🗓 When to Visit Granada
April, May, June (Perfect spring season) - This is absolutely brilliant timing for Granada! Temperatures hit lovely 18-28°C, perfect for exploring the Alhambra without melting. Spring flowers are in full bloom at the Generalife gardens - they're absolutely stunning this time of year. The city hosts major cultural events like Granada's International Festival of Music and Dance. You get gorgeous weather for sightseeing, tapas crawls, and day trips without the extreme summer heat. Book Alhambra tickets well ahead though - spring's popular! Ideal balance of weather and atmosphere.
September, October (Peak season excellence) - Surprisingly, this is actually Granada's busiest time and there's good reason! Temperatures drop to comfortable 20-28°C after the scorching summer, perfect for wandering cobbled streets and exploring monuments. The Generalife gardens are still lovely, and you get warm days with cooler evenings - brilliant for those legendary tapas crawls! September-October sees the highest tourist numbers, so book Alhambra tickets months ahead. Hotels pricier than spring but the weather's absolutely spot-on. Great time for combining Granada with Costa del Sol beaches (90 minutes away).
July, August (Hot summer months) - Here's the thing about Granada in summer - it gets properly hot! We're talking 35-40°C (95-104°F) regularly. The city's at 738m altitude but surrounded by mountains, so heat gets trapped. Locals escape to the coast, meaning the city's actually quieter and hotels cheaper. If you can handle the heat, you'll have shorter queues at the Alhambra and better restaurant availability. Visit monuments early morning or late afternoon, spend midday in air-conditioned museums or Arab baths. Not ideal for everyone, but bargain hunters who love the heat will be delighted.
March, November (Shoulder months with character) - Transitional months with mixed weather. March brings spring blooms and temperatures around 15-20°C, though occasional rain possible. November's cooler (12-18°C) as autumn fades. Fewer tourists mean you can actually enjoy the Alhambra and Albaicín without crowds. Hotels offer brilliant rates. March has Holy Week celebrations - absolutely spectacular processions if you time it right. November's quieter but still pleasant for sightseeing. Good for budget-conscious travellers who don't mind cooler weather or occasional showers.
December, January, February (Winter with skiing bonus) - Granada gets proper cold in winter! Temperatures drop to 2-12°C, sometimes below freezing at night due to proximity to Sierra Nevada mountains. However, this opens brilliant opportunities - you can ski Europe's southernmost ski resort in the morning and explore the Alhambra in the afternoon! The city looks magical with snow-capped mountains backdrop. Christmas markets, festive lights, and Three Kings parade (January 5th) add special atmosphere. Lowest hotel prices all year. Perfect for ski enthusiasts or those wanting Granada without crowds, but pack warm layers!

FAQs
Do I need to book the Alhambra in advance?
Do I need to book the Alhambra in advance?
Absolutely YES! The Alhambra limits daily visitors and sells out weeks (sometimes months) ahead, especially spring and autumn. Book your timed entry slot as soon as you know your travel dates - seriously, don't leave this to chance! Only 300 people can visit the Nasrid Palaces per half hour. You can book up to 3 months ahead on the official Alhambra website. If it's sold out, some hotels and tour companies hold allocations, but you'll pay premium prices.

Not compared to Barcelona or Madrid! Granada's brilliantly affordable - one of the cheapest major Spanish cities. The legendary free tapas culture means every drink comes with food, so you can eat cheaply by bar-hopping. A beer or wine costs around £2-3 (€2.50-3.50) and includes a proper plate of food. Restaurants outside touristy areas are very reasonable. Hotels offer excellent value. The Alhambra ticket's around £15-20 (€18-24). Budget travellers love Granada!

Minimum 2 full days, ideally 3-4. Day one for the Alhambra (needs half a day minimum), day two for Albaicín quarter, cathedral, and Royal Chapel. Day three lets you explore Sacromonte's cave houses and catch a flamenco show. Day four's perfect for Sierra Nevada hiking or day-tripping to Costa del Sol beaches. The city's compact and walkable, but there's loads to see. Most people find 3 days hits the sweet spot.
Can you do Granada as a day trip?
Can you do Granada as a day trip?
You can, but honestly we wouldn't recommend it! The Alhambra alone deserves 3-4 hours minimum. Add the Albaicín quarter, cathedral, and tapas time, you've barely scratched the surface. Granada's magic happens at sunset from Mirador de San Nicolás, followed by evening tapas crawls. Flamenco shows are evening events. The city rewards staying overnight - the atmosphere transforms after dark. If you're limited, at least do an overnight - you'll thank yourself!
How far is Granada from the beach?
How far is Granada from the beach?
About 70-80km to Costa del Sol beaches - roughly 1-1.5 hours' drive depending on traffic. Popular spots like Nerja, Almuñécar, and Salobreña are all accessible for day trips. Málaga is 130km (1.5 hours). Many visitors combine Granada city break with Costa del Sol beach time - brilliant combination! You get culture, history, mountains, AND Mediterranean beaches all in one holiday. Easy bus connections or hire a car for flexibility.
What's Granada's free tapas culture?
What's Granada's free tapas culture?
One of Granada's best traditions! Unlike most of Spain, Granada still honours the original tapas custom - every alcoholic drink you order comes with FREE food. Not just olives or crisps, but proper dishes - tortilla, croquetas, grilled meats, seafood. Order another drink, get another different tapa. Bar-hopping for dinner is local culture. Head to Calle Navas for classic experience, or Realejo neighbourhood for more generous portions. It's not a tourist gimmick - locals do this nightly. Absolute foodie paradise and brilliant value!
