Canico Weather
Madeira enjoys a wonderful sub-tropical climate due to its location and mountainous landscape, and Canico's position on the sunny south coast means it is blessed with particularly fine weather. The sun shines all year and temperatures range from a low of 16° Celsius in the winter to about 25° Celsius in the summer. Outside the summer you should expect some rainfall, but these showers rarely last very long. It doesn't matter when you want to take off on your Canico holidays, the sun will be waiting for you!
Landscape
Madeira is known as a garden island, and if you are enjoying a Canico holiday the countryside around the town will show you why that is: lush vegetation, rugged hills and dramatic coastline create scenes of outstanding natural beauty. At nearby Garajau you can walk along the rocky cliff tops and enjoy the spectacular views over Funchal and out to the Atlantic.
The coast at Canico de Baixo offers access to the immaculate waters of Madeira's marine reserve, Reserva Natural Parcial do Garajau. For anyone with an adventurous streak on holidays in Canico, the Manta Diving Centre hires out snorkelling and diving equipment so you can explore the natural wonders of the sea.
Culture
Canico is conveniently situated between Madeira's two main towns, Funchal and Machico, so offers easy access to the culture and festivals in both. In February or March each year Funchal hosts one of Europe's biggest carnivals, a Rio-style parade and weekend-long party. Funchal's New Years celebrations have gained a reputation as being some of the best in the world, with an enormous firework display at midnight.
In Machico, meanwhile, it is the last day in August that the town puts on a carnival that culminates in a big bonfire at the town's old beacon on Pico do Facho.
Adventure
The Largo Padre Lomelino is the town's pretty central square and an absolute must see for anyone on holidays to Canico. Commanding one side of the square is a distinctive Baroque church. To the south is the Quinta Splendida, a villa complex set in the estate of a 16th Century mansion, with beautifully landscaped and luscious botanical gardens that are open to guests of the main hotel and the public.
Nightlife
Canico boasts a selection of great eateries and much of the tranquil nightlife revolves around a relaxing evening meal. La Terraca is a restaurant with a terrace offering pleasant views along the coast and a good meat and fish menu. The Atlantis restaurant has a swimming pool, views of the sea and an interesting seafood menu. Canico's nightlife is nice and serene, typical of holidays in Madeira, perfect for laid-back or romantic evenings.
