Expert's review

We know what you're thinking. We're always banging on about how good our hotels are, but how do we REALLY know? Well, we took one for the team and flew out to Crete to check this one out for ourselves. Our findings? This resort is like one big breath of fresh sea air. With a minimal animation programme and 'neighbourhood' style accommodation, Aldemar Royal Mare is all about relaxation. And let's be honest, with VIP rooms, peaceful gardens everywhere you turn and a breezy seafront bar, it'd be pretty hard not to feel relaxed here. We didn't want to leave!

Hotel highlights

  • Minimal animation to create a relaxing atmosphere

  • Pools and accommodation blocks are widely spread, so even when the hotel is full, it never feels busy!

  • Rooms set out in different 'neighbourhoods' for a Cretan village feel

  • 29(!!) pools on offer in total, including two main pools

  • Laidback beachfront bar (which we tried and loved)

  • Look out for 'Big Ben Square' - a pretty courtyard with its own miniature stone 'Big Ben' structure - ideal if you're missing a taste of home!

Location

  • Right along the beach

  • 25 minutes away from Heraklion Airport

  • 2.5 hours away from Chania Airport

Rooms

  • Double Bungalow - bright and elegant rooms with a traditional style, including a large dressing table and a pretty terrace. Choose from garden or sea views.

  • Double Bungalow Superior - a modern twist on the 'Double Bungalow' room type, with large, comfortable beds and either a sofa or armchairs.

  • Double Bungalow VIP Premium - these rooms offer the best views of the hotel gardens and pool areas

  • Junior Suite - spacious rooms that stay true to the traditional 'Cretan' vibe, with a sectioned-off bedroom area which leads into a comfortable living area, before opening onto the terrace. You can opt for a sharing pool or private pool, as well as having the option of a seafront position if you want the best of both worlds!

  • VIP Suite - you can't beat a bit of VIP treatment, and that's exactly what you'll get in these rooms. With a large bedroom, a living area, a spacious bathroom and a terrace which steps straight into the sharing pool area, what more could you need?

  • Suite - stylish accommodation with more room than you'll know what to do with, complete with a huge, comfortable bed and a sharing pool terrace

Did you know?

As the name suggests, this hotel is known for its thalassotherapy - the use of seawater as a form of spa therapy, designed to cleanse and soothe the skin. Given how close to the sea this hotel is, it definitely makes sense to use what Mother Nature has to offer! Get yourself booked into the spa centre if you fancy giving this unique treatment a whirl.

Food & Drink

  • Symposio Main Restaurant - local and international dishes served at breakfast, lunch and dinner, including salads, meats fresh from the grill and a variety of desserts - with seating overlooking the sea, of course!

  • Beach Restaurant Albatros - you can't go wrong with lunch by the beach, can you? We stopped here for a bite to eat and the baked feta with peppers and onions was DELISH. Highly recommend. When in Greece, right?

  • Mediterranean à la carte Candia - spoil yourself silly with a generous dinner menu at this Mediterranean restaurant with stunning views

  • Italian à la carte El Greco - delicious Italian food served at brunch (VIP) and dinner amongst the hotel gardens

  • Pan-Asian à la carte Royal Palm - your favourite Asian dishes served in the heart of Crete for a dinner you won't forget

  • Snack Bar Allegro - street food and light snacks served from morning to evening

  • Minos Main Bar - the place to be for fruity cocktails, coffees, beers and fresh juices

  • Kalypso Pool Bar - cocktails, mocktails, wine, spirits and soft drinks served poolside. What could be better?!

  • Elements Pool Bar - this laidback poolside bar is the perfect place to enjoy a range of drinks in the sun, open from morning until late in the evening

Sports & Entertainment

  • 29 pools in total, including a main pool and a children's pool

  • Mini club for ages 4-12, offering daily fun and games for the kids from 10:00-18:00

  • 2 tennis courts and 2 squash courts if you fancy a game!

  • Games Room to keep younger guests occupied (extra charge)

  • A sand and gravel beach directly across from the hotel with activities such as beach volleyball and watersports (extra charges may apply)

  • Fitness centre for those who want to work up a sweat!

  • Spa facilities, including the iconic thalasso treatment, as well as an indoor heated pool, massage services, Hammam and face and body treatments (extra charges may apply)

  • The Crete Golf Club just 7km away with its 18-hole golf course, or if you prefer something a little more beginner-friendly, how about the on-site mini golf?
