Bavaro

Bavaro is the Goldilocks of Dominican destinations - not as busy as Punta Cana, not as quiet as Uvero Alto, and with plantain porridge at the exact right temperature and with extremely comfortable beds (though, to be fair, that's true of all the hotels in the DR!) Bavaro is technically part of the greater Punta Cana area, but it's got its own distinct personality that's won over millions of visitors who keep coming back year after year.

The star attraction here is undoubtedly Bavaro Beach - and what a beauty it is! We're talking about one of the most photographed beaches in the entire Caribbean, with that perfect combination of powder-soft white sand and impossibly blue water that looks like it's been Photoshopped. The beach stretches for miles, so even when it's busy, you can always find your own little slice of paradise. Plus, the coral reef just offshore means the water stays lovely and calm - perfect for families with kids or if you're not the strongest swimmer.

What makes Bavaro brilliant is how it strikes that perfect balance between having loads to do and maintaining a relaxed, authentic Dominican vibe. You'll find local vendors selling fresh coconuts and handmade crafts right on the beach, but you're also just a short taxi ride from all the restaurants, bars, and attractions of Punta Cana when you fancy a change of scene.

The resort selection here is fantastic - you've got everything from sprawling family resorts with multiple pools, kids' clubs, and entertainment programs that'll keep everyone happy, to more intimate boutique properties where the staff know your name by day two. Many of the hotels have been around for years and really know how to look after their guests - the service tends to be more personal than in some of the newer mega-resorts.

For activities, you're spoiled for choice! The snorkelling right off the beach is brilliant - the coral reef is teeming with tropical fish, and you might even spot a sea turtle if you're lucky. Golf enthusiasts will love the championship courses nearby, and if you're feeling adventurous, there are loads of excursions on your doorstep - zip-lining through the jungle, visits to local markets and villages, or boat trips to secluded beaches and swimming holes.

The nightlife strikes just the right note too - there are plenty of beachfront bars where you can dance to live music under the stars, but it's not so intense that you feel like you need earplugs to get to sleep! And the food scene is ace - you'll find everything from beachside grills serving the freshest seafood to international restaurants, plus loads of opportunities to try proper Dominican specialities like fresh mahi-mahi, plantains, and the most incredible tropical fruits.

It's perfect for multi-generational families, groups of friends with different interests, or couples who want romance and relaxation but also the option to be sociable and try new things. Basically, if you want a bit of everything from your Dominican holiday, Bavaro delivers in spades!
