Jūrmala is the Baltic beach answer to a city break. A 33-kilometre strip of soft white sand backed by pine forest, Art Nouveau wooden villas and a mineral-spring spa heritage that's been pulling Russian tsars for over 150 years. Six neighbourhoods strung along the coast, all reachable by train from Riga in 25 minutes for a few quid, so it works equally as a day trip from the capital, or beach break in it's own right.

✨ Highlights

  • 🏖️ 33km of white-sand Baltic beach: flat, soft and properly clean, with Blue Flag swimming sites and a flat shoreline that's safe for the kids and good for long barefoot walks.

  • 🌲 Pine-forest spa town: the Baltic answer to Baden-Baden, with mineral springs at Kemeri, sulphur waters and the country's deepest spa heritage. Treatments cost about a third of UK prices.

  • 🎶 Dzintari Concert Hall: an open-air timber amphitheatre tucked into pine woods, hosting world-class summer programming from Latvian soprano Kristīne Opolais to the international Ballet Stars in Jūrmala festival.

  • 🏛️ Wooden villa quarter: 103 architectural monuments of national significance, ornate carved verandas, glazed balconies and turret-topped 19th-century summer houses across Majori, Bulduri and Dubulti.

  • 💦 Līvu Akvaparks: the biggest waterpark in Northern Europe, 20+ slides, 10 pools and a spa zone, properly good year-round and a guaranteed family rainy-day fix.

  • 🌿 Kemeri National Park: the raised bog boardwalk west of town is otherworldly Baltic wilderness, brilliant for birdwatching and a proper change of pace from the seafront.

💡 Good to Know

☀️ Weather: summer (June to August) hits 21-24°C with long Baltic evenings stretching past 10pm and sea temperatures around 18-20°C, refreshing rather than warm, but swimmable. Winter is properly cold at -1 to 2°C with regular snow.

💶 Money: Latvia's on the Euro (€), but in sterling: a coffee is £2.50, a pint £3 to £5, a sit-down meal £10 to £18, an hour-long massage £40 to £60. Spa treatments come in cheaper than the rest of Europe.

🐢 Fun fact: the bronze turtle sculpture at the end of Tirgoņu Street, Brunurupucis, has been watching over Majori Beach since 1995 and somehow ended up the most photographed thing in town. Tradition is to pose next to it (or, if you're brave, sit on it). It symbolises longevity.

🏨 Top Hotels in Jumala

Semarah Hotel Lielupe a proper family resort spread through the Bulduri pine forest with a 25-metre indoor pool, Finnish sauna, Turkish steam bath, modern Kids Club and a full Wellness Centre doing massages and spa treatments at Latvian rather than Western European prices. Strong guest reviews too.

Rixwell collection Seaside Hotel is a smaller, elegant, four star resort, walking distance from the beach. It offers a gym and tranquil surroundings, perfect for a properly relaxing break.

🏖️ Best Beaches

Jūrmala's beach is one continuous 33-kilometre strip of soft white sand backed by dunes and pine forest, but it splits into named sections by neighbourhood, each with its own character.

🌅 Majori Beach, the central stretch and the most active. The wooden boardwalk, the bronze turtle, the beach sports centre at the end of Kaiju Street (volleyball, football, handball courts), summer beach bars and the iconic JURMALA letters at the end of Tirgoņu Street. Sun-loungers, foot-washing taps, lifeguards and accessible ramps. The classic Jūrmala beach day.

🎶 Dzintari Beach, quieter and more cultural, a short walk from the concert hall. Open-air art exhibitions in summer, the Sunrise Concert at 4:30am on 12 July 2026 when organist Iveta Apkalna plays as the sun comes up over the Baltic, and the easiest beach for combining sand with a Dzintari Forest Park afternoon.

🌲 Bulduri Beach, the western, family-quiet stretch where Semarah Hotel Lielupe sits. Wide, calm, less crowded, backed by pine. The pick if you're travelling with small kids or want sea-and-snooze rather than seafront bustle.

🦢 Dubulti and Jaunkemeri, the further-west stretches towards Kemeri National Park. Quieter still, popular with kite-surfers when the wind comes up, and the most likely beaches to have entirely to yourself outside high summer.

