Better than expected!

20 April 2015

Booked this for last week over Easter and read a few negative comments on TA but very pleasantly surprised. Hotel was a good size with spacious rooms, food was really good, maybe not quite 5 star but...

My experience from arrival to departure. We arrived at the airport and took a taxi to the hotel at approx. 20 euro. We didn't know that there was a local bus at the airport for 1.80 euro every 30 minutes which stopped right outside the hotel (you can pay on the bus, ask for kokkini hani when you get on). We remembered this for our departure back to the airport. Arriving in Kokkini Hani you notice quickly the town does not have very much and the hotel stands out. There is a derelict replica of the Rinela next door (possibly abandoned or maybe not opened for the season but the weeds and state of repair led me to think it had fallen on hard times). The Rinela hotel entrance and reception is big and the reception staff very welcoming. We checked in and were given a welcome leaflet in German (we speak English) and told it was just for the meal times and the receptionist circled this section. The leaflet had quite a lot of other information but we couldn't read it. Rooms are in a series of separate buildings which form the semi circle either side of the reception, dining and entertainment building. Our room was clean and modern with everything working. There is a mini bar in the room with juices, water and two beers. This is free and is replenished every two days. Our room had a balcony but didn't overlook the pool or beaches and overlooked a derelict building housing the local bird life. This didn't bother us. The meals were fine. Everything is clean, cooked thoroughly and there was plenty of choice. The food was the same every day and because there is plenty, you are able to alternate it and not become bored of the same things. I'm not a fussy eater but it you are then you might struggle if you only like a few things. The red and white wine is terrible and tastes like a cheap sherry. There is no wine list or choice, you are given the same everyday. I settled on the Rose and it grew on you as the days went on. The alcohol in general is poor. Don't expect to get your favourite tipple, there are no bottles of jack daniels, Bacardi or other popular choices... not even to purchase. There is a cocktails list and these drinks are served in small plastic cups and don't taste anything like what they claim to be. I purchased wine from a local shop. I can recommend wine from the local vinyard 'boutari'. It may sound by now that I have a big downer on this holiday and hotel and I guess I do. I think it could have been so much more enjoyable. This hotel has the makings of providing a great experience. Because the alcohol was terrible we didn't stay up and found ourselves retiring to our room by 9pm. Around 9.30pm the hotel entertainment starts and on our first night, speakers and a singer batted out some awful songs (half sung half shouted) until 12pm. Because the speakers were outside and our room was in the building next door, it was like it was on our balcony and there was no getting away from it. I longed for a decent drink and I might have joined in being as I wasn't going to be able to relax in my room. This pretty much continued through the week and I came home exhausted. You might be thinking what a party pooper and maybe you are right. Maybe it just wasn't for me. If you don't mind drinking really horrible wine, having La Bamba shouted over giant speakers, youre on a winner. Before I conclude this mini rant, the photos for the hotel look like there is an indoor pool. There is a spa and they only provide a massage. On our first day they said it was 70 euro for a massage and you got to use the indoor pool for one hour only. I asked if I could just use the pool and they said no, its just for people who had a massage and only for one hour. The gym is not a gym, it is a treadmill and bike and possibly one other piece of equipment and like the pool is only available to people paying for massage. As the week progresses, the staff of the spa will walk around the hotel drumming up trade and will drop the price of a massage to around 25euro. So to recap, the hotel is clean, the staff are good. The locals in Kokini Hani are really nice and welcoming. There isn't much to do but the people are great. The safari excursion is good and worth the money. Heraklion is ok. The bus route outside the hotel is very good. Hiring a car is a must and don't be put off by the guide book claiming the islanders drive badly, they don't, the roads are fine. The wifi is very hit and miss but the bar next to the rinela called 'palace' is really welcoming, you get a really nice drink, some local conversation, good music and the wifi is great.

Booked this for last week over Easter and read a few negative comments on TA but very pleasantly surprised. Hotel was a good size with spacious rooms, food was really good, maybe not quite 5 star but really good, buffet style with lots of choice. Everywhere very clean and gardens nice. Small spa, massages great but not sure gym equipment was up to much. Walked down the beach but it was quite tatty mainly due to it being out of season albeit I noticed the far end was being cleaned and ready for main season approaching. Pool was freezing as it's not heated but only to be expected as its only April, pretty sure it will be much warmer come summer. My only one criticism was the wine, red was pallet able but white was quite angry and there was no other choice so we walked around the corner to the shops and bought wine from here which you are allowed to take in to any of the restaurants. I think they're missing a trick here, I'd be more than happy to pay a little extra for a better wine or even a bottle of something bubbly but the hotel don't offer this. Beer was fine too. Plenty for the children to do, kids club, table tennis, tennis, pool etc. Also evening entertainment on if you wish or even a quiet room for playing cards. For the price I'd head back without hesitation.

This is not a 5 star hotel. However the wonderful staff and friendly service made up for it. They seem willing to change and take your comments and feedback on board. The evening entertainment very good kids live it. Thanks to Leon. The kids club also very good and the 2 ladies very helpful and kids really like them. The manager responsible for restaurant just great. After my feedback to him we got excellent service. And Nikos greeting us with a smile and wonderful service, very respectful family orientated and warm, my mother who went with us loved him. And my daughter. The food good lots of variety but needed abit more spice. The Chinese food wonderful and refreshing taste to my taste buds. I think different days with different cuisine would be nice, maybe Indian. Chinese, Arabic . French and Italian / that would work very well and give everyone something to look forward to each night. Even Greek and Cretan traditional style one night would be lovely. Our room basic but could do with tea and coffee making facilities with some biscuits. The rooms could be abit more modernised and larger. Paid for sea view with balcony but didn't get it. Wifi was very poor and intermittent. And had to keep asking for extra towels. Didnot feel out cleaning lady cleaned very well although oneday it was other days a moderate job, so not sure if the cleaning ladies changed everyday. My mother suffers asthma and put in a room high up with stairs, not well thought through the even though I told them and pre warned by email. No response from them. So after arguing got s second room but reception manager not that helpful. No buggy no lift in hotel or care for elderly or disabled needs. They need to improve on this since location and hotel lovely for the elderly. So just for the lovely and charming people mentioned above, I would go again!!! But would hope for 5 star to 7 star service nextime!!!

My family travelled to Crete to stay at the mitsis rinela beach resort, we were so impressed with the hotel, which completely exceeded our expectations. The grounds were immaculate and very pretty. The food was plentiful and tasty. There was good entertainment for the kids and the evening shows kept them fully amused and occupied. The hotel staff and the entertainment team are so welcoming and friendly. Our room was very clean and comfortable, the bathroom was perfect with shower and bath-and plenty of hot water on demand (had been an issue in a previous resort in Greece). We didn't want for a thing (except the weather as we managed to time our stay with a bad storm!). There was a maid service everyday and the minibar restocked every second day. When the sun did make an appearance we enjoyed the pools (we made use of 3 pools) and especially the beach. One of our children became ill on holiday and the hotel staff were so helpful and accommodating that we were completely blown away. We really can't recommend this hotel enough and would definitely consider returning. Kokkini Hani was only just gearing up for the tourist season when we arrived but there appear to be a good number of bars and taverna's to choose from at peak season. The aquarium is a short bus/taxi ride away entrance is cheap compared to UK aquarium prices and was an enjoyable experience for all the family-it's relatively small somonlyntakes a couple of hours to get round. It is a good location to explore the central and parts of eastern Crete with a comfortable and cheap coach service that runs from Heraklion around the coast.
