Limassol is Cyprus with everything switched on. The beach city where Richard the Lionheart got married in 1191, the Romans built a proper theatre you can still watch plays in, the Knights Hospitaller guarded the wine country, and today a superyacht marina sits next to a 14th-century castle. It's the island's biggest resort and still its most interesting.
✨ Highlights of your Holidays to Limassol
🏰 Limassol Castle and the Medieval Museum, the 14th-century fortress in the Old Town where Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191 during the Third Crusade. Now houses the Cyprus Medieval Museum with armour, tombstones and Byzantine-era finds
🏛️ Ancient Kourion (Curium), 15 minutes west of the city, one of the Mediterranean's most dramatically located Roman sites, a 3,500-seat Greco-Roman theatre still used for summer performances, plus Roman villas with intact floor mosaics overlooking the sea from cliff-top ruins
⚓ Limassol Marina, Cyprus's first superyacht marina and a proper grown-up evening destination, waterfront restaurants, designer boutiques, the glass-fronted residential towers, and the most Instagrammed sunset in Cyprus
🍷 The Commandaria wine region, the hills behind Limassol produce the world's oldest named wine (still in production), Kolossi Castle (15th-century Crusader fort) sits at the edge of the vineyards and several village wineries offer tastings. The Cyprus Wine Festival hits Limassol every September
🏖️ Lady's Mile Beach, 7km of sandy coast southwest of the city toward Akrotiri, properly wide, shallow shelving, and so long you'll always find a quiet stretch even in August. The Limassol beach headline
📌 Good to Know
☀️ Cyprus gets 340+ days of sunshine a year and Limassol is properly year-round, 28-32°C in peak summer (June to September), warm 22-26°C shoulder seasons (April/May and October), and even winter (December to March) stays at 15-19°C making it one of Europe's best winter-sun options
💷 Cyprus is solid value by Western European standards, a gyros runs €5-7, a mezze feast at a proper taverna is €20-25 per person, a pint of local Keo is €4, and a Cyprus coffee is €2-3. Hotels across the full range from £19pp deposits upward
🇬🇧 English is spoken everywhere, and it's not the tourist-phrasebook version. Cyprus was a British colony until 1960 and the island still drives on the left, serves proper pints, and the older generation genuinely grew up watching the BBC

🌍 Where to Stay in Limassol
Three main bases, each with its own feel.
👨👩👧 Families
Potamos Germasogeias / the tourist strip is the family headline with most of the big beachfront hotels (Mediterranean Beach, Royal Apollonia, Poseidonia Beach) and easy walks to restaurants and beach bars. Pissouri (25km west) is the quieter family alternative in a sheltered Blue Flag bay, smaller hotels, slower pace, properly relaxed. Amathus / eastern Limassol works for families wanting more space and quieter beaches, with Mediterranean Beach Hotel and Atlantica Bay the main family picks here.
💕 Couples
Limassol Marina and the Old Town is the grown-up base with boutique hotels, waterfront fine dining, the best of the town's nightlife, and walking distance to the Castle and Old Town tavernas. Potamos Germasogeias also works for couples with the luxury beachfront options (Londa, Four Seasons, Amathus Beach) that sit slightly set back from the main strip. Pissouri is the hideaway alternative for couples wanting zero noise and a Blue Flag bay to themselves.
👯 Groups
Central Limassol / the Old Town is the group nightlife base with walking-distance access to the marina bars, Old Town tavernas, and the main clubbing strip. Potamos Germasogeias works for beach-club-day-plus-bar-nights group holidays with large hotels like GrandResort Limassol, Holiday Inn and Atlantica Bay. Carnival in February/March pulls groups into central Limassol for the 10-day street party.
🏛️ Must See, Must Do
Limassol gives you proper beaches PLUS proper history PLUS wine country, which is rare in Cyprus resort terms. Here's the highlights reel.
🏰 Limassol Castle and the Cyprus Medieval Museum, the 14th-century fortress in the Old Town, King Richard the Lionheart got married here in 1191 during the Third Crusade, and today it houses the medieval museum with armour, weapons and Byzantine finds across three floors
🏛️ Ancient Kourion (Curium), 15 minutes west of the city, one of the Mediterranean's most spectacularly sited Roman ruins, 3,500-seat Greco-Roman theatre still used for summer performances, plus a Roman villa with intact floor mosaics overlooking the sea from a 100m cliff
🏖️ Lady's Mile Beach, 7km of sandy coast southwest toward the Akrotiri Salt Lake, wide and shallow with multiple beach bars running the length, the local beach headline
⚓ Limassol Marina, the superyacht marina and luxury waterfront, glass towers reflecting the sea, designer shopping, proper harbour-side restaurants, and the most Instagrammed Cyprus sunset. Free to walk around, paid to dine
⚔️ Kolossi Castle and the Commandaria wine region, the 15th-century Crusader fort 10km west, originally Knights Hospitaller HQ and centre of the medieval sugar and wine trade. The surrounding vineyards produce Commandaria, the world's oldest named wine still in production
🌅 Molos Seafront Park, the 2km landscaped seafront promenade running east from the Old Town, tree-lined walkways, sculpture pieces, kids' playgrounds, and a proper evening stroll spot for the whole family
⛰️ Governor's Beach, 30km east toward Larnaca, dramatic black sand against white chalk cliffs, multiple beach tavernas serving grilled fish with the cliffs as the backdrop
🛍️ Limassol Old Town and Anexartisias street, the pedestrianised commercial heart of the old city, market stalls and jewellery shops, leather goods and traditional Cypriot produce, plus a string of proper backstreet tavernas away from the tourist strip
🗣️ Local Lingo
Greek (specifically Cypriot Greek dialect) is the official language, but English is spoken fluently across the board thanks to Cyprus's British colonial history. A few Greek phrases still go down well:
👋 Ya sas (Γεια σας), Hello (polite)
🙏 Efharisto (Ευχαριστώ), Thank you
💰 Ton logariasmo (Τον λογαριασμό), The bill please
🧀 Halloumi, parakalo (Χαλούμι, παρακαλώ), Halloumi please (non-negotiable)
🥂 Yamas (Γειά μας), Cheers! (the essential taverna phrase)

