How to spend your summer: Home vs Away

Summer holidays are our favourite time of the year – the hot weather, it's holiday season and the family are all together. Whether you spend your days enjoying picnics in the park, on a sandy beach in Spain or simply relaxing in your back garden, the summer months are definitely a time to look forward to. For those who like to get away in the summer, there’s always been that one question: To holiday abroad, or in the UK?

Here at On the Beach, we decided to look into this debate a little further. We did some research and found that out of 1,000 British families, the overall value for money was the top consideration when choosing a holiday. The general consensus is that a staycation in the UK is surely cheaper than jetting off abroad… but is it? From Southport to St Ives and Tenerife to Torremolinos, we checked out the average prices and temperatures of different holidays in the UK vs abroad to find the answer.

Take a look at the results below...

What did we find?

We did some digging and found that in 7 out of 10 cases, European holidays are lighter on the wallet than UK holidays, with a week’s holiday to St Ives costing up to £3,000 for a family of four. A family of four from Scotland could be paying an average of £1939.42 for a holiday to Torquay in Devon, whereas a weeks holiday in Torremolinos (Spain) would cost them an average of £1091. So, choosing to go to sunny Spain instead of the Southwest UK would save them a whopping £858! Similarly, a one-week family trip to Brighton could cost up to £2558.96, but the same family could jet off to Bodrum in Turkey for 36% less, where they’ll save £958.96 and can enjoy the 28°C heat.
