Bardolino is Lake Garda's wine town. Set on the eastern shore with its own famous red wine (Bardolino) and a gorgeous rosé (Chiaretto), it's the kind of place where evenings revolve around lakeside aperitivos, long dinners and strolls along the promenade as the sun drops behind the mountains. The old town is compact and walkable, packed with restaurants, wine bars and gelato shops, and the big Thursday morning market draws visitors from all over the lake. It's a more grown-up, relaxed vibe than the southern shore's theme park towns, which makes it a brilliant pick for couples and foodies.

FAQs

How do I get to Bardolino?

Fly into Verona Villafranca airport (about 30km away). There's no train station in Bardolino itself, so you'll need a transfer, taxi or hire car from the airport. Buses run from Verona to Bardolino but aren't the quickest. For the easiest option, book your transfers through On the Beach - you get a good price and your driver will be waiting at arrivals for you when you land - no faffing around in a queue for a taxi at the airport.

Is Bardolino good for families?

It works well, especially for families with older kids who'll appreciate the lake, the cycling and the food. For younger children and theme park access, Peschiera del Garda is a better base as it's right next to Gardaland. Bardolino is still only about 20 minutes from the parks by car.

What's the food and drink like?

Brilliant. Bardolino is a proper foodie town. Local specialities include lake fish (try lavarello or pike), handmade pasta, and olive oil produced in the surrounding hills. The local Bardolino red wine and Chiaretto rosé are excellent and very affordable - a glass at a lakeside bar will cost around €3-5.

Can I get around the lake from Bardolino?

Easily. Ferries run regularly from Bardolino's harbour to Garda, Lazise, Sirmione and further afield. Buses run along the eastern shore. Cycling the lakeside path is also brilliant for reaching neighbouring towns.
