Climate Overview

Malta’s weather is all about mild winters and long, sunny summers, making it a favourite for UK holidaymakers who aren’t keen on rolling the dice with rain. The islands get a steady dose of sunshine nearly every month, and the sea’s never far from warm enough for a dip. You’ll notice the difference between the main island and Gozo - Gozo tends to be a touch quieter, but both spots share Malta’s reliably pleasant climate.

The year starts off on the cooler side with decent sunshine and some rain, but by late spring the temperatures climb and rainfall drops off. Summer is practically made for lounging outside, and even autumn keeps things comfortable, with the sea staying inviting well into November. Malta’s weather doesn’t really do extremes, so you won’t be caught out by any whopper storms or chilly snaps.

Seasons Overview

Spring (March - May): Spring in Malta is easy-going, with temperatures rising from 17°C in March to 24°C in May. Rain becomes a rare guest, dropping from 40mm in March to just 10mm by May. Sunshine stretches to 10 hours a day, and humidity gradually eases. By late spring, you’ll be swapping jumpers for swimwear and plotting your first holibobs dip.

Summer (June - August): Summer here is peak beach season. The air heats up to 29°C in June and stays around 32°C in July and August. Rain disappears almost entirely, and the sea warms up from 22°C to 27°C. Expect up to 13 hours of sun daily, so pack your sunscreen and get ready for top-tier lazy days by the water. If you’re not a fan of sizzling heat, July and August might have you seeking shade every now and then.

Autumn (September - November): Autumn keeps things lively, with warm air from 29°C in September down to 21°C in November. The sea stays inviting, hovering between 26°C and 21°C. Rain picks up, especially in November, but you still get 7-9 hours of sunshine most days. It’s ideal for late-season holibobs - you can still swim, but bring a brolly just in case.

Winter (December - February): Winter in Malta is mild, with temperatures holding steady around 16°C to 17°C and sea temperatures never dropping below 15°C. Rain is more frequent, hitting up to 95mm in December, but sunny spells are common, with up to 7 hours of daylight. You won’t need a heavy coat, but a light jacket and a bit of British optimism go a long way.

Best Time To Visit

For a classic beach holiday in Malta, June to September is your best bet. The air is reliably warm, ranging from 29°C to 32°C, and the sea reaches its most delish temperatures - up to 27°C in August. Rain is almost non-existent in summer, and you’ll get up to 13 hours of sunshine, so every day feels like a bonus. Even late May and early October can work for those who prefer it a touch cooler, with the sea still warm enough for swimming and fewer crowds. If you’re after winter sun, Malta’s mild climate means you can visit year-round, but you’ll want to bring a brolly for the occasional shower.
