Climate Overview

Hong Kong serves up a climate that’s reliably warm and humid, with temperatures rarely dipping below 19°C even in winter. You’ll get plenty of sunshine most months, and when the rain does arrive, it tends to do so in style - especially as summer rolls in. This is a spot where you can swap drizzle for sea breeze nearly all year round, though you’ll want to keep one eye on those summer showers.

The city’s coastline is dotted with islands like Lantau and Cheung Chau, each with their own local twist on the weather, but generally, the conditions stay much the same across the region. Whether you’re hopping over to a quieter beach or sticking to the city’s main stretches, Hong Kong’s seaside keeps things lively and warm from January to December.

Seasons Overview

Spring (March - May): Spring in Hong Kong starts to dial up the warmth, with temperatures rising from 22°C in March to 29°C in May. Humidity creeps up alongside, and rain showers become more frequent - especially by May, which sees 290mm of rain. You’ll still catch around 3 to 5 hours of sunshine each day, so pack a brolly and some shades.

Summer (June - August): Summer is scorchio here, with July and August hitting 32°C and the sea a balmy 29°C. Rainfall is at its peak, with June and August both seeing well over 400mm, so sudden downpours are part of the package. Still, there’s a lush seven hours of sun in July, and the beaches buzz with energy.

Autumn (September - November): Autumn is when Hong Kong really shines for beachgoers. Temperatures cool slightly to 28°C in October and 25°C by November, the rain eases off, and sunshine hours stay generous at 6 to 7 per day. Humidity drops to a more comfortable 71% by November, making this a top-tier time to visit.

Winter (December - February): Winter feels mild, with days hovering around 19°C to 21°C. Rain is rare, especially in January and December, which only see 30mm each. You’ll still get 4 to 6 hours of sun, and the sea doesn’t drop below 18°C, so a winter dip isn’t out of the question for the brave.

Best Time To Visit

If you’re angling for the best beach weather in Hong Kong, autumn is your safest bet. September to November offers comfortable temperatures from 31°C down to 25°C, lower humidity, and a sharp drop in rainfall - November only sees 40mm. There’s still plenty of sunshine, which keeps the beaches inviting without the sticky heat or heavy rain of midsummer. Spring is also pleasant, but expect more rain as May approaches. Summer is best left to those who like it hot and don’t mind the odd whopper of a shower. Winter is mild but less beachy, though you’ll find quieter sands and surprisingly warm seas if you fancy a peaceful holibob.
