We have just returned home after spending five enjoyable nights at Sol E Mar hotel on a bed and Breakfast basis. The hotel has six floors, we were in room 605 on the 6th floor, all rooms have sea views and a spacious balcony where you can relax and enjoy the view. The room is dated but quite spacious with twin beds, they were quite firm with plenty of pillows and blankets with extra blankets in the wardrobe if needed. The room was cleaned daily with fresh towels every day, however, the bathroom could do with an overhaul, the base of the bath has hardly any enamel left on it and the shower curtain looked non too clean. The food at breakfast was quite good, with the usual choices of breads, cereals, continental breakfasts, to the more traditional English fayre of bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes, beans and mushrooms. I had a cooked breakfast most days and enjoyed every one. I can't comment on the Dinner or Lunch menus as we ate out at the many excellent restaurants in the Old Town. We did eat at the café connected to the hotel on the beach level twice for lunch and found the food and service to be very good. The biggest asset the hotel is it's staff, they were wonderful: polite, friendly, helpful and courteous. Every member of staff we met treated us well and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. The bar man in the Rainbow lounge has a phenomenal memory and remembered everyone's orders without writing anything down, he also dealt well with a stag party and treated them with the same courtesy as he did everyone else. We found the cost of the drinks in the hotel to be on a par with many of the local bars. Someone mentioned a lack of electrical sockets in the hotel room, there is more than one, I found four,,,you just have to look for them. We took our own kettle and bought milk from the nearby little supermarket. There is a lift to the 6th floor, the staff service lift, they didn't mind us using it and we were mindful that it is their lift so we didn't abuse it. The sun lounges on the beach DO NOT belong to the hotel, the beaches are under the control of the government/council. The cost for two sunbeds and a parasol is fifteen euros a day, not much more than in Spain where we paid 12 euros last year. This was our first visit to Portugal and we will be back and plan to stay at the Sol e Mar again.

The view from our room was beautiful to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean. The rooms are ok and kept clean with towels changed every day. The breakfast was very good with a wide variety of products. The staff would be hard to beat and are more than helpful. We loved the bar lounge area. The hotel is only a few steps from the main square (old town) and the shops. We went with a friend's recommendation from the airport to Albuferia with yellow fish, really easy to book online and excelent drivers.

Just had a four night stay at hotel on bed and breakfast basis with husband and another couple. The location is wonderful with all rooms facing the sea with great views of the beach and surrounding area. The rooms were large and spotlessly clean but a little dated and the beds were the hardest I have ever slept on.All the staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast varied and plentiful. The reception is on the fifth floor which is at street level and all the rooms are on lower floors going down to beach level. There is no pool or outside space so if you want to sunbathe you have to use the beach and the charge is 5 euros a day for each lounger and umbrella which was not a problem for a couple of days but would work out expensive for a week.I would definitely use the hotel again for a short break but perhaps not for a longer stay. The door at beach level closes at 8pm if you are out for the evening you have to use the door at reception which may be a problem if you have mobility problems as it can only be accessed by a flight of 41 steps or a fairly steep climb up the side streets.
