A beach holiday and a Venice city break rolled into one - that's the Lido di Venezia in a nutshell. This elegant 11km island sits between the Venetian lagoon and the Adriatic Sea, with long sandy beaches on one side and a vaporetto ride to St Mark's Square on the other. Think Art Nouveau villas, tree-lined avenues, the Venice Film Festival and Blue Flag beaches. It's where Venetians go to escape the crowds, and it makes a proper good base for exploring Venice without the eye-watering prices of staying in the centre.

FAQs

How do I get to the Lido di Venezia from the UK & Ireland?

Fly into Venice Marco Polo Airport, which has direct flights from several UK & Ireland airports. From the airport, you can take the Alilaguna water bus (red line) directly to the Lido, or get a water taxi. The journey from the airport to the Lido takes about 60-90 minutes depending on the route.

What are the beaches like on the Lido?

The Lido has over 10km of sandy beach on the Adriatic side. There are free public sections (Blue Moon beach is the most popular) with basic facilities, and private lido sections where you can hire sunbeds, umbrellas and cabanas for the day. The sand is fine and the water is shallow and calm, making it great for families. Further south towards Alberoni, the beaches get wilder and more natural with sand dunes and fewer facilities.

How do I get from the Lido to Venice?

Dead easy. The vaporetto (water bus) runs frequently between the Lido and Venice, with services to St Mark's Square taking about 10 minutes. Lines 1, 2 and other routes connect the Lido to different parts of the city. You can buy single tickets or multi-day passes from ACTV. Several of the five-star hotels also run their own free shuttle boats to St Mark's.

Is the Lido di Venezia good for families?

Really good, actually. The beaches are shallow and safe for kids, there's loads of space compared to central Venice, and the flat island is easy to get around on foot or by bike. Hotels like the DB Villas Le Ville del Lido Resort have pools and family-friendly facilities. It also works out cheaper for food and drink than staying in central Venice.

What is the Venice Film Festival?

The oldest film festival in the world, running since 1932. It takes place on the Lido every September (2-12 September in 2026) at the Palazzo del Cinema. World premieres, red carpets and A-list stars take over the island for just under two weeks. Some screenings are open to the public with tickets, and even without tickets the atmosphere and celebrity spotting are brilliant. Just be aware that hotel prices spike during the festival.

Is the Lido cheaper than staying in central Venice?

Generally yes, both for hotels and eating out. Restaurant and bar prices on the Lido are noticeably lower than around St Mark's Square and the Rialto. You get more space for your money in hotels too - rooms tend to be bigger and many come with gardens, pools or beach access that you simply won't find in central Venice. The vaporetto makes it quick and easy to pop into the city whenever you want.
