Palermo is Sicily's wild, wonderful capital and it hits you like a wall of sensory stimulation, we're talking noise, colour and the smell of frying arancini the moment you step outside. This is a city where Arab, Norman, Byzantine and Baroque architecture crash into each other on the same street, where the street food markets are louder than a football stadium, and where you can go from exploring 8,000 mummified bodies in the morning to sunbathing on a white sand beach by lunchtime. It's chaotic, it's beautiful, and the food is some of the best (and cheapest) in all of Italy. If you want the real, unfiltered Sicily, this is where you come.
๐ Good to Know for your Palermo Holidays 2026 / 2027
โ๏ธ Summers are hot (31-34ยฐC) and dry. Spring and autumn are gorgeous at 20-26ยฐC with fewer crowds and lower prices. Winters are mild (15-17ยฐC) and rainy but still much warmer than the UK.
๐ถ Palermo is one of the cheapest cities in Italy. Street food like arancini (โฌ1.50-3), panelle sandwiches (โฌ2-3) and sfincione (โฌ1.50-2.50 a slice) means you can eat a proper lunch for under โฌ7. A sit-down meal with wine is around โฌ15-25 per person.
๐ Palermo's Arab-Norman architecture is UNESCO World Heritage. The Palazzo dei Normanni and its Cappella Palatina, the Cathedral and several churches form one of the most unusual architectural collections in Europe - a fusion of Islamic, Byzantine and Western styles you won't see anywhere else.
โจ Palermo Highlights

๐ Palermo's three historic markets (Ballaro, Vucciria and Capo) are an assault on the senses - mountains of fresh produce, shouting vendors, sizzling street food stalls and arancini the size of your fist
๐๏ธ Mondello Beach is just 11km from the city centre - a gorgeous crescent of white sand and turquoise water backed by Monte Pellegrino. Proper Caribbean vibes in Sicily
๐ The Capuchin Catacombs house around 8,000 mummified bodies displayed in underground corridors. It's eerie, fascinating and completely unique
๐ญ The Teatro Massimo is the third largest opera house in Europe and the set for the final scene of The Godfather Part III. You can take tours during the day or catch a performance

๐๏ธ Palermo Holidays 2026/2027 - Travel Guide
Palermo rewards exploring. Get lost in the back streets, follow your nose to the markets, and say yes to whatever the locals are eating. Here's how to make the most of it.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Families
๐๏ธ Mondello Beach is about 30 minutes by bus from the centre and is proper family-friendly - white sand, shallow water, and loads of lidos with sunbeds, umbrellas and food. In summer it gets busy, so arrive early to grab a good spot.
๐ Take the kids on a street food crawl through the Ballaro or Capo markets. Arancini, panelle, crocche and sfincione are all cheap, tasty and fun to eat standing up. Even fussy eaters will find something they love.
๐ฐ The Palazzo dei Normanni is impressive for older kids, especially the Cappella Palatina with its golden mosaics. The Royal Apartments have throne rooms and painted ceilings that feel properly regal.
๐ The Bioparco di Sicilia is about 30 minutes from the centre and has animals, a small waterpark area and picnic space. Good for a half-day break from the city.
๐ Couples
๐ Walk up Monte Pellegrino for sunset views over the city and the bay. You can drive or take bus 812 to the top. The Santuario di Santa Rosalia (a cave church built into the mountain) is up there too and worth a look.
๐ท Book a street food and wine tour through the old town. Most 3-hour tours take you through 2-3 markets with tastings at multiple stalls, plus local wine. It's the best way to understand the food culture here.
๐ญ Catch a performance at the Teatro Massimo. The opera season runs from autumn through spring, but the building itself is open for guided tours during the day year-round. The rooftop tour has incredible views over the city.
๐ถ Take a boat trip along the coast to the Capo Gallo nature reserve, where you can swim in crystal-clear coves with the mountains rising behind. Several operators run half-day trips from the port.
๐ Groups
๐ป The Vucciria market area comes alive at night with cheap bars, live music and street food stalls. It's chaotic, loud and brilliant for a night out with mates. Drinks are cheap and the atmosphere is electric.
๐๏ธ Hire a car and do a day trip to Monreale (about 8km from the centre). The Cathedral has golden mosaics that rival anything in Istanbul or Ravenna, and the cloisters are stunning. Then carry on to Segesta for the ancient Greek temple.
๐๏ธ Grab a group and head to Mondello for a beach day. The Art Nouveau bathhouse (Stabilimento Balneare) is gorgeous, and the seafront is lined with restaurants where you can eat fresh seafood with your feet practically in the sand.
๐๏ธ Culture
๐ The Capuchin Catacombs are unlike anything you'll see anywhere else - around 8,000 mummified bodies displayed in underground corridors, some remarkably well-preserved. It's macabre, fascinating and not for the squeamish.
๐ The Arab-Norman circuit is Palermo's UNESCO headline - the Palazzo dei Normanni, Cappella Palatina, San Giovanni degli Eremiti (with its distinctive red domes), the Cathedral, and several other churches that blend Islamic, Byzantine and Western architectural styles.
๐ผ๏ธ The Palazzo Abatellis houses Sicily's regional art gallery, including Antonello da Messina's Annunciation and a huge 15th-century fresco of the Triumph of Death. It's one of the most underrated art collections in Italy.
๐บ๏ธ Nearby Destinations
๐๏ธ Cefalu - About 1 hour by train along the coast. A gorgeous seaside town with a sandy beach, Norman cathedral and a dramatic cliff backdrop. Makes a brilliant day trip or a great next stop.
