The best beaches to visit in Sarande

Sarande's own beach is lively and brilliant for atmosphere, but the surrounding coastline is where things get truly jaw-dropping. Here are our faves:

• Sarande Beach – the city's beating heart. A long sweep of smooth white pebbles curving around the bay, with a promenade packed with cafes, bars and boat-trip kiosks right behind it. Not Albania's prettiest beach, but absolutely the most atmospheric.

• Mirror Beach (Pasqyra) – halfway between Sarande and Ksamil, this little beauty takes its name from the perfectly still, mirror-like water on calm mornings. White sand, clear turquoise water and a far more laid-back vibe than Sarande's main strip.

• Ksamil Beach – just 14km south and worth every minute of the journey. Soft white sand, electric turquoise water and tiny offshore islands you can kayak or boat out to. One of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, full stop.

• Krorez Beach – only reachable by boat from Sarande, this wild and completely untouched cove feels like a proper secret. No sunbeds, no beach clubs, just pristine water and the sound of waves. A proper bucket-list swim.

• Mango Beach – a chilled, sandy stretch just outside the city with a relaxed beach club atmosphere and great views. A favourite for locals and visitors alike when they want something a touch quieter than the main bay.

• Pulebardha Beach – a pebbly cove a short bus ride from the city, lapped by clear shallows flickering with fish. A reminder of the Mediterranean as it used to be before the sunbeds arrived.

• Ksamil Islands – the four tiny uninhabited islands just offshore from Ksamil. Paddle out by kayak or pedalo, snorkel in the shallows and feel like you've found somewhere no one else knows about. (Thousands of people know about it. Still magical.)

Sarande is compact and brilliantly walkable, but where you base yourself does shape your holiday. Here's the lowdown:

Family holidays

The waterfront strip around the main promenade is perfect. Everything is walkable, the water is calm, and the bus to Ksamil and Butrint runs regularly from the seafront. Easy, low-stress and with enough restaurants to keep everyone happy.

Groups

Stay central, close to the promenade. Sarande's nightlife is genuinely excellent — rooftop cocktail bars, seafront clubs and late-night spots that keep going well into the early hours. It's the liveliest city on the Riviera for a group night out.

Couples

A hilltop hotel gives you the most romantic experience in Sarande, with panoramic views over the bay and Corfu glittering in the distance. Combine it with a sunset at Lekursi Castle and a beachfront dinner and you've got a proper date-night destination.

Good to know

🤩 Fun fact: Sarande sits just 3km from Corfu at its closest point — you can practically see the Greek island from the promenade. The fast ferry takes 30 minutes and costs next to nothing. That's two countries in one holiday.

🏖️ Best beach: Ksamil, without question. Just 14km south of Sarande and widely considered one of the best beaches in Europe. White sand, turquoise water, tiny islands to swim to. Go early in peak season to bag a good spot.

💶 Money Talk(s): Sarande is excellent value compared to the Greek islands just across the water. A cold Korca beer on the promenade is around £1.50-2, a fresh grilled fish at a local taverna is £6-10, and a full dinner for two with wine comes in around £25-30. Cash is king for smaller spots.

Joni Hotel Ksamil – technically in Ksamil but bookable as part of a Sarande holiday, this one puts your group right on the doorstep of the Riviera's best beaches. Wake up, walk out, swim. Repeat.

Value

Things to do for Families

• Ksamil beach day – hop on the cheap and regular bus south from the promenade and you're at one of Europe's best beaches in 15 minutes. The calm, shallow water and sandy shores are absolute gold for families. Go before 9am in July and August to beat the crowds.

• Butrint National Park – Albania's most celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Site, just 22km from Sarande. An ancient Greek and Roman city with a theatre, baths, basilica and Byzantine walls, all set in lush forested grounds. Kids love the scale of it; grown-ups love the history.

• Lekursi Castle – a 16th-century hilltop fortress above the city with jaw-dropping panoramic views over Sarande, the Ionian Sea and Corfu. There's a restaurant up top too — brilliant for a sundowner once the kids have run around the ruins.

• Sarande promenade – the evening xhiro (traditional Albanian evening stroll) along the seafront is a brilliant family activity that costs nothing. Ice cream, sea views, locals out socialising — a genuinely lovely way to spend a warm evening.

• Day trip to Corfu – the fast ferry from Sarande takes just 30 minutes and arrives in Corfu Town. A brilliant, easy day trip that gives the kids the excitement of going to another country mid-holiday.

Things to do for Couples

• Sunset at Lekursi Castle – climb or cab up to the hilltop fortress above the city as the sun drops over Corfu. The views are absolutely extraordinary and there's a restaurant right in the castle walls for a romantic dinner with arguably the best backdrop in Albania.

• The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) – a mysterious, impossibly blue natural spring that bubbles up from unknown depths in a forest near Sarande. Divers have gone 50 metres down and still can't find the bottom. Genuinely magical, and a brilliant half-day out.

• Boat trip to Butrint – charter a small boat from the harbour and arrive at the UNESCO ruins from the water, via the Vivari Channel. A completely different way to see one of Europe's great ancient sites, and properly romantic.

• Seafood dinner on the promenade – fresh fish landed that morning, local Sheshi i Bardhë wine and an Ionian sunset. Sarande does this better than almost anywhere on the Riviera. Pull up a chair and let the evening take care of itself.

• Ferry day trip to Corfu – 30 minutes each way and you're in Greece for the day. Wander Corfu Town's Venetian old town, have lunch and be back in Sarande for sunset cocktails. Two countries, one day. Proper holiday magic.

Things to do for Groups

• Sarande nightlife – rooftop cocktail bars, waterfront clubs and late-night spots along the promenade make Sarande the best night out on the Albanian Riviera. Rooftop bar Tipsy, waterfront spot Limani and cocktail bar Jericho are all brilliant starting points. Bring your dancing shoes.

• Group boat trip along the coast – hire a shared or private boat from the harbour and spend the day hopping between hidden coves, swimming stops and beaches that are impossible to reach any other way. Cold drinks on deck are basically obligatory.

• Ksamil beach club day – taxi or bus down to Ksamil and set up at one of the beach clubs for the day. Sunloungers, cocktails, the bluest water you've ever seen and usually a banging playlist. A perfect group beach day from Sarande.

• Gjirokaster day trip – pile into some taxis and make the drive up to Albania's UNESCO-listed stone city in the mountains. Cobbled streets, a hilltop castle and the world's most dramatic setting for lunch. A proper talking point of a day.
