payoff, and the geology does the explaining for you.

• Bike the beach road - Hire bikes in Vila Baleira or at the hotels and ride the flat coast road south. It is nine kilometres of beach on one side and almost nothing on the other, with a bar at Ponta da Calheta as the finish line.

• Fonte da Areia - Wind-carved sandstone cliffs on the north coast around an old freshwater spring, with fossilised dunes just inland. Odd, photogenic, and free.

• Miradouro das Flores - The postcard viewpoint, looking out over Ilheu da Cal and impossibly turquoise water. On a clear day the whole Madeira archipelago lines up on the horizon. Drive up, park, stay for sunset.

• A thalassotherapy session - The island's spa treatments are built around the local seawater and that mineral-heavy sand. Getting slowly buried in warm sand as a medical procedure is exactly as good as it sounds.

• Boat trip round the island - Half-day sailings out of the marina take in the sea cliffs, the islets, and a snorkel stop, with a decent chance of dolphins on the way back.

• Dinner at Ponta da Calheta - Grilled fish and a bottle of Madeira white at the southern tip with the sun going down behind Ilheu da Cal. It is the single best table on the island and it costs a fraction of what the view is worth.

• Pico do Castelo - A volcanic cone with the ruins of a sixteenth-century fort on top, reachable by car and a short climb. Fewer people than the main viewpoints and a better story.

• Porto Santo Golfe - Seve Ballesteros designed it, it opened in 2004, and three holes run right along the clifftops. The signature par 3 is played across a gorge to a green on the edge, which will settle any argument about who is actually the best golfer among you.

• Diving the wrecks - Two ships were deliberately sunk offshore and now sit around thirty metres down as artificial reefs. Add Baixa das Bicudas for the barracuda shoals and the volcanic arches.

• Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã - The island's best walk, a there-and-back route of about 5.4km taking roughly two and a half hours, climbing into terrain you cannot otherwise reach. The official trails now need a booked time slot, so sort it online before you fly.

• Beach bars at Cabeco da Ponta - Tia Maria is the one that keeps going after dark, with tables on the sand and a crowd that builds through the evening. Pé na Água runs live sessions right through the summer.

• Windsurfing and paddleboarding - The bay is sheltered enough for total beginners and breezy enough to be worth it, and every hotel and beach operator rents kit by the hour.

• The Wine Festival, late August - Two days of public grape-stomping, free tastings and the entire island in the street. If your group is picking dates, this is the one to aim at.

• Madeira - The main island of the archipelago: laurel forests older than most countries, levada walks that thread along cliff faces, a cable car up to Monte and a toboggan run back down, and a New Year fireworks display that has held a world record.

• Funchal - The capital, and a proper city break with a beach habit. The old town's painted doors, the Mercado dos Lavradores for tropical fruit and scabbard fish, and more good restaurants per square mile than anywhere else in the archipelago.

• Canico - A quieter coastal base with a marine reserve on its doorstep, which makes it the best diving and snorkelling spot on the main island. Sea-level lidos, clifftop hotels and easy runs into the capital.

• Machico - Where the Portuguese first landed in 1419, and now home to one of the few golden-sand beaches on the main island. A working town with a proper harbour, which means the seafood is landed about eighty metres from where you eat it.

• Portugal - Lisbon's hills and tiled facades, the Algarve's cliffs and coves, the wine country of the Douro, and a whole Atlantic coastline of surf towns in between. One of the best-value countries in Europe for eating extremely well.

• Algarve - Golden cliffs, hidden coves reached by boat, and one of the biggest concentrations of family resorts in southern Europe. Also Europe's most reliable golf coast, with over thirty courses.

• Lisbon - Seven hills, yellow trams, pastéis de nata straight from the oven in Belém, and a nightlife scene in Bairro Alto that does not really get going until midnight. Beaches on the train line, too.
