One of the oldest cities in the world, Jerusalem’s ancient wonders and vibrant modern culture make it the perfect place to experience two destinations in one. Less than an hour’s hop from Tel Aviv airport, the city’s unique attractions and spectacular history combine to create the ultimate short break, ideal for couples, families and friends alike.
Beaches
Nestled inland between the Mediterranean and Dead Sea, Jerusalem doesn’t quite have beaches on its doorstep. However, if you fancy some sand between your toes, heading to the coast couldn’t be easier, with a brand new high-speed rail route soon to serve Tel Aviv’s gorgeous golden beaches.
Top tip
For a taste of the seaside without leaving the city, check out the awesome new Israel Aquarium. Set to debut in autumn 2017, this family-friendly attraction is home to ten interactive exhibitions, including a huge walk-through shark tank, a stingray feeding pool and a mesmerising jellyfish gallery.
Food & Drink
Cosy home cooking and speedy street food are firm favourites with Jerusalemites, from indulgent ‘kubbeh’ dumpling soups, to crispy falafel wraps bursting with silky hummus. ‘Ice-café’, a coffee-based frozen drink, is also hugely popular, with its sweet, milky taste on offer around every corner.
Culture
Cultural events take centre-stage across the city’s calendar, from the Shaon Horef Festival’s melting pot of music, dance, theatre and art, to the multi-sensory Abu Gosh Vocal Music experience, and the annual Jewish Film Festival. Plus, the spellbinding Festival of Lights, held every summer, welcomes artists from across the globe to splash the whole city with colour.
Nightlife
Jerusalem’s nightlife scene is constantly on the move, with diverse music venues and cosy wine bars popping up right across the city. The Machane Yehuda Market’s evening tasting tour is a real highlight, taking in the neighbourhood’s hottest after-dark spots - or if clubbing is more your scene, head to the steampunk-inspired Justice, famed for its urban beats and eclectic railway station locale.
