The world's second-largest country has two main hubs for tourists: Toronto for the Niagara Falls / CN Tower / Great Lakes-and-culture, and Vancouver for the mountains-meet-ocean / Whistler / Vancouver Island.
Canada Holiday Highlights 2026
🏙️ Two contrasting big cities: Toronto is the financial-capital-meets-Niagara-Falls coast on the eastern side; Vancouver is the mountain-and-ocean Pacific city on the west. Most Canada trips are built around one or the other (or both, with a 4-hour internal flight between).
🏔️ Bucket-list landscapes: Niagara Falls a 90-minute drive from Toronto; Banff National Park, Lake Louise and the Rocky Mountains within a long drive of Calgary; Vancouver Island, Whistler ski resort and the Sea-to-Sky Highway from Vancouver. Some of the most photographed natural scenery in North America.
🐻 Wildlife on tap: bears, whales, moose and elk in their natural habitat. Whale-watching tours run from Vancouver Island (orcas, humpbacks); brown bears and moose are spottable in Banff; polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba (further afield, but bookable).
🌃 City-break done right: Toronto's CN Tower and Distillery District; Vancouver's Stanley Park and Granville Island; Quebec City's old-town European feel a short hop from Toronto. World-class restaurants, brilliant public transport, walkable downtowns.
🍁 Foodie scene worth the trip: poutine, maple syrup, fresh-off-the-boat Pacific seafood in Vancouver, Toronto's mosaic of immigrant-cuisine neighbourhoods (Chinatown, Little Italy, Greektown, Koreatown). Some of the best restaurants in North America outside New York.
🛬 Direct flights from the UK: Heathrow to Toronto in around 7 to 8 hours on BA and Air Canada; Heathrow to Vancouver in around 9.5 hours on BA and Air Canada. Daily services year-round.
☀️ Good to Know - Holidays to Canada
☀️ Canada’s climate varies BIG time. Summers can hit 25–30°C in cities like Toronto, while winters drop well below freezing. Pack for the season (and then some!)
💶 Canada uses the Canadian dollar (CAD). Expect around £4–6 for a beer, £10–20 for a meal, and good-value transport in major cities
🍁 Canada has a strategic reserve of maple syrup: like an oil reserve, but for syrup. The Quebec Global Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve genuinely exists, sets world prices, and was famously robbed in 2011-12 when thieves siphoned millions of pounds' worth out of warehouse barrels and replaced it with water. Nine people went to prison. Canada produces 71% of the world's maple syrup; Quebec alone makes 90% of that.
🗣️ Local Lingo – Talk Like a Canadian 🇨🇦
In Canada, English is widely spoken (with French in places like Quebec), and the slang is friendly, polite, and easy to pick up 😉
👋 “Hey” – a classic casual greeting
🙏 “Thanks” / “Thank you” – politeness is a big deal here!
😊 “Sorry” – you’ll hear this A LOT… even when it’s not needed
🍟 “Poutine” (poo-teen) – chips, gravy, cheese curds… trust us
😎 “Eh?” (ay) – added to the end of sentences, like “nice day, eh?”
Best Day Trips on your Canada holidays
Canada’s all about exploring beyond the city – and there’s plenty to see.
💧 Niagara Falls is a 90-minute drive or 2-hour bus ride from Toronto, with Maid of the Mist boat trips into the spray, the Skylon Tower viewing platform, and the Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country a short drive on. The most photographed waterfall in North America, and a doable day-trip from a Toronto base.
⛷️ Whistler is a 2-hour drive from Vancouver up the Sea-to-Sky Highway, with one of North America's biggest ski areas in winter and Olympic-grade mountain-biking and zip-lining in summer. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola crosses between mountains and is genuinely unforgettable.
🏔️ Banff National Park is a 90-minute drive from Calgary (so an internal flight from Toronto or Vancouver first), with turquoise Lake Louise, the Banff townsite, the Icefields Parkway road and the Rocky Mountain scenery that makes the postcards. Worth two or three days at minimum.
🇨🇦 Quebec City is the European-old-town corner of North America, with cobbled streets, French as the working language, and the Château Frontenac hotel anchoring the cliff-top old town. A 90-minute flight from Toronto or a longer scenic train ride along the St Lawrence River.
🐋 Vancouver Island is reached by ferry or seaplane from Vancouver, with whale-watching for orcas and humpbacks, the gardens of Victoria, and rugged Pacific coastline along the Tofino surf zone. A two-day minimum if you want to do more than just Victoria.

🗺️ Canada Holidays 2026/2027 Travel Guide
💑 Couples
🌅 Stanley Park Sea Wall walk in Vancouver: the 9km waterfront path loops around the park's whole headland, with views across to North Vancouver's mountains, totem-pole stops and rental bikes if you'd rather wheel it. Free, brilliant for sunset.
🍷 Niagara-on-the-Lake wine tasting: an hour past Niagara Falls, with around 20 wineries open for cellar-door tasting (£15-25pp). Pair with a stay at a B&B in the old town for the full long-weekend treatment.
🏔️ Capilano Suspension Bridge or Lynn Canyon: the suspension-bridge-through-the-rainforest experience above North Vancouver. Capilano is the bigger, busier paid-entry version; Lynn Canyon is free, smaller and far less crowded. Pick your trade-off.
🍽️ Distillery District dinner in Toronto: the cobbled, pedestrianised heritage zone in old Toronto has a string of brilliant restaurants in restored Victorian factory buildings. El Catrin (Mexican), Cluny Bistro (French), Pure Spirits (oysters and seafood) all worth booking.
🛌 Sleep at the Fairmont Banff Springs: if you're doing the Banff side-quest, the heritage castle hotel built by the railway in 1888 is the romantic anchor. Worth a single splurge night, even if you base elsewhere for the rest of the trip.

FAQs
When's the best time to visit Canada?
When's the best time to visit Canada?
Depends entirely on what you want. June to September is peak summer for both Toronto and Vancouver, with warm weather, full festival schedules and every restaurant patio open. September to early November brings the famous fall colours through Toronto, Quebec and the Eastern Townships, properly photogenic. December to March is winter sport season, with Whistler, Banff and Mont-Tremblant all running ski operations. April and May can be unpredictable in Toronto (mud-season weather as winter releases).
Is Canada good for families?
Is Canada good for families?
Yes, particularly the cities. Toronto and Vancouver both have well-funded public museums, aquariums, science centres, big parks (Stanley Park, High Park) and family-friendly transit. Long-haul flight is the main constraint, so most families do a week or two rather than a long weekend. The Banff/Lake Louise side-quest is brilliant with older kids; Whistler a winter family destination.
How do I keep a Canada holiday cheap and make sure it's still brilliant?
How do I keep a Canada holiday cheap and make sure it's still brilliant?
Travel May-June or September-October (peak summer rates drop noticeably).
Pick one city as a base rather than trying to span the country in a week (internal Toronto-Vancouver flights add £200-400 to the trip).
Eat at the food halls and food courts in the public markets (St Lawrence Market in Toronto, Granville Island in Vancouver) for proper meals at £10-15 instead of restaurant £30-50.
Use city public transit (Toronto's PRESTO card, Vancouver's Compass card) instead of taxis.
Free attractions count too: Stanley Park, Toronto Islands, the cliff walks at Lynn Canyon, Niagara Falls itself (only the boats and observation towers cost).
