Bavaro is the Goldilocks of Dominican destinations - not as busy as Punta Cana, not as quiet as Uvero Alto, and with plantain porridge at the exact right temperature and with extremely comfortable beds (though, to be fair, that's true of all the hotels in the DR!) Bavaro is technically part of the greater Punta Cana area, but it's got its own distinct personality that's won over millions of visitors who keep coming back year after year.
✨ Highlights of your Holidays to Bavaro
🏝️ One of the World's Most Photographed Beaches. Bavaro Beach stretches for miles of powder-soft white sand and impossibly turquoise water. The colour genuinely doesn't look real until you're standing in it. Even when the resorts are fully booked, the beach is long enough that you can always find your own quiet stretch.
🐠 Reef-Protected Calm Water. An offshore coral reef breaks the Atlantic swell before it hits the shore, so the water stays calm and shallow for ages. It's why Bavaro is a brilliant pick for families with little kids, nervous swimmers, and anyone who wants to actually swim rather than get knocked about.
🏨 All-Inclusive on Serious Scale. Bavaro is one of the biggest all-inclusive bases in the Caribbean. Five-star mega-resorts with eight or more restaurants, multiple swimming pools, on-site waterparks, kids' clubs, theatres, casinos and beach clubs are the norm here, not the exception.
🍤 Proper Dominican Food and Drink. Beyond the resort buffets, the local food scene is brilliant: fresh-grilled mahi-mahi and red snapper at El Cortecito beach shacks, mofongo (mashed plantain stuffed with garlic and pork crackling), rice and beans, and the famous Dominican mamajuana drink (rum infused with herbs and tree bark, said to cure everything).
💰 Long-Haul Caribbean for Less. Compared to Barbados, the Bahamas or St Lucia, Bavaro all-inclusive packages come in at properly competitive prices. You're getting the same Caribbean beach quality, often the same calibre of resort, for noticeably less.
📌 Good to Know – Bavaro Holidays
☀️ Year-round 28-30°C tropical warmth. The Dominican Republic sits in the Caribbean tropics so it's warm and sunny basically all year.
💰 The currency is the Dominican Peso (DOP, RD$) but US Dollars work everywhere. A beer at an El Cortecito beach bar is around £2 to £4, a fresh-grilled fish dinner £10 to £20, a taxi to the airport £20 to £30, and a souvenir bottle of mamajuana around £8.
🗣️ Spanish is the official language. Resort staff almost universally speak good English (it's a tourism economy), but a few Spanish words go a long way with local vendors, taxi drivers and at El Cortecito's beach restaurants.

🏖️ Best Beaches in Bavaro
🌴 Playa Bavaro. The headliner. Miles of powder-soft white sand, impossibly turquoise water, and the offshore coral reef keeping the swell down. Most of the big resorts back directly onto it but the public stretches between them are easy to access on foot. One of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean and it earns the reputation.
🐟 Playa El Cortecito. The fishing village beach in the middle of the Bavaro coastline, where local boats pull up with the day's catch and the beach shacks grill mahi-mahi and red snapper for properly local prices. Less polished than the resort beaches but with the most authentic Dominican vibe and the best off-resort food.
🌅 Playa Macao. Around 20 minutes north of Bavaro proper, this is where the locals come on weekends. Wilder, more rugged, with bigger surf for boogie-boarding and a row of beach shacks doing fresh-grilled fish lunches. Worth the taxi for a day trip.
🏝️ Playa Arena Gorda. The northern stretch of the Bavaro coastline, where some of the larger Riu resorts sit. Quieter than central Bavaro Beach, with the same powder-white sand and reef-calm water. Brilliant for a longer beach walk.
⛱️ Playa Juanillo. Down in Cap Cana to the south, around 25 minutes from Bavaro by taxi. A more upmarket stretch of beach with a swankier scene (Cap Cana is the luxury enclave of the Punta Cana area) and properly clear water. Worth the day trip for variety.
📍 Where to Stay on Your Bavaro Holidays
👨👩👧👦 Families
The central Playa Bavaro stretch is the best family base. The big family-focused resorts (Barceló Bávaro Palace Deluxe, Bahia Principe Grand Bavaro, Lopesan Costa Bavaro) all back directly onto the calmest reef-protected swimming water, have kids' clubs covering most age ranges, and put you within walking distance of El Cortecito village for easy lunches off-resort. Northern Playa Arena Gorda is the slightly quieter family alternative if you want a bit more space and don't mind the resort being a five-minute walk to the more polished beach stretches.
💑 Couples
For couples, the adults-only resorts on Playa Bavaro and Arena Gorda (Riu Palace Bavaro, Riu Republica, JOIA Bavaro by Iberostar, Bavaro Princess) give you the resort experience without the kids' club energy. If you want romance with the wider Punta Cana area's swankier scene, Cap Cana further south delivers Playa Juanillo and the upmarket marina, around 25 minutes by taxi from central Bavaro. Uvero Alto further north is even quieter for proper seclusion.
🎉 Groups
The bigger five-star resorts on central Playa Bavaro work brilliantly for groups (Lopesan Costa Bavaro, Barceló Bávaro Palace, Bahia Principe Grand Bavaro) because they have enough restaurants, bars and pool areas that everyone in the group can do their own thing during the day and meet up for dinner. The adults-only Riu Republica on Playa Arena Gorda is the pick for groups without kids who want the lively all-inclusive party energy. Stay central and you can also walk to El Cortecito for the off-resort beach bar nights.
🗣️ Local Lingo for Your Bavaro Holidays
Spanish is the official language and Dominican Spanish drops a lot of consonants, "buenos días" sounds more like "buenoh dia." Resort staff speak good English but even just speaking a few words make a difference especially with vendors and at the village beach restaurants.
