Riva del Garda sits at the dramatic northern tip of Lake Garda, between towering mountains and the Dolomite foothills. It's a completely different vibe to the sunnier, flatter southern shore - this is the adventure sports capital of the lake, famous across Europe for windsurfing, sailing, mountain biking and climbing. But it's not all adrenaline. The old town is gorgeous, the lakefront promenade is proper relaxing, and the mountain scenery is jaw-dropping. If you want a Lake Garda jollie with a bit more edge to it, Riva is your spot.
📌 Good to Know for your Holidays to Riva del Garda 2026 / 2027
☀️ Summers are warm (24-27°C) but not as scorching as the southern lake thanks to the mountain breezes. Spring and autumn are gorgeous for hiking and cycling at 18-22°C. Winters are chilly (10-14°C) but the Christmas markets are brilliant.
💶 A beer costs around €4-5, a pizza €8-12, and a pasta lunch €10-15. Prices are similar to the rest of Lake Garda - a bit more than inland Italy but proper reasonable for a lakeside resort.
🏔️ Riva sits in Trentino-Alto Adige, which means the food has an Alpine twist alongside the Italian classics. Think canederli (bread dumplings), carne salada (cured beef) and strudel alongside your pizza and pasta.

🏔️ Riva del Garda Holidays 2026/2027 - Travel Guide
Riva's got a brilliant mix of adventure, relaxation and culture. Here's what to get stuck into.
👨👩👧👦 Families
🏖️ The Spiaggia dei Sabbioni is Riva's main beach - it's free, pebble-and-grass with playgrounds, bars and showers. The water is clean and clear, though it stays a bit cooler than the south of the lake (18-20°C in summer). Water shoes are handy for the pebbly bits.
🚡 Take the glass funicular up to the Bastione for spectacular panoramic views over Riva and the northern lake. It only takes about 3 minutes and there's a restaurant at the top. You can also walk up in about 20 minutes if the kids have energy to burn.
🚲 Hire bikes and ride the flat lakefront cycle path towards Torbole (about 4km). It's easy, scenic and completely safe for families. You can stop for gelato in Torbole and ride back, or carry on further along the lake.
🏰 The Rocca fortress in the old town houses the Alto Garda Museum with exhibits from prehistoric times to the present day. Kids can climb the Mastio tower for brilliant views. In winter, it hosts a Casa di Babbo Natale (Santa's House) which is a proper treat for little ones.
💑 Couples
🌅 Walk or cycle the Sentiero del Ponale, an old cliff road carved into the mountainside above the lake. The first 3km to the Bar Belvedere viewpoint is stunning and relatively easy. Grab a drink at the top and soak up the views before heading back.
🍷 Book a table at one of the lakefront restaurants on Piazza III Novembre for an evening meal as the sun goes down over the mountains. The local carne salada (Trentino cured beef) and lake fish are the specialities to try.
🧖 Several hotels in Riva have excellent spa and wellness facilities. The Lido Palace spa is particularly special, but the Astoria Resort's "Natural Feeling" experience and the Portici's wellness area are also cracking options.
⛵ Book a sailing lesson or a private boat trip on the lake. The northern end of Lake Garda is quieter than the busy south, and the mountain backdrop makes it feel properly dramatic.
🎉 Groups
🏄 Head to neighbouring Torbole for windsurfing, kitesurfing or wing foiling. The afternoon "ora" wind is the one to aim for. Several schools offer beginner lessons, and it's one of the best spots in Europe for these sports.
🧗 Arco, about 5km inland from Riva, is one of Europe's most famous sport climbing destinations with over 60 routes across six sectors. There are options for all abilities, from beginner crags to serious multi-pitch routes.
🚴 Rent mountain bikes and hit the trails. The area around Riva has hundreds of kilometres of marked bike paths, from easy lakefront rides to hair-raising downhill routes in the mountains. EnergiaBike in the town centre rents bikes and offers local tips.
🍻 The old town has a cracking selection of bars, restaurants and gelaterias clustered around Piazza III Novembre and the lakefront. It's a compact, walkable town so an evening out is easy to organise.
🏛️ Culture
🏛️ Climb the 165 wooden steps of the Torre Apponale (34m tall, in the main square) for one of the best views over Riva's rooftops and the lake. Look out for the Anzolim - the little bronze angel on top that's the symbol of the town.
🌊 Visit the Parco Grotta Cascata Varone, a dramatic waterfall inside a cave gorge about 3km from the centre. The water drops 100 metres through a narrow limestone gorge and the walkways take you right up close. Properly impressive.
📜 The Marocco district is the oldest part of Riva, with narrow medieval streets, colourful buildings and a real sense of history. It's quieter than the main piazza and brilliant for a wander with a camera.

Yes - the lake is clean and clear and swimmable from June through to mid-September. The water at the northern end is cooler than the south (around 18-20°C) because of the mountain rivers feeding in. The main Spiaggia dei Sabbioni beach is pebbly so water shoes are handy.

Riva is more adventurous and mountain-focused. The scenery is more dramatic (sheer cliffs, Dolomite foothills), the vibe is more active (windsurfing, climbing, hiking, cycling), and it sits in the Trentino region so the food has an Alpine influence. The southern towns like Sirmione and Desenzano are flatter, warmer, and more about classic lakeside relaxation.
