Turn inset days into an inset week

Inset Week

We want inset weeks!

We're calling for schools to stop spreading their five mandatory inset days across the school year, and group them into one dedicated Inset Week instead. That way, families can access cheaper holidays outside of peak periods.

We don’t think it’s right that parents have to to choose between paying over the odds for a jolly during the school holidays, or taking their kids out of school during in term time (and getting slapped with a fine).

Inset Weeks can help reduce term-time absences while allowing families to holiday for less. Some schools are already doing it, and - spoiler - it works! (More on that below).

Contact your child's headteacher today and ask for an Inset Week.

Inset week

How does it work?

By grouping inset days into an Inset Week outside of peak school holiday periods, families can travel at lower off-peak prices without breaking any rules or facing fines.

Why introduce an inset week?

  • Helps families holiday for less.

  • Reduces term-time absences.

  • Improves overall attendance.

  • Protects learning time.

How can my child's school do inset week?

Simple - ask your headteacher.

We've even created ready-to-send letters and emails to make it as easy as possible.

Inset week at Python Hill Academy

Python Hill Academy already have an Inset Week

Python Hill Academy in Mansfield has successfully had an Inset Week for the past seven years, helping hundreds of families holiday for less, while maintaining an attendance rate above the national average.

Mr Andy Stirland, Principal at Python Hill Academy in Nottinghamshire, said:We have been running an Inset Week, which is tagged onto the spring bank holiday in May, for the last seven years. Parents should not be faced with fines or enforcement for wanting to spend family time together.

“Inset Week has allowed families at our school the option of cheaper holidays while maintaining our attendance figures. Our school attendance figures have been above the national average every year and I believe without Inset Week this would be a very different story.”

Inset Week

How would Inset Week actually work?

• Schools already have five mandatory inset days.
• Inset Week simply groups them into one block.
• No extra days off. No funding changes. No policy reform.
• Ideally staggered by region to avoid new price spikes.
• It is a simple, school-led calendar decision.

Wouldn't this just create another peak and push prices up again?

• That is why regional staggering matters.
• Right now demand is compressed into the same fixed weeks nationwide.
• Spreading demand smooths out those peaks.
• We already see this principle working across different school holiday regions.

Are schools already doing this?

• Yes. Headteachers in England and Wales have autonomy over inset days.
• This does not require national policy change.
• It uses existing flexibility differently.

Would this undermine education or teacher training?

• No. It does not reduce inset days or training time.
• It simply groups the five days together.
• Schools like Python Hill Academy show it can work without harming attendance.
• The aim is to reduce disruptive, unplanned absences.

Critics say unions will oppose this. What is your response?

• Nearly half a million fines shows the status quo is not working.
• Teachers see the disruption caused by term-time absences.
• 81% of teachers support grouping inset days.
• We are encouraging consideration, not mandating change.

Why focus on England and Wales?

• Headteachers here have flexibility over inset days.
• In Scotland, term dates are centrally controlled.
• This campaign focuses where schools have the power to act.

What are you asking parents and headteachers to do?

Parents:

Send a letter, WhatsApp or email to your headteacher asking them to consider an Inset Week.

Headteachers:

Group your five inset days into one week to cut absences, protect learning time and help families holiday for less.
