The Vatican area is one of the best places to base yourself in Rome. You're right next to the Vatican Museums and St Peter's Basilica (obviously), but you're also in the Prati neighbourhood, which is one of Rome's most elegant residential districts. It's quieter and less touristy than the centro storico, with tree-lined streets, proper local restaurants and brilliant shopping along Via Cola di Rienzo. The Ottaviano and Lepanto metro stops connect you to the rest of Rome in minutes.
This page covers the Vatican area of Rome - the Prati district and surroundings within walking distance of Vatican City. For the full guide to Rome holidays, head to our main Rome holidays page.
📌 Good to Know for your Holidays to Vatican City
🎨 Book Vatican Museums tickets online - Standard adult entry is €20 (plus €5 online booking fee). Tickets open 60 days in advance and sell out weeks ahead in summer. Skip-the-line is worth every cent - queues can hit 2-3 hours in peak season.
⛪ St Peter's Basilica is free - No ticket needed, just a security queue. The dome climb costs €8 (stairs) or €10 (lift + stairs) and the views are spectacular.
🚇 Well connected - Ottaviano metro (Line A) is the main stop for the Vatican, with Cipro and Lepanto also nearby. Line A connects directly to the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain area and Termini station.
🏨 Where to Stay in the Vatican Area
The Vatican area sits in Rome's Prati district, one of the city's smartest neighbourhoods. Hotels here tend to be modern, well-kept and quieter than those in the chaotic centro storico, with easy metro access to the rest of Rome.

Is the Sistine Chapel included in the Vatican Museums ticket?
Yes. Your Vatican Museums entry ticket includes access to the Sistine Chapel, which is at the end of the museum route. No separate ticket needed. Note: restoration work on Michelangelo's Last Judgment has been underway since January 2026, so scaffolding may partially obstruct the wall, but the chapel remains open.
Is the Vatican area safe?
Is the Vatican area safe?
Very. Prati is one of Rome's most affluent residential neighbourhoods. It feels noticeably calmer and more spacious than areas around Termini or the centro storico. The usual big-city common sense applies (watch your bag, ignore street hawkers near the Vatican walls), but it's a very comfortable area to stay in.
