Amsterdam: where canals are the new streets, bikes are the new cars, and tulips are the new... well, they're just tulips, but they're everywhere, and we love them 🌷

Holidays to Amsterdam 2026

  • There's a museum for pretty much EVERYTHING (we're not kidding)

  • Home to iconic canals for boat rides and waterside strolls

  • Coffee shops on every corner ('cafés' are something a bit different over here, FYI 👀)

  • Inclusive culture - it's the gay capital of Europe! 🌈

Good to Know - Amsterdam Holidays

  • ☀️ Summers hit around 20-22°C with long daylight hours, but Amsterdam can be rainy year-round - pack layers and a light waterproof whatever month you go

  • 💶 A pint in a local bar runs about €5-6, a meal out for two around €50-70, and a canal cruise from about €15pp - not the cheapest city break but proper good value for what you get

  • 🧀 The Netherlands produces over 650 million kilos of cheese per year - Gouda, Edam and Leerdammer all originated here, so you're basically duty-bound to try them all

Best Day Trips to make on your Amsterdam holidays

Amsterdam is a 10/10 city break, but the Netherlands is actually tiny, meaning you can swap the canals for windmills or the beach in less than an hour. If you fancy escaping the hustle for a bit, these day trips are a must-do on your holidays to Amsterdam...

  • Zaanse Schans - the postcard-perfect Dutch experience with spinning windmills, clog workshops, and the smell of chocolate in the air (seriously).

  • Keukenhof Gardens - only open in spring (March-May), this place is an explosion of millions of tulips - your Instagram feed will never level up like this again (probably).

  • Zandvoort aan Zee - ideally located just 30 mins by train, this is "Amsterdam Beach" - think golden sands, beach bars, and chilling by the North Sea.

  • Haarlem - known as "Little Amsterdam," it’s got all the pretty canals and cobbled streets but with zero crowds and way chiller vibes.

  • Utrecht - a university city with a buzzing cafe culture and unique split-level canals that make for the perfect alfresco pint spot.

  • Rotterdam - if you want something totally different, head here for futuristic architecture, massive food markets, and a proper modern city feel.

Ah, the weather in Amsterdam... It's like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get. One minute you're basking in the sun, and the next, you're in a scene from "Singing in the Rain," minus the choreography. But hey, that's what makes it exciting, right?

So, let's talk seasons. Spring (March to May) is when Amsterdam turns into a floral wonderland. We're talking tulips, people! The temperatures range from 6°C to 15°C, so pack a light jacket and your flower crown. Summer (June to August) is the high season, with temperatures flirting between 15°C and 25°C. It's the perfect time for canal cruises, bike rides, and basically living your best life.

Autumn (September to November) offers a palette of colours that even Van Gogh would envy. With temperatures ranging from 8°C to 17°C, it's crisp but not too chilly. Winter (December to February), on the other hand, is like Amsterdam's moody phase. Temperatures can drop to 0°C, but hey, that's what mulled wine is for!

So, when's the best time to visit? If you're looking for that sweet spot between lovely weather and fewer tourists, late spring and early autumn are your golden tickets. But honestly, Amsterdam's weather has its own charm in every season. Just pack layers and an adventurous spirit, and you're good to go! Read more about Amsterdam weather.

FAQs

How long does it take to fly to Amsterdam?

It takes between 1 hour 10 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes to fly to Amsterdam, depending on where you're flying from in the UK.

What's the time difference between the UK and Amsterdam?

Amsterdam is one hour ahead of the UK - no jet lag here.

What language do they speak in Amsterdam?

The official language of Amsterdam is Dutch but you'll hear English widely spoken here too.

Is Amsterdam good for a city break?

In short, yes! Amsterdam city breaks are amazing. With such a short flight time, you can really make the most of a long weekend away - and still be home in time for work (eurgh). There's so much to do in Amsterdam too, one weekend may just not be enough...

What's the best month to visit Amsterdam?

April or September are perfect if you're looking to hit up all the scenic spots without battling the busy Summer crowds. But, if we're being honest, April is when the tulips are in full bloom, and Keukenhof is not to be missed, so we're low-key biased for April (don't tell September).

Are things open in Amsterdam during winter?

Yep! It's perfect for getting your museum and cafe fix as long as you've got space in the overhead for scarves and coats (or just wear em' all on the plane and finesse the system). If you visit towards the end of the year, then you get all the festive feels too, so we deffo recommend a winter jolly here.

Do I need to book the Anne Frank House in advance?

This is the big one. You absolutely cannot just "rock up" on the day. Tickets go on sale online exactly six weeks in advance (usually on Tuesdays at 10 am), and they sell out in minutes. If you haven't booked before you fly, your chances of getting in are basically zero. Set an alarm!