👋 Hola (OH-lah), Hi / Hello. The universal greeting, works everywhere.
🙏 Gracias (GRAH-syas), Thank you. Drop it constantly, the Dominicans are warm and appreciate the effort.
🍻 Salud (sah-LOOD), Cheers / To your health. For every cocktail, mamajuana shot or Presidente beer raised in company.
🍤 ¿Qué hay para comer? (KEH eye PAH-rah ko-MAIR), What's there to eat? Useful at the beach shacks where the menu is whatever's been caught that morning.
🌴 ¡Que chulo! (KEH CHOO-lo), How cool! / Awesome! A Dominican slang favourite. Use it about anything you like and you'll get a smile.
🗺️ Holidays to Bavaro – Travel Guide 2026 / 2027
👨👩👧👦 Families
🐠 Snorkelling Right Off the Beach. The offshore coral reef means you can snorkel straight from the sand with the kids and see tropical fish, parrotfish and (if you're lucky) sea turtles. Most resorts have free snorkel gear or you can hire it for a few dollars at El Cortecito.
🏝️ Saona Island Day Trip. The classic Dominican family day out: a catamaran or speedboat to the protected Saona Island, with shallow turquoise lagoons (la Piscina Natural), starfish in waist-deep water, and a Dominican lunch on the beach. Bookable through any resort tour desk.
🎢 Resort Waterpark Day. Pirates Island at Barceló (extra charge), the Riu Splash Water World (free for guests of any Riu) and Lopesan Costa Bavaro's six-attraction waterpark all give you a proper pool-and-slides day without leaving the resort.
🐬 Dolphin Island Park. Excursion just down the coast where you can swim with dolphins and meet sea lions. Properly memorable for kids though it costs extra on top of the resort package. Book through the resort or a local tour desk.
💑 Couples
🌅 Sunset Stroll on Bavaro Beach. The miles-long beach is at its most magical at sunset, with the sky turning pink and orange over the palm-fringed shore. Walk to El Cortecito for sundowner cocktails at a beach bar with your toes in the sand.
🏌️ Round of Golf. The Punta Cana/Bavaro area has some of the best golf courses in the Caribbean, including the famous Punta Espada and Corales courses. JOIA Bavaro and Lopesan Costa Bavaro have golf courses attached.
🍹 Mamajuana Tasting. The famous Dominican drink: rum infused with herbs, tree bark and red wine, said to cure everything from colds to lack of romance. Most beach bars and resort lobby bars have it. Properly Dominican and properly memorable.
💆 Spa Treatment for Two. Most Bavaro resort spas do couples' massage packages with side-by-side beds, often in beachside cabanas. Renova Spa (in the Riu resorts) and the JOIA spa both have strong reputations.
🎉 Groups
🛥️ Catamaran Party Cruise. Group-friendly day out: a catamaran along the Bavaro coastline with snorkelling stops, an open bar and music. Most resorts can book you on one or you can sort it through a local tour desk for less.
🥃 El Cortecito Beach Bar Night. Walk down to the fishing village beach at sunset for sundowner cocktails at the beach shacks, fresh-grilled fish dinner, and an evening of mojitos, mamajuana and merengue. The most local night you can have without leaving the immediate area.
🐎 Beach Horseback Riding. Group canter along the long Bavaro Beach at sunrise or sunset, often with a stop at a fresh coconut stand. The kind of group activity that ends up in everyone's holiday photos.
🎰 On-Site Casino Night. Several of the big Bavaro resorts (Lopesan Costa Bavaro, Barceló Bávaro Palace, Hilton further afield) have on-site casinos. Set a budget, dress up a bit, and let the group try their luck for an evening.

FAQs
How do I get to Bavaro?
How do I get to Bavaro?
Direct flights from UK & Ireland airports to Punta Cana International Airport take around 9 hours. From the airport, Bavaro is around 17-28 km depending on which resort you're at, with transfers taking 25-45 minutes.
Is all-inclusive worth it in Bavaro?
Is all-inclusive worth it in Bavaro?
For most travellers, yes, properly so. The big Bavaro resorts are designed around the all-inclusive model, with multiple restaurants (often eight or more), unlimited drinks, all-day snacks, kids' clubs included, and entertainment programmes already in the price. Eating off-resort in the immediate area is limited, so an all-inclusive package generally works out better value than going room-only. The exception is if you specifically want to explore the wider Punta Cana area's restaurant scene, in which case half board might suit you better.
What's the food scene like beyond the buffet?
What's the food scene like beyond the buffet?
Better than most all-inclusive destinations, if you make the effort to leave the resort. El Cortecito village in central Bavaro has beach shacks grilling the day's catch (mahi-mahi, red snapper, lobster) for properly local prices. Try Captain Cook for fresh seafood right on the sand. Mofongo (mashed plantain stuffed with garlic and pork crackling), arroz con habichuelas (rice and beans) and sancocho (Dominican stew) are the dishes worth seeking out. Wash it down with a Presidente beer (the local lager) or mamajuana (rum infused with herbs and tree bark).
When's the best time to visit Bavaro?
When's the best time to visit Bavaro?
Bavaro is a year-round destination with the temperature staying at 28-30°C basically all twelve months. The dry season (December to April) brings the most reliable sunshine, the lowest humidity and is peak season for UK winter sun travellers. May to November is the wet season, with brief tropical showers (often clearing in 30 minutes), warm sea, and the Caribbean at its lushest and greenest. Hurricane season runs June to November with August and September the highest-risk months, it's worth checking weather forecasts for those weeks if you're booking late.
