Greece's coolest second city is where ancient history meets proper nightlife vibes. Think buzzing waterfront bars, an incredible food scene, and enough Byzantine gems to keep you busy for days

🎉 Good to know - holidays to Thessaloniki 2026

  • ☀️ Weather - Summers are properly hot at 30-32°C with long sunny days, making the waterfront bars and rooftop pools essential. Winters are cooler (8-12°C) but the city stays lively year-round thanks to its huge student population. Spring and autumn (18-27°C) are the sweet spot for sightseeing without melting.

  • 💶 Prices - A pint costs around €4-5 in the city centre, with Ladadika and waterfront spots at the higher end. A taverna meal for two with starters, mains and wine comes in at €25-40. Thessaloniki is noticeably cheaper than Athens for food and drink, which is a proper bonus.

  • 🍽️ Fun fact - Thessaloniki was named UNESCO's first City of Gastronomy in Greece. The city is also where the Cyrillic alphabet was created by Saints Cyril and Methodius in the 9th century, and its 15 UNESCO-listed Byzantine churches make it one of the most historically significant cities in the Mediterranean.

✨ Thessaloniki Holiday Highlights 2026 / 2027

  • 🏛️ Home to 15 UNESCO World Heritage Byzantine churches, Roman ruins including the Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda, and the iconic White Tower. This is a city where 2,300 years of history is woven into the streets you'll walk down on your way to dinner.

  • 🎓 One of the youngest cities in Greece thanks to the 100,000+ students at Aristotle University. That means brilliant nightlife, affordable prices, independent bars, live music venues, and a creative energy you won't find in most tourist destinations.

  • 🚇 The brand new metro opened in late 2024, connecting 13 stations across the city with fully automated, driverless trains. It's clean, modern, and makes getting around an absolute breeze. The Kalamaria extension adds five more stations in 2026.

FAQs

How do I get from Thessaloniki Airport to my hotel?

Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) is about 15km from the city centre, so around 25-30 minutes by taxi or transfer. The easiest option is booking transfers through us when you sort your package. Taxis from the rank cost around €20-25 to the centre. The bus (line 01N) runs to the city centre and costs about €2, but it's not ideal with heavy luggage. If you're staying in Perea, you're much closer to the airport, around 5-10 minutes.

Is Thessaloniki walkable?

Very. The city centre is compact and flat, with most major attractions within 20 minutes' walk of each other. Aristotelous Square, the White Tower, Ladadika, and the waterfront promenade are all connected by easy pedestrian routes. The only area that requires a bit of effort is Ano Poli (Upper Town), which sits on a hill, but taxis or the bus will get you there in minutes.

What's the best time to visit Thessaloniki?

It depends what you're after. May to June and September to October give you warm weather (20-27°C) without the peak summer heat, plus the city is buzzing with cultural events. July and August are hot (30-32°C) but great for combining with a beach trip to Halkidiki. Winter is cooler but the city stays lively year-round, with brilliant cafe culture and fewer tourists.

Is Thessaloniki safe?

Yes, Thessaloniki is considered very safe for tourists. The city centre is busy and well-lit until late, and Greeks are famously friendly and welcoming. Use the same common sense you would in any European city. Keep an eye on your belongings around busy tourist spots and you'll be absolutely fine.

What food should I try in Thessaloniki?

Start with bougatsa, the city's famous custard-filled pastry that locals queue for every morning. Trigona Panoramatos are triangular cream-filled phyllo pastries from the Panorama district. For savoury, you can't beat souvlaki from a traditional psistaria (grill house), and the mezze culture here is incredible. Head to Modiano Market for local produce, or to Ladadika for a late-night spread of small plates with ouzo and tsipouro.
