• 🚲 Hire bikes and cycle the city walls together - the 4km loop on top of the Renaissance ramparts is flat, traffic-free and brilliant for all ages. Hire shops are dotted around the gates, from about €5 an hour.

• 🏛️ Climb Torre Guinigi for the famous rooftop garden - kids are fascinated by the oak trees growing 44 metres up. Torre delle Ore (the clock tower) is another good one if they've got energy to burn.

• 🌿 Spend a morning at the Orto Botanico (Botanical Gardens) - founded in 1820, it's a calm, shady spot with interesting plants and a pond that comes with its own local legend about a devil's chariot.

• 🍷 Book a wine tasting at Enoteca Vanni, the oldest wine shop in Lucca, with underground cellars dating back to the 2nd century. Their sommelier-led tastings through Tuscan appellations are a proper treat.

• 🍕 Do a food crawl through the old town - from pizza al taglio and focaccia to craft beer at De Cervesia on Via Fillungo (pints from €5), Lucca punches well above its weight for a small city.

• 🏛️ Day trip to Pisa - it's under 30 minutes by train, so you can do the Leaning Tower photos and be back in Lucca for dinner. Florence is about 1.5 hours by train if you fancy something bigger.

🎨 Culture

• 🏛️ Cattedrale di San Martino (the Duomo) houses the Volto Santo, a medieval wooden crucifix that's been a pilgrimage draw for over a thousand years. The carved facade alone is worth the visit.

• 🏛️ Chiesa di San Michele in Foro sits on the old Roman forum and has one of the most elaborately carved Romanesque facades in Tuscany. Free to enter.

• 🏰 Palazzo Pfanner is a 17th-century palace with gorgeous baroque gardens, open April to November (€6.50 entry). The family still lives there - and they rent out holiday apartments inside.

• 📚 Lucca Comics & Games runs every autumn (late October/early November) and is one of the biggest comics and gaming festivals in Europe - the whole city centre transforms.