The water itself is Baltic, clean, shallow-shelving, and warmer than people expect (18-20°C in July and August). Properly swimmable in summer. Even in winter, the snow-covered beach with frozen sea-edge is its own particular kind of beautiful, and the locals walk it daily. Smoking, pets, overnight stays and camping aren't allowed on the beaches.

🗣️ Local Lingo

Latvian is the official language, but Russian is widely spoken too (Jūrmala has a strong Russian-speaking population dating back to the Soviet resort era). English is fine in hotels and most Majori restaurants and cafes, less reliable in older spas or family-run bakeries. A few Latvian phrases go a long way and locals warm up immediately if you have a go.

  • 🙋 Sveiki, SVAY-ki, Hello (informal, friendly)

  • 🙏 Labdien, LAHB-dyen, Good day (formal, polite, the one for shops and restaurants)

  • 🙌 Paldies, PAHL-dyes, Thank you (use it constantly)

  • 🍻 Priekā, PREE-eh-ka, Cheers / To your health (essential for any drink raised in company, including the obligatory Black Balsam shot)

  • 😋 Garšīgi, GAR-shee-gi, Tasty / Delicious (useful for the smoked-fish stand on Jomas iela and any traditional Latvian meal)

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families

  • 💦 Līvu Akvaparks day: the biggest indoor waterpark in Northern Europe, 20+ slides, 10 pools, a kids' splash zone and a spa wing for the parents. Properly worth a full day, and a guaranteed rainy-day fix outside summer.

  • 🌲 Dzintari Forest Park climb: the 33.5m wooden observation tower at the heart of the pine forest gives panoramic views over the Baltic and the dunes. Free entry, plus playgrounds for all ages, a skatepark, roller-skating paths and a streetball court below. Properly easy half-day with kids.

  • 🐢 Brunurupucis the Turtle and Jomas iela: the bronze turtle at the end of Tirgoņu Street is the obvious selfie stop. Combine with an ice-cream wander down Jomas iela's 1km pedestrian street, where buskers, street sculptures and small galleries make for an easy slow afternoon.

  • 🌿 Kemeri Bog Boardwalk: the raised wooden trail across the sulphur bog at Kemeri National Park is genuinely otherworldly and a proper change of pace from the seafront. About 30 minutes by train from Majori, free entry, easy walking even with younger kids. Bring binoculars for the birdlife.

💑 Couples

  • 🌅 Sunrise Concert at Dzintari Beach (12 July 2026, 4:30am): organist Iveta Apkalna playing on the sand as the sun comes up over the Baltic. One of the most genuinely romantic ticketed events in the Baltic calendar. Part of the Jūrmala Festival.

  • ♨️ Spa-and-massage afternoon: Jūrmala is built on its mineral springs and 19th-century spa heritage, and a treatment menu here goes deeper than your average hotel spa.

  • 🌳 Wooden villa walk through Bulduri and Majori: the 19th and early 20th-century summer villas with carved verandas and turret-topped towers run through the side streets behind the beach. The Jūras iela stretch is the prettiest. Free, slow, and properly atmospheric on a sunny afternoon.

  • 🍷 Dinner at Light House Jūrmala (1a Gulbenes Street): the ship-shaped building right in the beach sand at Dzintari does Mediterranean and grilled seafood with proper Baltic Sea views.

🎉 Groups

  • 🎵 Laima Rendezvous Jūrmala 2026 (Dzintari Concert Hall, 24-26 July 2026): the international summer music festival pulls headline pop, classical and crossover acts to Jūrmala for three nights.

  • 🎭 Ballet Stars in Jūrmala (Dzintari Concert Hall, 2 August 2026): the 26th International Ballet Festival, soloists from Vienna State Opera, Teatro alla Scala, the Hamburg Ballet and the Latvian National Ballet. Proper culture-trip night out for a group up for something different.

  • 🚲 Cycle the seafront promenade: the flat coastal cycle path runs the full 33km of Jūrmala from Lielupe through Bulduri, Dzintari, Majori, Dubulti and out towards Kemeri.

  • 🎰 Olympic Casino Riga night out: Jūrmala itself is genuinely quiet after dark (the resort is built around spa wellness, not nightlife), so for a proper big group night, hop the train back to Riga. 25 minutes, runs late, drops you in the middle of the Old Town's bar and club scene at Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs, Skyline Bar and Coyote Fly.