As you would expect with Cyprus holidays, the weather is superb all year round. For sun worshippers, holidays to Limassol are best in the summer, but bear in mind the beaches will be busy in the peak season so make sure you grab your sunbed early! Temperatures range from the high 20s to over 30s in the summer months, and even in the winter it is not unusual for the temperatures to reach the high 20s.

FAQs
How do I get to Limassol from the UK?
How do I get to Limassol from the UK?
Fly direct to Larnaca International Airport (LCA) or Paphos International Airport (PFO), both handle UK flights and both are around 45-50 minutes from Limassol by road. easyJet, Jet2, British Airways, Wizz Air and Ryanair all run regular direct flights from multiple UK airports year-round.
Is Limassol good for families?
Is Limassol good for families?
Yes, properly. The beaches (especially Lady's Mile) are long and shallow, Fasouri Watermania waterpark is a proper family day out, Limassol Zoo in the Municipal Gardens works for rainy days, and the Molos seafront promenade is flat pushchair-friendly walking with playgrounds along the way. Add that Cypriots famously welcome kids everywhere and English is spoken universally, and it's one of the easier European family holidays on the market.
What's the nightlife like in Limassol?
What's the nightlife like in Limassol?
Different from Ayia Napa and that's the point. Limassol's nightlife is more grown-up and more varied. Limassol Marina is the polished waterfront-cocktails scene, Ayiou Andreou street and Saripolou Square in the Old Town are proper Cypriot bars and live-music venues with tavernas running until 1-2am, and the main tourist strip (Potamos Germasogeias) has the bigger bars and clubs. It's less "18-to-30 club strip" than Ayia Napa, more "full range from marina cocktails to backstreet taverna to proper club." Carnival season (Feb/March) cranks everything up to a different level for 10 days.
Can I visit ancient Curium and the wine region from Limassol?
Can I visit ancient Curium and the wine region from Limassol?
Yes, both are proper day trips from Limassol. Ancient Kourion (Curium) is 15 minutes west of the city by car, the Greco-Roman theatre and cliff-top Roman villas are the headline sights and you'll need 2-3 hours. Kolossi Castle (Crusader fort) is 10km west and combines brilliantly with Kourion. The Commandaria wine region is the hill country behind Kolossi, several wineries offer tastings (Tsiakkas, Kyperounda, Zambartas) and organised half-day or full-day wine tours leave from central Limassol regularly.
