Less touristy than Amsterdam but just as pretty, Leiden is a maze of waterways, windmills and world-class museums – all with a chilled-out, studenty buzz.
Highlights
🎓 Birthplace of Rembrandt & home to the country’s oldest uni – history, culture and brains all in one.
🌷 Tulips galore – visit in spring and you’re just a pedal away from colourful fields of blooms.
🛶 Canal-hopping heaven – explore the city by boat, kayak or waterside café.
🧠 Museum central – from science to archaeology to natural history, there’s a museum for everyone.
Getting around
Leiden is compact and easy to explore, whether you’re walking, cycling or floating along a canal. The historic centre is mostly pedestrianised, with bike paths criss-crossing the whole city – this is the Netherlands, after all. If you’re coming from Amsterdam or The Hague, you’re in luck – the train journey takes around 30 minutes or less. Once you’re in Leiden, trams aren’t needed – everything’s within reach, especially if you hire a bike or hop on a boat.
Things to do for families in Leiden
Leiden’s a hit with families thanks to its hands-on museums and outdoor adventures. Start with Naturalis, the natural history museum, where kids can meet dinosaurs (including a full T-Rex skeleton!) and learn all about the natural world. Then head to CORPUS, a museum literally shaped like a human body – it’s part theme park, part science centre, and totally unforgettable. If the weather’s kind, Leidse Hout park is perfect for a picnic, a game of frisbee, or a visit to the petting zoo. Fancy a boat ride? Grab a family-sized pedal boat and explore the canals at your own pace – life jackets and laughter guaranteed.
Things to do for couples in Leiden
Romantic strolls, candlelit dinners and serene canals – Leiden’s got couple goals written all over it. Start your day with a lazy brunch on a terrace by the water, then wander hand-in-hand through the Botanical Gardens, one of the oldest in Europe. For a cultural twist, the Museum of the History of Science or Museum De Lakenhal makes for a fascinating date. And when evening rolls around, book a canal dinner cruise or grab a quiet corner in a cosy brown café with some excellent Dutch wine or craft beer. Just don’t forget to snap a kiss on the Lovers’ Bridge (AKA Koornbrug) – because pics or it didn’t happen.
Things to do for groups in Leiden
Leiden's laid-back vibe and walkable centre make it ideal for group city breaks. Start with a private canal cruise – you can BYO drinks or opt for a catered package, depending on the party vibes. Culture vultures? Head to Museum Boerhaave for hands-on science, or do a cheeky Rembrandt-themed walking tour around the artist’s old stomping grounds. Looking to let your hair down? The city’s buzzing student nightlife means cheap cocktails, live music, and clubs that stay open late. Add in quirky group-friendly restaurants, escape rooms and scenic spots for squad selfies, and you’ve got the makings of a top-tier group getaway.
Things to do for foodies in Leiden
If you like your city breaks with a side of delicious, Leiden’s culinary scene won’t disappoint. The city’s mix of Dutch tradition and international flair means you can nibble Indonesian rijsttafel one night and tuck into hearty stamppot the next. Don’t miss De Markt, a twice-weekly open-air market where you can snack your way through fresh stroopwafels, cheeses and local delicacies. For sit-down dining, check out canal-side gems like Lot en de Walvis or Pieterskwartier’s bistros for upscale Dutch dining. Bonus points if you visit during Leiden Culinair, the city’s annual summer food fest – it’s a four-day flavour frenzy.
