Lassi is Kefalonia's main beach resort – a lovely stretch of coast just a few kilometres from Argostoli with some brilliant sandy beaches and a great selection of hotels, restaurants, and bars.

Destination Highlights

  • Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos – Two of the best beaches in the Ionian Islands, side by side. Golden sand, clear shallow water, organised sunbeds, and the kind of turquoise you don't believe until you're standing in it.

  • Five Minutes from Argostoli – The island capital is a short taxi ride or a pleasant walk along the coast. Harbour-front tavernas, the De Bosset Bridge with its resident loggerhead turtles, and the best shopping on Kefalonia.

  • Saint Theodore Lighthouse – The walk out to the lighthouse on the Fanari peninsula is one of the best sunset strolls on the island. Bring a camera and something cold to drink.

  • Watersports – Jet skis, parasailing, paddleboards, and banana boats are all available from the beach. The calm west-coast water makes it ideal for beginners.

  • Katavothres Sinkholes – A bizarre natural phenomenon where seawater disappears into underground tunnels, travels beneath the island, and re-emerges at Melissani Cave on the other side. Free to visit and genuinely fascinating.

Good to Know

☀️ Weather – Summers hit 30°C with long, dry days and a gentle Ionian breeze. Spring and autumn sit in the low to mid-20s, warm enough for swimming well into October.

💶 Money – A meal for two with wine at a Lassi taverna costs around €25–€40. A beer is €4–€5. Kefalonia is good value by Ionian standards, especially compared to Corfu.

🐢 Fun Fact – Loggerhead sea turtles swim right up to the De Bosset Bridge in Argostoli harbour, five minutes from Lassi. You can spot them from the bridge most mornings, no boat trip needed.

Beaches

Lassi's beaches are the main reason people come. The west coast catches the afternoon and evening sun, and the water is calm, clear, and warm from May through October.

  • Makris Gialos – The headline beach. A long stretch of golden sand with organised sunbeds, a beach bar, and watersports. The water is shallow and clear, and the sand is soft enough to sit on without a towel. Gets busy in peak season, but there's always room.

  • Platis Gialos – Right next to Makris Gialos, separated by a rocky headland. Equally beautiful and often slightly less crowded. Same golden sand, same clear water.

  • Paliostafida – A smaller, quieter beach tucked around the headland. No facilities, no crowds. Bring your own shade and a picnic.

  • Kalamia Beach – A pebbly cove between Lassi and Argostoli with calm, snorkelling-friendly water. Local rather than tourist.

  • White Rocks Beach – Below the White Rocks Hotel, with dramatic limestone cliffs and turquoise water. Photogenic and worth the scramble down.

Local Lingo

Greek is the language, and the Lassi strip is well set up for English speakers. But five minutes into Argostoli or further afield, a few words go a long way.

  • Yassas, YAH-sahs (Γειά σας), Hello / Goodbye (polite)

  • Efharisto, ef-hah-ree-STOH (Ευχαριστώ), Thank you

  • Parakalo, pah-rah-kah-LOH (Παρακαλώ), Please / You're welcome

  • Ena krasi, EH-nah krah-SEE (Ένα κρασί), A glass of wine

  • Opa!, OH-pah (Ώπα!), The Greek exclamation for celebration, surprise, or joy

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families

  • Makris Gialos Beach – The shallow, calm water and soft sand make it one of the best family beaches on the island. Sunbeds and watersports are right there, and the beach bar means nobody has to leave for lunch.

  • Argostoli harbour turtles – Walk into Argostoli and watch loggerhead sea turtles from the De Bosset Bridge. Free, easy, and kids remember it for years.

  • Melissani Cave – A boat trip through a half-collapsed underground lake where the midday sun turns the water electric blue. About 30 minutes via Sami, and one of the island's must-dos.

  • Katavothres sinkholes – Watch seawater disappear into underground tunnels right on the Fanari peninsula. Free to visit and genuinely weird enough to hold a child's attention.

💑 Couples

  • Sunset at Saint Theodore Lighthouse – Walk the coastal path out to the lighthouse on the Fanari peninsula as the sun goes down. The best sunset on the island.

  • Day trip to Fiskardo – The pastel-coloured Venetian harbour village on Kefalonia's northern tip, with waterfront restaurants, boutique shops, and quiet swimming coves.

  • Dinner at Phaedra – Tables overlooking the bay, slow-cooked Greek dishes, and the kind of evening where nobody checks the time. Established in 1997 and still one of the best meals on the island.

  • Robola wine tasting – Kefalonia's indigenous grape, grown on the slopes of Mount Aenos. A tasting afternoon at one of the island wineries is a proper lazy-day experience.

🎉 Groups

  • Beach day at Makris Gialos – Sunbeds, watersports, a beach bar, and enough space for the whole group. The sunset drinks afterwards are half the point.

  • Argostoli evening – Walk into the capital for cocktails on the harbour, dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants, and a wander through the pedestrianised streets. Livelier than Lassi's own strip.

  • Myrtos Beach – About 30 minutes north, the most photographed beach in the Ionians. White pebbles, turquoise water, and cliff-top viewpoints on the approach road.

  • Boat hire from Argostoli – Hire a small boat from the harbour and explore the west coast's coves and swimming spots at your own pace.

FAQs

Is Lassi good for families?

Lassi is the best family resort on Kefalonia. Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos have shallow, calm water, organised sunbeds, and watersports. The strip has restaurants, mini-markets, and ice cream shops, and Argostoli's harbour turtles are a five-minute taxi ride away.

When is best to visit Lassi?

Summer (June to September) is the main event: scorching days, warm seas, and the beach bars and restaurants at full tilt. Spring (May to June) is gorgeous for walking the Fanari peninsula and exploring the island without the peak heat. Autumn (September to October) keeps the sea warm and the pace slower, with tavernas still open and the sunset strip at its most relaxed.

What is the food like in Lassi?

Lassi has a strong run of tavernas along the main strip and near the beaches, with the best food coming from the places that have been there longest. The Kefalonian meat pie (kreatopita) is a rich pastry filled with spiced meat, rice, and tomato, and it's on most menus. Other highlights: moussaka, lamb kleftiko slow-cooked in parchment, fresh grilled sea bass, and the local Robola white wine. Phaedra is the standout, a family-run restaurant established in 1997 with tables overlooking the bay, consistently praised as one of the best meals on the island.

Is there nightlife in Lassi?

Lassi has relaxed bars, sunset drinks, and taverna evenings rather than a club scene. For something livelier, Argostoli is five minutes away with cocktail bars on the harbour and a handful of late-night spots. Kefalonia as a whole is not a nightlife island; the pace is relaxed by design.
