Arrived in a thunder storm and there for didn't see much as the rain was bouncing down. Reception on the top floor {5} and we were on floor 3, room spacious and clean but no bath plug. Took us 3 days to get one !! If you enjoy eating a meal in a pin ball machine you will enjoy the hotel restraint, quite small and every one banging into each other, heaven help you if you go at the height of summer I couldn't think of how they will manage. The choice at dinner was restricted to one fish & one meat, having said that I had the meat each evening and it was very good, the better half had mostly salad and that basically didn't change over the ten days. One client's comment regarding the sweets was that it sums it up when the best thing was the fresh oranges, the same every night. Ice cream first 2 nights when it was cold and wet then it warmed up and no ice cream bizarre. Very spacious lounge/bar area with a pianist each evening who was quite good with people dancing to him. The hotel has 2 lifts but only carry 3 pers each. Some guests were staying a few weeks and were repeat client's so they must be doing something right. All rooms have a marvouluse sea view however be aware that the sun beds in front, even though the hotel owns them, are not included and cost £11.50 per day which could easily rack up if you have children. Take your own towels and lay on the sand which is cleaned every morning. The Old Town is accessed from reception and about 40 steps down {and back up} or take the lift down to the beach and walk through a tunnel. Walking is quite hard if your on 'wonky' legs as it is very hilly and all cobbled streets. Shops are all the same and expect to be asked to into a restaurant every 10 yards they must eat every minute of the day in Portugal. If you expect Wi-Fi to work then you may be disappointed as they don't have their own server and are reliant on outside agencies, the last 4 days we had no signal. We started of badly with no bath plug and little room in the restaurant however the hotel grew on us, ideal for families wishing a beach holiday or a long winter stay. Would we come again may be in a few years, however by then legs may have not be up to it. Definite 3* hotel.

We have wanted to go to Portugal for some time and we finally got the opportunity. The Old Town in Alberfura was our destination and the hotel Sol e Mar our accommadation. The hotel was classed as a 4 star maybe this was the case when it was first given but it is a barely a 3 star at best. Firstly the location is second to none in the heart of the old town at the front and onto the beach at the back. The staff could not be faulted very helpful and friendly. Now you may think this sounds good. That is the good part. The hotel in itself is in need of a good make over. You can see all over where something needs fixing, painting or renewing. Our room while very spacious was clean but rather dilapidated. The beds very basic and I've seen better mattresses on prisoner in cell block H. The food was buffet style for dinner and breakfast. Although the breakfast was reasonable the evening meal was a let down. We are by far party eaters we usually find something to entertain are taste buds. But on this occasion we struggled. It was bland basic and un-appetising. We tried the first 2 night's but it came to ahead on the third we were looking forward to chicken curry we went down at 8 o'clock and there was only a little chicken and no sauce I asked for the curry to be replenished, the chef came out and pushed what was left to the top and indicated get on with it. I then complained to the waiter where he just shook his shoulders as if to say what can I do. We then left the restaurant and went to find some decent food. What a blessing in disguise we got to sample some excellent restaurants around and in the old town and if this didn't happen we never would. Now the facilities no sun terrace no sun lounges only a terraced cafe which is open for all. If you wanted a sun lounger the hotel had a site on the beach where you had to pay €15 per couple for two sun lounges and a sun shade. The Old town at night was great plenty of bars for all tastes young and old with entertainment every night. We thoroughly recommend Sir Harry's bar , Dominos and our favourite the Rock cafe Bar All in all we had a fab holiday but was let down by hotel in general so please Sol e Mar get your act together , we were not the only ones disappointed.
