"Ayia Napa's reputation as party central is well earned, but the resort has a far quieter side most visitors never bother exploring. The Ayia Napa Sculpture Park, an open-air gallery of over two hundred contemporary sculptures set on a hill overlooking the sea, is completely free and rarely busy, even in peak season. The monastery in the town centre, dating back to the 1400s when the Venetians ruled Cyprus, was originally hidden away in pine forest and still has a genuinely peaceful courtyard despite sitting metres from the main strip. For beaches without the crowds, Makronissos has a gently sloping seafloor, fewer sunbeds than anywhere else nearby, and a microclimate that runs slightly warmer than the rest of the coast. Cape Greco National Park, a short drive away, has dramatic sea caves and clifftop trails worth a full morning, and Blue Lagoon boat trips that stop along this coastline are some of the best-value excursions in the resort."

• Weather - Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures around 28-33°C and barely a cloud. The sea stays swimmable from May right through to November, and even winter sits around 14-18°C with plenty of sunshine.

• Money - Cyprus uses the euro, so no currency fuss. A meal out costs around €12-€18, a beer is €3-€4, and a cocktail on the strip runs €6-€8. Noticeably cheaper than the Greek islands for eating and drinking out.

• Fun Fact - Ayia Napa was a quiet fishing village until the 1980s, when it accidentally became a party destination after the Turkish invasion of 1974 cut off Varosha (the previous tourist hotspot in northern Cyprus).
