Climate Overview
India’s weather is a proper mixed bag, with its tropical coastline keeping things warm all year and the odd downpour thrown in for good measure. Expect sizzling temperatures from January to December, so you’re never far from a sun-soaked escape. Most of India’s beaches hug the west and east coasts, but each region has its own twist. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, for example, feel a bit more laid-back and humid, while Goa boasts some of the country’s most popular sandy stretches and a real party spirit.
The monsoon is the main event in summer, transforming parts of the country with a whopper of rain, but it’s the winter months that win for beachgoers. Whether you fancy the buzz of Goa, the coconut-fringed shores of Kerala, or an island adventure, you’ll find a season that suits your style.
Seasons Overview
Spring (March - May): Spring in India is hot and dry to start, with March to May bringing air temperatures up to 34°C and barely a drop of rain until May, when showers start to creep in. Humidity rises as the season goes on, but there’s still plenty of sunshine - especially early in spring - making this a great time for those who like it warm but not too sticky.
Summer (June - August): Summer is when India’s famous monsoon rolls in. June to August sees temperatures drop a touch to around 29-31°C, but humidity soars to nearly 90%. Rainfall is off the charts, peaking at 990mm in July, so expect short days and dramatic showers. The beaches are quieter, but if you love lush scenery, this is your season.
Autumn (September - November): Autumn brings a welcome break from the rain and a return to longer sunny days. September starts off damp, but by November, rainfall drops to just 30mm, air temperatures climb back to 33°C, and humidity eases off. Beaches are lively again, and the sea’s still warm - perfect for late-year holibobs.
Winter (December - February): Winter in India is a sunseeker’s dream. From December to February, you’ll enjoy 32°C days, barely any rain, and up to 10 hours of sunshine. Humidity sits at a comfortable 67-68%, and the sea is reliably warm. If your idea of winter involves flip-flops, this is the time to visit.
Best Time To Visit
The best time for a beach holiday in India is from November to April. During these months, you get the winning combo of high temperatures - up to 34°C - minimal rain, and loads of sunshine. The sea stays warm at 27-30°C, so swimming’s always on the cards. Goa and Kerala really come alive, while the Andaman Islands are at their best for winter sun. If you want top-tier conditions and can do without the drama of the summer monsoon, stick to the cooler, drier months. Summer is lush, but be prepared to dodge hefty showers and settle for shorter days. Autumn’s good too, especially from October onwards, but winter is the real crowd-pleaser.
