Climate Overview
Indonesia is the kind of place where warm, tropical weather is pretty much the norm year-round. You’ll find days hovering right around 30°C, with humidity that can make your hair do a few tricks, and sunshine that feels endless. Rainfall does spike in certain months, but the picture is always bright for beachgoers.
If you’re eyeing the likes of Bali, Lombok, or the Gili Islands, you’ll notice slightly drier spells during the middle of the year. Sumatra and Kalimantan tend to get their share of rain even in the so-called dry months, so it’s worth checking local forecasts if you want to hit more than one spot. Indonesia’s climate is built for holibobs, but each island has its own rhythm.
Seasons Overview
Spring (March - May): Spring in Indonesia starts to dial back the rain, with March seeing 210mm and May dropping to just 80mm. Temperatures stay steady at 31°C, and the sea sits at a lovely 28°C. By April and May, the humidity eases off and sunshine stretches to 9 hours a day. You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s summer already.
Summer (June - August): Summer is when Indonesia really leans into its beachy vibe. Air temperatures hover around 30°C, sea temp slips to 27°C, and rainfall drops to its lowest at just 25mm in August. Sunshine is out for 9-10 hours daily, and humidity is at its most comfortable. You won’t need much convincing to take a dip.
Autumn (September - November): Autumn brings a gradual return of humidity and rain, but it’s still prime time for beach days. September and October hit 31-32°C, with sea temperatures back up to 28°C. Rain picks up - up to 150mm in November - but sunshine stays strong at 8-9 hours. If you’re not fussed about the odd shower, it’s a top-tier season.
Winter (December - February): Winter in Indonesia is a mixed bag. Temperatures stick at 31°C, sea is reliably warm at 28°C, but rainfall jumps - 330mm in January and 270mm in December. Humidity rises to 81-82%. Still, with 7-8 hours of sun daily, you get plenty of beach time between showers. If you don’t mind dodging the rain, you’ll still get your dose of vitamin D.
Best Time To Visit
For a beach holiday in Indonesia, June through August is the sweet spot. The air temperature settles at 30°C, sea is a pleasant 27°C, rainfall drops right down to 25-50mm, and the sun stays out for 9-10 hours. Humidity is at its lowest, so you won’t feel sticky all day. Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands are especially popular during these months - think fewer showers, more sun, and plenty of time for lazy afternoons. If you’re after dry days and long stretches on the sand, this period is your go-to.
