Lourdes is one of the world's most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites, set at the foot of the Pyrenees with mountain scenery and properly French food.

Highlights of your Holiday to Lourdes

  • Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes – Around six million visitors come every year to the Grotto of Massabielle, the basilicas, and the nightly candlelight processions.

  • Pyrenees on the doorstep – Mountain views from town and easy access to hiking trails, glacial lakes, and the Pic du Jer funicular for the full panorama.

  • Properly French food – Garbure stew, duck confit, Pyrenean cheeses, and bakery-fresh everything, a trip to France is never complete without a good trip to the bakery after all.

  • Old town and Château Fort – Cobbled streets, riverside cafés, and everything you need to stroll around pretending you're in an old film.

  • Spa towns and thermal baths nearby – Argelès-Gazost and Cauterets are both within day trip distance for pampering thermal spa days in the Pyrenees foothills.

Good to Know

☀️ Weather – Mild and green rather than scorchio: summer highs around 22°C, winters around 8°C, and proper rain at any time of year (this is the Pyrenees, not the Med). May to September is the warmest, driest window.

💶 Money – A sit-down lunch runs around €15–€20, a beer is €4–€5, and a coffee at a café is €2–€3.

🕯️ Fun Fact – The water at the Sanctuary spring has been flowing continuously since 1858, and the candlelight procession through the Sanctuary grounds happens every night from April to October. It's free, open to everyone, and worth seeing whether you're there for the faith or just the atmosphere.

FAQs

Is Lourdes good for non-religious visitors?

Yes, and a lot of visitors come for the Pyrenees scenery, the food, and the mountain walking rather than the pilgrimage itself. The Sanctuary is worth visiting regardless of faith. It's a remarkable space with no entry fee, no obligation to participate, and a quiet, dignified atmosphere. Pair it with the funicular, the Château Fort, the covered market, and a couple of day trips into the mountains, and you've got a proper Pyrenees holiday.

When are the busiest months in Lourdes?

The pilgrimage season runs from April through October, with peak intensity in mid-August around the Feast of the Assumption (15 August), when tens of thousands of pilgrims descend on the town for the national French pilgrimage. May, June, and September are also busy. If you want quieter streets, the shoulder months at either end of the season have their own appeal, and winter Lourdes is properly quiet, with reduced opening hours at some sites.

How do I get to Lourdes from the UK & Ireland?

Direct seasonal flights to Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport with Ryanair from London Stansted and Dublin, taking around 1 hour 55 minutes from London and 2 hours 10 minutes from Dublin.

What's the tipping etiquette?

Service is included in restaurant bills in France (you'll see "service compris" or it's covered by law), so tipping isn't expected. If service has been particularly good, leaving a couple of Euros or rounding up the bill is normal. Taxi drivers aren't tipped as standard but rounding up is appreciated. Hotel housekeeping €1 to €2 per day is a kind gesture but not obligatory.
